★ SEIYA KOU ★

"I'm a shooting star, breaking through the darkness! Sailor Star Fighter, stage on!"

.

Seiya Kou (星野 光) is a rising star -- a member of the Three Lights, a pop idol group. Playful, charming, and cocky, he's confident in going after what he wants, whether it's the star spot on the football team or the attentions of a reluctant classmate in odangos and pigtails. But "he" has a secret...

Seiya's true self is, in fact, something far different from the surface appearance -- because she's actually Sailor Star Fighter, one of the three Sailor Starlights, who come from a planet far outside of Earth's solar system. The Starlights are searching for their lost princess, who has fled their devastated world before the power of the corrupted Sailor Galaxia. Seiya, along with Taiki and Yaten, sends her song out into the world, hoping their princess will hear their desperate message. But Galaxia's power is even reaching Earth... and the Starlights find themselves facing a group of senshi who insist that they can stand up to her. What's more, Seiya finds herself developing feelings for a girl named Usagi, whose shining light reminds her of her princess...

Seiya is the first of the Sailor Starlights to be willing to fight Galaxia with the guardian Senshi of Earth, regaining her hope from their determination to stop the path of destruction, and joining them as they battle for love and justice!

★ WHAT'S IN A NAME ★

Seiya is written with the kanji 星野, which can also be read as "star field" ("hoshino"). The name Kou is written as 光 ("light").

The three Starlights are specified not to be siblings -- their shared name, "Kou", is each of their given name. "Seiya" is the character's surname.

The name of their idol group, Three Lights, is both a reference to their being the Sailor Starlights, and a pun based on all three of them having the same given name meaning "light".

Seiya was called Sarah Kot in the Danish dub and Shaqui (샤키) in the Korean dub.

★ BITS AND PIECES ★

Seiya joins the American football team at Juuban High School and quickly becomes a star athlete.

She likes the color red, rubies, hamburgers, and sports.

Seiya's roles in the Three Lights are guitar, lead vocals, and lyrics. She's also shown playing the drums at one point.

Seiya wears or carries a red rose when performing.

In the manga, Seiya is cool, stylish, and dedicated to her mission, but also egotistical, temperamental, and pessimistic. Naoko Takeuchi described her as being "like Mamoru and Haruka broken in half and added together".
In the anime, Seiya is more light-hearted, with a prankish sense of humor. She is overall more confident, cheerful, and easygoing than Taiki and Yaten, and is the only one interested in cooperating with Earth's guardian Senshi.

She is prone to showing off and to occasional fits of temper; Taiki and Yaten consider her a bit childish for this reason, although they still follow her as their leader.

Seiya develops strong feelings for Usagi, and pursues her romantically over the course of the season.

In both the anime and the manga, Seiya and Haruka regularly butt heads; they dislike each other, and try to outperform each other as athletes, as Senshi (even without knowing each other's identities), and over Usagi.

Seiya's birthday is July 30th, making her a Leo.

In Naoko Takeuchi's original designs, the Sailor Starlights did not originally have the long ponytails each of them are shown with, and instead all had short hairstyles; the ponytails were added to make it easier to create dolls for the characters.

★ PRETTY SOLDIER ★

The Starlights come from outside of Earth's solar system; they come from a planet called Kinmoku, and are themselves Senshi based on asteroids. They are not particularly interested in protecting Earth, believing it's not their responsibility to do so.

The Starlights have come to Earth in search of their own princess, Kakyuu, who fled planet Kinmoku when Sailor Galaxia attacked it. They adopt pop idol personas to do so (choosing to disguise themselves as young men in the belief that they will become more popular) and they place a telepathic message into their songs that they hope will reach Princess Kakyuu. People with psychic sensitivity sometimes receive faint glimmers of the message while listening to the music.

The Starlights are main characters in the final season of the anime, on a level with Sailor Moon and the Inner Senshi. In the manga, however, they are more minor characters, and are not part of the climactic final battle as they are in the anime.

In the manga, the Starlights are women; their identity as male pop idols is simply cross-dressing as a disguise. In the anime, however, they have male bodies that are shown to turn female when they transform. This is never explained, so it's not clear whether the Starlights' male bodies are merely part of the disguise they have assumed on Earth, or if they always have male bodies when not transformed.
Although many countries kept the gender change intact, Stars was not included in the English, French, or Vietnamese dubs, which ended with SuperS; and in the Italian dub, the Sailor Starlights were the twin sisters of the Three Lights, with the transformation sequences treated as the Three Lights summoning their sisters to do battle.

★ MUSIC ★

"Nagareboshi he" ("To the Shooting Stars"), from the Three Lights' character single. "Nagareboshi he" is performed by the Three Lights several times in-series.
(Translated lyrics here)

"Todokanu Omoi -my friend's love-" ("Unreachable Feelings -my friend's love-"), from the Three Lights' character single.
(Translated lyrics here)

"Ginga Ichi Mibun Chigai na Kataomoi" ("A Galaxy Apart: One-Sided Love"), Seiya's character single. It was accompanied by a spoken prologue and poem.

★ PLAYED BY ★

Seiya was voiced by Niyama Shiho in the original anime (in both male and female form).

Seiya was portrayed by Katayama Sayuri and Akiyama Chinatsu in the Sera Myu musicals.

She was portrayed by Harukawa Meiku in the revival musical Sailor Moon: Le Mouvement Final.

SAILOR STARS SEASON/STARS ARC

Sailor Change Star: The transformation item each of the Starlights have. It consists of a white/gold earpiece with a microphone, into which Seiya says " Fighter Star Power, Makeup!" to transform. In the manga, they also wear their brooches (shaped like winged stars) as pendants under their clothes, and hold them up as part of the transformation.
There is an alternate version of Fighter's transformation that appears later in the season.

Star Serious Laser: Fighter's attack, which surrounds her with a ring of stars made of white light; they then converge into a globe of light at her fingertip, allowing her to shoot the light forward in a single powerful beam.
An alternate version is used later in the season, in which Fighter uses her Sailor Star Yell to create and direct the beam.

Sailor Star Yell: An item that appears only in the anime, the Sailor Star Yells are white, star-shaped items with gems in the surface and wings attached to each side. The Sailor Starlights use them to perform their attacks later in the season, although earlier in the season they attack without them.

Star Fighter Kick, Star Fighter Punch, Star Fighter Upper, and Star Fighter Attack: These techniques/attacks are listed for Sailor Star Fighter in the Materials Collection artbook, but they're never elaborated on or depicted in the manga.

"All life in this galaxy has a shining star within itself."
