Isabella was born in Mediterranean waters, aboard a pirate ship. Her father was Benito Socarras Y Sanchez, otherwise known as Don Benito, and also known as Diabolito, and her mother was a Cuban woman named Maria Cortes, who sailed with them until she died of illness when Isabella was seven years of age. Isabella grew up learning all there was to know about seafaring and evading the US Naval forces. Diabolito was a particularly known pirate, well known for his violence as well as his skill at a Capitain. When Izabella was young she would often hide below deck when engaging in sea combat with other pirates or the Naval forces, but as she got older she would help steer the ship.
When she was fifteen years of age, Diabolito overtook another pirate ship, and gifted it to Isabella to sail. It was a smaller ship, but faster than her father's. This was when she earned the nickname "the Siren" as at night she would sing and her voice would reflect off the water to the other ship.
Isabella sailed along with him for a couple years before "the Mosquito Fleet", led by Commodore Porter, began patrolling the waters. Diabolito and other Cuban-based pirates were easily able to escape from American vessels, either escaping into the back country of the Florida Keys or retreating to Cuba where Porter's forces were unable to pursue. As the years passed, however, Cuban ship owners and other businessmen petitioned for authorities to cooperate with the United States. Spanish officials were unable to continue turning a blind eye to piracy, which often amounted to attacks on lone merchant vessels and fishing boats, and agreed to assist in hunting down Diabolito and other pirates.
Isabella and Diabolito encountered Porter and were cornered off the northern coast of Cuba. After a brief fight, the crew abandoned their ships and fled inland. Out of Diabolito's 70-man crew, 30 were either killed during the fighting or drowned while trying to swim to land. The rest were hunted down, caught, and hung. All except Isabella, whom Porter showed mercy to because she was just a girl. After being let go, and seeing her father and friends hung, Isabella took what little belongings she had and hitched a ride along with a family that was heading out west for the Gold Rush.
The perils of land were much different than the perils on the sea. Isabella faced illness and starvation, getting lost in the wilds, broken wagon wheels and broken limbs, and attacks by wild animals and natives alike. Isabella was relieved and glad when they finally reached a town called Prosperity. She didn't think she could travel through the wilds any longer. Besides, what was there in California for her? Prosperity was as good a place to settle down as any.
Looking for a job and a place to stay, Isabella went to The Last Drink Saloon, where she met the owner of the saloon, a woman named Lilith. She told Isabella she was always looking for more girls to help entertain the guests, and that the perks of the job would be that she got her own room. Isabella was not so fresh faced and naive that she didn't know what it meant to entertain the guests. Having little else to her name aside from her beauty, Isabella became a Saloon Girl.
Isabella, who went by Bella, loved her job. The saloon reminded her of the ship, with a bunch of guys singing and drinking and having a merry time. She'd serve drinks to the guys, chat with them and laugh with them, and then sleep with them. Sometimes she would be tasked with extracting certain information from clients for Lilith. What Lilith needed or did with that information, Isabella didn't know. All she knew was that she enjoyed doing it, and would bring Lilith any and every scrap piece of information she got from her clients.
The longer she stayed at The Last Drink the more she began to realize that there was more to Lilith and the Saloon than met the eye. Lilith was a vampire, as were several of her working girls. At first, it kind of weirded Isabella out, the thought of immortal people who drank blood. But she quickly got used to it, and it became just a natural part of her every day life.
Then Isabella got pregnant. Lilith was used to the human girls getting pregnant, and didn't discard them as most other Saloon owners would do. She took care of her girls all the way through their pregnancy and allowed them to keep their children. Isabella did not like being pregnant, as it put a hamper on her lifestyle and the larger she got the less work she had.
Finally she went into labor. At first they tried to just take care of the labor there, at the Saloon. But hours and hours and hours went by and the baby was breech and not coming out. Doc Robinson came to look at Isabella and help her through the pregnancy, but the prognosis wasn't good. Isabella was already extremely weak and fatigued from the labor and fading fast. The Doc cut Isabella open and took out a little baby girl, and then sewed her back up.
That night Isabella began succumbing to sepsis. Lilith informed Isabella that she would die, but that Lilith could save her by turning her into a vampire. All Isabella could think about was how she didn't want to die. And so, she accepted the curse of the vampire. Immediately she got better and healed up. She was finally able to hold her little girl, whom she named Maria.
