Kino Makoto (木野 まこと) is the fourth Sailor Senshi to awaken - the soldier of courage and lightning. Like Ami, Makoto arrives at Juuban Chuugakkou with a reputation already in place -- she is rumored to be a violent delinquent who got kicked out of other schools for fighting. The other students are all too frightened to approach her... except for Usagi, who can't reconcile the rumors with the beautiful and powerful girl who just that morning had protected her from bullies...

Despite her reputation, her unusual height, and her physical strength, Makoto is not the violent, scary fighter the rumors at first make her out to be. While she enjoys sparring and martial arts, Makoto's tastes tend toward the traditionally feminine. She loves cooking, dancing, and flowers; she harbors memories of a boy who broke her heart, and often fears that her height and strength will make her seem unlovable. But anyone who lets that put them off is missing out on Makoto's loyalty, kindness, and courage -- no one will fight harder to keep their loved ones safe and happy than Makoto will.

Sailor Jupiter is the strongest of all the Senshi in physical terms, and is the raw power and muscle of their group -- Jupiter will even attack enemies with her fists as well as her magic. While she can be headstrong and stubborn, attacking first and asking questions later, Jupiter's strength and bravery make her indispensable as one of the soldiers of love and justice who protects the earth!

♃ WHAT'S IN A NAME ♃

♃ Makoto's name sounds like the phrase 木の実, ki no makoto, which translates roughly to "sincerity/faithfulness of the trees".

♃ The other girls call Makoto 'Mako-chan'.

♃ In Takeuchi Naoko's early character drafts, she was originally named Chino Mamoru, which sounds like the phrase "chi no mamoru", "protector of Earth". (This name was later reworked as Chiba Mamoru, the alter ego of Tuxedo Mask.)

♃ Makoto's various dub names include Lita (English and Spanish); Marcy Maurane (French); Morea (Italian); Maria (Portuguese); Patricia (Castilian); 木野真琴, Mukye Jankam (Cantonese); and 리타, Rita (Korean).

♃ In Saban's scrapped live-action/animated remake, Makoto's counterpart was named Sara; she was a Black girl with short, straightened hair.

♃ BITS AND PIECES ♃

♃ Makoto's birthday is December 5^th, making her a Sagittarius. In astrology, Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter.

♃ Her favorite colors are green and light pink.

♃ Her best subject is home ec and her worst is biology. Like Usagi, she is a mediocre student at best.

♃ Makoto is an extremely talented cook and especially loves baking. She also loves gardening and flowers. Her dream is to one day be married and to own a bakery and/or flower shop.

♃ Her other hobbies include shopping, reading romance novels, and practicing martial arts.

♃ Her favorite foods are meatloaf and cherry pie.

♃ She is a talented figure skater -- somewhat to her own surprise, as it apparently a skill that Sailor Jupiter had in Silver Millennium, rather than something Makoto herself ever learned how to do.

♃ She hates cheaters and liars, and will go out of her way to confront bullies.

♃ Makoto is obsessed with a senpai (upperclassman) who broke her heart by rejecting her. She refers to him often and compares all guys she develops a crush on to him in some way. He seems to be at least partly responsible for Makoto's inferiority complex about her appearance.
Her obsession with her senpai starts to fade as the series progresses, and she's eventually able to become more hopeful about finding someone who will love her the way she is.

♃ Makoto lives alone. In the manga, it's specified that her parents died in an airplane crash when she was young. She still harbors a fear of airplanes and hates to hear them going by overhead. It is not known how she supports herself or if she has any other relatives. (In the anime, while she lives alone, no other information about her family is given.)

♃ Makoto (at least before meeting the other girls) often got into fights. Her long-skirted uniform and light, curly hair are intended to be reminiscent of pop culture depictions of sukeban (girl delinquents); in her earliest designs she was also a smoker.
In-universe, Makoto's different uniform is explained by saying that Juuban Chuugakkou didn't have any uniforms in her size, and that her hair color/texture is natural (neither bleached/dyed nor permed).

♃ PRETTY SOLDIER ♃

♃ As Sailor Jupiter, her attacks focus on both thunder and lightning, and leaves/flowers/plants. The Greco-Roman deity Zeus/Jupiter is associated with lightning, while in Japan the planet Jupiter is traditionally associated with the element of wood. Jupiter is also the largest planet in the solar system, hence Makoto's height.

♃ Her dominant color is green, and her uniform colors are green and light pink.

♃ In the manga, Sailor Jupiter is shown wearing a belt of pink gems, with a pomander filled with pink roses on it.

♃ Sailor Jupiter eventually powers up to become Super Sailor Jupiter; in the manga, she later achieves Eternal form as well.

♃ In the manga, each of the planetary Senshi is the princess of her own planet and has her own castle, given to her by Queen Serenity. These castles are named after the respective planets' moons. Jupiter's castle is named Castle Io.

♃ PRETTY GUARDIAN SAILOR MOON ♃

♃ PGSM is unique in that it significantly changes the physical appearance of the girls during transformation. Makoto's hair turns from dark brown and straight to auburn/light brown and curly, and her low ponytail becomes a high one with two long strands in front of her ears.

♃ In PGSM, Makoto is much more comfortable with looking sporty and tomboyish, but she still has "feminine" interests like cooking and flowers, and is still insecure about how men perceive her.

♃ In the epilogue to PGSM, Makoto is in a relationship with Furuhata Motoki, and they become engaged after Motoki catches the bouquet at Usagi and Mamoru's wedding.

CLASSIC SEASON/DARK KINGDOM ARC

Transformation Pen: Given to Makoto by Luna, it allows her to transform into Sailor Jupiter with the phrase "♃ Jupiter Power, Makeup!"

