It’s hard to find a best friend that you really connect with. Especially a best friend willing to bake you and your picky roommate (looking at you, Manwar) cookies whenever! Liz, Manwar, and I have donated a few things to the Forum Shop that really define our friendships.

I don't. But if they are, I wouldn't mind it, though I think they could have phrased it better.
I don't expect anyone to change how they do things by what I say, but if someone wants to understand how I view something, they need to know my motivations.
What I have said is justification to my earlier statements. I am not calling out anyone for making a small statement, I am using it as an example.
If we cannot converse with other people to better understand two sides of a situation, how do you expect growth on an issue? My conversation with Clopin was quite pleasant even though we may not agree 100%, it doesn't mean I expect them to behave differently or change their viewpoint. I do think we both probably took something away from the conversation though, and that is probably a good thing.

they are such small comments i still don't see why they bother you so much. telling people not to focus on it is just going to make them focus on it more. you can't dictate what people will want to discuss especially based on your very personal feelings on extremely subjective matters like whether or not sexuality should be focused on. talk about what you like and move on.

So glad the sticker is only one point because it is so adorable and I’m still saving up points to buy all the other stickers in that shop. I wish forum points were given more frequently. It’s been at least 30 posts since I last got one. I suppose it could just be me having a string of bad luck, but these odds still feel way too low. :(

I agree that not every NPC's gender or sexuality needs to be stated-- it all comes with discretion. I do think it's important to have representations of everyone, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary to know those particular details about everyone. Because there are some people who never talk or share about those things so it wouldn't be important! It's obviously important to Nico and Liz because that's how they bonded and is something they obviously talk about, but for some other characters it wouldn't matter to them whether or not people knew. I'm glad to listen because listening to other people's viewpoints is important. I certainly don't know everything, so the only way I can grow and understand is to listen. c: You brought up valid points about needing more information on everyone in general though and I can get behind that. We don't have to agree on everything to have a conversation about it!
With all this being said though I forgot to mention how cute the actual items are. I need that plushie pls. And the background.

yaaaaas more NPC backstories! I love that Manwar and Nico are Roommates xD, and that we've learned more about Liz, Nico and Manwar.

it will be better if they do get more fleshed out backstories I think, same goes for all NPCs. They do need more backstory and personality because we don't have much to go on for a lot of them. I feel it's unnecessary to state each npc's gender and sexuality in those though. for some, I am fine with. it shouldn't be a requirement for an npc though. I am glad you're being understanding with me instead of immediately judging me as intolerant.

people are just excited because they're seeing themselves reflected in characters on a website they enjoy. they're not reducing these characters to labels or ignoring their personalities because of it. they're just making a quick comment about what excited them most about it. i don't see why that's a big deal.

That's true, and some people do get on a single track when something like this is announced. And I agree that a character's sexuality or gender shouldn't be the only reason you like them. I think people are just excited about this because these two are the first examples Subeta has of asexual characters. But I also agree that yes, we should be seeing more of the characters' backstories and should be looking more at all the hints. Like I would've never thought that Manwar and Liz would be friends till this was introduced. But there's also only so much you can do with items. With these items they felt it was important to flesh out their friendships and what they bonded over. It seems that this is the one thing that many people have taken away from the items when in fact there are more details that should have been taken away.

I read the news wrong, and thought these were referral shop additions. I'm happy they are forum shop items instead. Yay!
And also yeah, it's totally fine to not want to be labeled and people should respect that. But please don't shame people who embrace their labels. Labels are a way for people to find others like them and to promote a sense of community. They should always be optional. But the people who worked on these characters decided that Nico and Liz would label themselves so yes, they're asexual and that's a label they as characters obviously embrace.

If you've lived all your life without a word for what and who you are in your heart, and what and who you are doesn't fit into societal norms, you wind up feeling like there must be something wrong with you. Like you're broken or 'nothing'. But then one day you find out 'there's a word for that, you're not broken at all you're just label and there's other people just like you'. And it's amazing. At least, that's how it was for me. Just wanted to say that I guess ... *now excuse me while I vanish back into the mist that hides shy people from things like online forums DX *

I had a longer comment written but. -shrugs- If you all don't want things to be so explicitly stated, maybe try listening when hints are dropped. Because people are still misgendering Quentin, I saw people treating Esther as if she was straight even right after she was given a girlfriend, and in general people ignore any new representation that crops up unless it's spelled out.
Also, we got a lot more information other than their sexualities so idk what everyone is complaining about. We learned that Nico and Liz are really good friends, that they play video games and board games together, that they cuddle, that Liz's Squidley loves hugs and loves hugging people, that Liz's horns tear holes in pillows and probably other things (imagine how hard it is to get dressed with horns), that Liz, Nico, or Manwar could be vegan, that Manwar hangs out with them sometimes and that Liz might even hang out with Manwar without Nico. I don't understand why that's not enough development just because they're asexual, considering we used to know next to nothing about them and now we can imagine how a day might go in their life. Also, cough cough, can I point out that we still know nothing about the owner of Apocalyptic Apothecary? Defend and Conquer? Spells Galore? Weapons Warehouse? The girl who's run the Accessory Bin for years but is so unfleshed out that I don't even know if she has a name? There are so many characters that need to be fleshed out that I don't understand why stating a character's sexuality isn't worth of being considered information about them or is too 'in your face'.

