Yaten Kou (夜天 光) is a bit of a diva -- haughty and irritable behind his delicate good looks. He seems to want nothing more than to be left alone, and to despise being made the center of attention. So Yaten seems an unlikely candidate to be one of the Three Lights, rising stars of the pop idol world and always in the spotlight. But Yaten has a secret...

"He" is actually Sailor Star Healer, one of the Sailor Starlights -- guardian Senshi from a world far outside of Earth's solar system. With her companions, she has fled her own world's destruction, following her lost princess to Earth, and taking on the guise of an idol singer to send their song out, trying to reach their princess. But their task seems hopeless, and Yaten grows ever more snappish and withdrawn, pushing people away. It's not until they cross paths with Earth's guardian Senshi that she begins to open up again...

Yaten's rudeness and bad temper hide her devotion to her princess, and her fear and sorrow at losing her; but as she begins to find joy outside of her mission again, she displays hidden hints of kindness and loyalty, even in her dread of Galaxia's advance. In the end, Yaten chooses hope over despair, and fights alongside Earth's guardian Senshi for love and justice!

★ WHAT'S IN A NAME ★

★ Yaten is written with the kanji 夜天, which can also be read as "night sky" ("yozora"). The name Kou is written as 光 ("light").

★ The three Starlights are specified not to be siblings -- their shared name, "Kou", is each of their given name. "Yaten" is the character's surname.

★ The name of their idol group, Three Lights, is both a reference to their being the Sailor Starlights, and a pun based on all three of them having the same given name meaning "light".

★ Yaten was called Yale Kot in the Danish dub and Eva (에바) in the Korean dub.

★ BITS AND PIECES ★

★ Unlike Seiya and Taiki, Yaten doesn't join any clubs while attending Juuban High School, and dislikes receiving attention from the other students.

★ She likes the color green, amethysts, caviar, cats, and art (specifically painting and photography).

★ Yaten is blunt to the point of rudeness; Seiya and Taiki even chastise her for acting so cold that she may drive off fans. She is very distrustful of humans overall, and wants to both stay away from Earth's guardian Senshi and leave Earth as soon as possible.

★ Yaten seems to like animals more than people, and unknowingly "adopts" Luna in one episode.

★ When interacting with the other Senshi, Yaten is most often shown with Minako in the anime. In the manga, she is paralleled with Michiru, as Seiya is paralleled with Haruka and Taiki with Setsuna.

★ Naoko Takeuchi described Yaten as being "like a fashion model" -- delicate, egotistical, and prone to holding grudges, and "never carrying anything heavier than chopsticks". In the musicals, however, Yaten was more light-hearted, with a personality closer to Minako's.

★ Yaten's roles in the Three Lights are bass, background vocals, and song arrangement.

★ Yaten wears or carries a yellow rose when performing.

★ Unlike Seiya and Taiki, who are addressed as "-san", Yaten is addressed with the suffix "-kun".

★ Yaten's birthday is February 8^th, making her an Aquarius.

★ In Naoko Takeuchi's original designs, the Sailor Starlights did not originally have the long ponytails each of them are shown with, and instead all had short hairstyles; the ponytails were added to make it easier to create dolls for the characters.

★ PRETTY SOLDIER ★

★ The Starlights come from outside of Earth's solar system; they come from a planet called Kinmoku, and are themselves Senshi based on asteroids. They are not particularly interested in protecting Earth, believing it's not their responsibility to do so.

★ The Starlights have come to Earth in search of their own princess, Kakyuu, who fled planet Kinmoku when Sailor Galaxia attacked it. They adopt pop idol personas to do so (choosing to disguise themselves as young men in the belief that they will become more popular) and place a telepathic message into their songs that they hope will reach Princess Kakyuu. People with psychic sensitivity sometimes receive faint glimmers of the message while listening to the music.

★ The Starlights are main characters in the final season of the anime, on a level with Sailor Moon and the Inner Senshi. In the manga, however, they are more minor characters, and are not part of the climactic final battle as they are in the anime.

★ In the manga, the Starlights are women; their identity as male pop idols is simply cross-dressing as a disguise. In the anime, however, they have male bodies that are shown to turn female when they transform. This is never explained, so it's not clear whether the Starlights' male bodies are merely part of the disguise they have assumed on Earth, or if they always have male bodies when not transformed.
Although many countries kept the gender change intact, Stars was not included in the English, French, or Vietnamese dubs, which ended with SuperS; and in the Italian dub, the Sailor Starlights were the twin sisters of the Three Lights, with the transformation sequences treated as the Three Lights summoning their sisters to do battle.

SAILOR STARS SEASON/STARS ARC

Sailor Change Star: The transformation item each of the Starlights have. It consists of a white/gold earpiece with a microphone, into which Yaten says "★ Healer Star Power, Makeup!" to transform. In the manga, they also wear their brooches (shaped like winged stars) as pendants under their clothes, and hold them up as part of the transformation.
There is an ★ alternate version of Healer's transformation that appears later in the season.

★ Star Sensitive Inferno: Healer's attack, in which she creates a star of white light in her right hand and then uses it to shoot bolts of energy at her target.
An ★ alternate version is use later in the season, in which Healer uses her Sailor Star Yell to create and direct the energy bolts.

Sailor Star Yell: An item that appears only in the anime, the Sailor Star Yells are white, star-shaped items with gems in the surface and wings attached to each side. The Sailor Starlights use them to perform their attacks later in the season, although earlier in the season they attack without them.

Star Healer Beam, Star Healer Tornado, and Star Healer Worm: These are listed as attacks/techniques for Sailor Star Healer in Naoko Takeuchi's Materials Collection artbook, although they are not elaborated on or used in the manga.