Communicator: Disguised as a calculator, this allows Makoto to communicate at any time with the other Senshi. They are given to the Senshi by Luna. In the manga, they are wristwatches that appeared as prizes from the Sailor V game, and which Luna modified to serve as communicators.

Rose earrings: Makoto wears rose-shaped earrings; unlike most of the other accessories that the girls wear (except Minako's red ribbon), Makoto keeps her earrings when transformed into Sailor Jupiter.

Tiara: All Senshi have tiaras, but Jupiter's is unique in that it has a small antenna that acts as a lightning rod for her Supreme Thunder attack. In the first arc of the manga, the antenna is always present; in the anime, it appears only for Jupiter's attack.

♃ Supreme Thunder: An attack in which Jupiter uses the antenna on her tiara as a rod to attract lightning, which she then directs at her target. She also occasionally prefaces her attack by calling on Jupiter to create a storm. The manga equivalent is called Jupiter Thunderbolt.

Flower Hurricane: A manga-only attack in which Jupiter summons a cloud of flowers and petals, which act as a smokescreen.

R SEASON/BLACK MOON ARC

Star Power Stick: This allows Makoto to transform into a more powerful version of Sailor Jupiter with the phrase "♃ Jupiter Star Power, Makeup!" It is given to her by Luna and Artemis. In the manga, she receives it from Luna after her original pen is destroyed in the final battle against Metallia.

♃ Supreme Thunder Dragon: A special version of Supreme Thunder. Jupiter creates a huge burst of lightning, which takes the shape of a dragon and "devours" its target.

♃ Sparkling Wide Pressure: An attack in which Jupiter claps her hands together to create ball lightening, then throws it at her target.

Wrist Communicator: Performs the same function as the earlier communicator, but in the shape of a wristwatch. The original communicator watches are also replaced with these in the manga. They are given to the Senshi by Luna and Artemis.

Sailor Planet Power: A combined attack in which each of the Senshi channel their power, combine it, and direct it in a huge beam of energy. It is sometimes called ♃ Sailor Planet Attack.
In the manga, it first appeared in the Dark Kingdom arc, performed by Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus (without Sailor Moon) to attack Metallia.

S SEASON/INFINITY ARC

Jupiter Planet Power: In the manga, Neo Queen Serenity grants the Inner Senshi more powerful transformations after they defeat Death Phantom. Makoto uses the phrase "Jupiter Planet Power, Makeup!" in the Infinity arc to transform into a stronger version of Sailor Jupiter; she no longer needs an item to transform at this stage. This version of the transformation never appears in the anime.

Jupiter Coconut Cyclone: A manga-only attack in which Jupiter sends a large spherical blast of electricity at her target.

SUPERS SEASON/DREAM ARC

Jupiter Crystal Change Rod: An upgrade to the Star Power Stick, created by Pegasus with the power of the Golden Crystal. It allows Makoto to transform into Super Sailor Jupiter with the phrase "♃ Jupiter Crystal Power, Makeup!" The Crystal Change Rods appear only in the anime.

Jupiter Crystal: Makoto's sailor crystal, a heart-shaped stone revealed to her by Guardian Jupiter. She uses it to transform into Super Sailor Jupiter with the phrase "Jupiter Crystal Power, Makeup!" The Jupiter Crystal appears only in the manga.

Guardian Jupiter: A Sailor Power Guardian, Guardian Jupiter appears as a small sprite who looks like a tiny version of Sailor Jupiter, and refers to herself as Makoto's "other self". She resides in Castle Io. Guardian Jupiter appears only in the manga.

♃ Jupiter Oak Evolution: An attack in which Jupiter sends a barrage of green, leaf-shaped energy bolts at her enemies.

SAILOR STARS SEASON/STARS ARC

Star Seed: Star seeds are crystals that are the embodiment of each person's life. In the anime, Makoto's star seed is a green crystal with a glowing core; in the manga, it is the Jupiter Crystal.
It is a true star seed (anime) or sailor crystal (manga), the star seed of a planet(/star/asteroid/etc). Being born with a true star seed/sailor crystal enables a person to transform into the Senshi or guardian of that planet.

PRETTY GUARDIAN SAILOR MOON

Jewelry Star Bracelet: A silver charm bracelet that allows Makoto to transform into Sailor Jupiter with the phrase "♃ Jupiter Power, Makeup!" When transformed, the bracelet changes form into a thick jeweled cuff.

Teletia S: A magical cell phone that each of the Senshi has. In addition to being used for communication, it fulfills the same role as the Disguise Pen, allowing the user to wear any outfit by using the phone's camera function to take a picture of it. (♃ Makoto uses the Teletia S to change her appearance)

♃ Supreme Thunder: An attack in which Jupiter sends green lightning to surround and destroy her enemies. Unlike the manga and anime, she does not use her tiara as a lightning rod, but rather her hands.

♃ Flower Hurricane: An attack in which Jupiter creates a cloud of rose petals and directs it at her target. Unlike the manga move of the same name, it is an offensive attack, rather than a defensive screen.

Star Tambourine: A star-shaped tambourine that Jupiter uses to attack enemies on its own or as part of ♃ Moonlight Attractive Attack. She can also transform it into the Jupiter Spear.

♃ Jupiter Thunderbolt: An attack in which Jupiter uses her Star Tambourine to create a powerful bolt of lightning and direct it at her target.

Jupiter Spear: Jupiter can transform her Star Tambourine into a spear with a green haft and a jagged, lightning bolt-shaped blade.