Agreeing with @Tserel here. Besides that one line, the entire post is about their friendships and interactions, not their sexuality. That's just the ONLY thing y'all is focusing on. Meaning YOU'RE turning this all into "they're asexual characters who happen to be gamers", not Subeta. I've noticed a few of the comments stating they had HEARD Nico was asexual or these characters were asexual, but weren't sure. This isn't shoving their sexuality in your faces, it's CONFIRMING what some people were confused about. So get your panties out of a twist over this, really. It's childish. Let people be happy there are characters on a site they love and frequent that represent them and they can feel a kinship with and stop trying to rain on their parade. And stop trying to turn a post that gives a bit more back story on NPCs and their regular interactions with others into JUST their sexuality.
Just be happy there are new, adorable items with a little information on characters. And if you can't be, don't spoil the fun for everyone else.

@kbbob Probably, that's partially why I keep quiet. But just like the sexuality spectrum, there is more than loving and hating something.
@kbbob Right, it makes people happy, almost always a good thing, but not everything needs a label. Of course, I also wish that you weren't labeled (there we go again) some kind of -ist or -phobe if you say something that isn't extremely positive.

I think the problem is that everyone is narrowing down too much because it's mentioned? It's literally one line "they met and bonded over this" and everything else, EVERYTHING ELSE, is dedicated to describing their friendships and interactions. Like, this talks a lot more about how they like to hang out, cuddle, play games and eat cookies and oh yeah these 2 people happened to meet bc they were ace. In no way is it narrowing them down to their sexuality or focusing only on it.

To anyone complaining about how tumblr this is, please stop. It's a fact of life. People have SHOCK different genders, sexualities, romantic alignments, etc. That's because they're different people. Almost like people are all different. Wow.

I love how characters that didn't have much to them are being built up with these really good details of diversity, and gives them personality quirks and helps people visualize their interactions and relationships. wow, subeta, how dare you represent minorities. if they're not society's "default," you are literally rubbing it in our faces, and it's totes all about politics and not real people's legit identities. i want more npc's just like me, but not like anyone else, kthx.

I usually keep quiet about these things, I was raised by an old fashioned southern grandma and greatgrandma and one of the things they taught me was "you don't talk about certain things in public." Which includes the internet. So I try to stay away from the religious, political, and now sexual issues.

I was watching Chopped a few nights ago and one of the contestants on there said something that boiled down to "I'm a gay man in a chef's jacket." Which to me says he sees himself more as gay than a chef. "I'm a gay man who happens to be a chef." as opposed to "I'm a chef who just happens to also like men."
Yeah, it makes sense, and if that's how you see yourself fine, but I wish, especially online, it wasn't like that. I like how Kung Jin was handled in Mortal Kombat. They aren't blasting him around (again, not specifically calling out Subeta here) as their first gay kombatant. Apart from a throwaway line (and I say throwaway because until a producer said "Yes, he's gay." there was a lot of "Is he/isn't he?") and a couple of interactions (like Tanya hitting on him and him telling her she's barking up the wrong tree) you don't really know it. They made him a skilled fighter, Shaolin warrior, Special Forces member who happens to be gay. Not a gay man who happens to do those things. You look at his design, and there's nothing stereotypical about him. You wouldn't think it (unless you're a shipper) unless you played story mode or fought him against Tanya.
So what it boils down to me trying to say is this: I do appreciate Subeta being diverse, because let's face it, the world is diverse. I do understand people wanting to be represented on the sexual spectrum, not even going into the terms here because there are so many and I don't even know what half of them mean and I don't want to use the wrong one, I just wish it wasn't all about their character. I wish they didn't have to be labeled in the items they make. Yeah, everyone can't get plot attention, but I do wish there were more NPC interactions (like "Hey, hang out with Nico this weekend on the gaming forum!) which flesh them out more than these items can. It's great seeing the NPCs talk to us, it gives me the feeling of Gaia in the way back when. If staff can't do it, I'm sure dedicated members would be willing to play as the NPCs, given a bio and a short list of dos and don'ts, like not suddenly making Ian crush on Natasha or something.

They aren't blasting him around (again, not specifically calling out Subeta here) as their first gay kombatant. Apart from a throwaway line (and I say throwaway because until a producer said "Yes, he's gay." there was a lot of "Is he/isn't he?") and a couple of interactions (like Tanya hitting on him and him telling her she's barking up the wrong tree) you don't really know it. They made him a skilled fighter, Shaolin warrior, Special Forces member who happens to be gay. Not a gay man who happens to do those things. You look at his design, and there's nothing stereotypical about him. You wouldn't think it (unless you're a shipper) unless you played story mode or fought him against Tanya.
So what it boils down to me trying to say is this: I do appreciate Subeta being diverse, because let's face it, the world is diverse. I do understand people wanting to be represented on the sexual spectrum, not even going into the terms here because there are so many and I don't even know what half of them mean and I don't want to use the wrong one, I just wish it wasn't all about their character. I wish they didn't have to be labeled in the items they make. Yeah, everyone can't get plot attention, but I do wish there were more NPC interactions (like "Hey, hang out with Nico this weekend on the gaming forum!) which flesh them out more than these items can. It's great seeing the NPCs talk to us, it gives me the feeling of Gaia in the way back when. If staff can't do it, I'm sure dedicated members would be willing to play as the NPCs, given a bio and a short list of dos and don'ts, like not suddenly making Ian crush on Natasha or something.

Some people have to announce their sexuality or people will try to erase it. Many times, if I compliment a woman or try to flirt with her, people will dismiss it and deliberate twist queer comments into straight ones. It basically goes down like this: "Oh man, her booty is just fantastic. What? No, not in a friendly kinda way. It's my kind of butt. Listen buddy, I said I like her booty, I didn't mean that in a straight way. I'm bi. No dude, I'm bi. I'M BISEXUAL. I WANT TO SNUGGLE HER. Snuggle is not a synonym for shopping. OMG."
