Release notes

Changelog

These are pulled ✨ automatically ✨ from the code, with some slight tweaks. Updated regularly, with a lot of updates for a 20+ year old site!

January 2026

Explore Page Shops Now Restock! Kumos Bug Fix

Fixed a bug where shops found on Explore pages (like Carnival Stand, Half Baked, Rathskeller Inn, Beach Shack, Icy Goods, and others) weren't being restocked by the shop system. They'll now be included in regular restocking cycles alongside the main "shopping district" shops.

Discount Savings Now Track Properly! Kumos Bug Fix

When using your discount card effect in Kumos shops, your lifetime savings are now tracked in both the new Effects system AND the legacy counter (shown in your Discount Card stats). This ensures the "Total sP Saved" stat stays accurate no matter which shop system you use.

Discount Card Effects Now Work Everywhere! Kumos Bug Fix

Your discount card effects from the Effects page now work in both the new Kumos shops AND the legacy main shops. Previously, only the old inventory-based discount cards worked in legacy shops - now the Effects system is properly connected. If you have a discount card sitting in your inventory, you'll see an alert in the shops encouraging you to activate it as an Effect for a better experience.

Lag + Errors Kumos Improvement

We've been having a day full of errors on Kumos + legacy. I've just turned off the process that ran away hours ago, and am working to get the database load to equal out.

You should start seeing less errors and lag, and hopefully it'll level out over the next 30 minutes or so!

User Shop Search Now Shows Your Own Listings! Kumos New Feature

When searching for items in user shops, you'll now see a highlighted section at the top showing any copies you have in YOUR shops. This includes a handy "Remove" button to pull items back to your inventory without having to navigate to your shop. Perfect for questing when you realize you already have the item stocked!

Major Page Load Speed Improvements! Kumos Technical

The News page and other pages with lots and lots of items should now load significantly faster. Pages that were making 100+ database queries now make closer to 20. This is the kind of under-the-hood work that makes everything feel snappier, let me know in the comments if you're seeing any improvements to the Kumos speeds

Custom Wearables Can Now Be Auctioned! Kumos Bug Fix

Fixed a bug where trying to auction Custom Wearables (rarity 200 items) for Cash Shop Credits would fail with a "Only items worth 100,000+ points can be auctioned" error. Since custom wearables are unique items without great market price information, this check now correctly skips for CSC auctions.

Mobile + Accessibility Kumos Improvement

Fixed some important mobile issues based on feedback:

  • Pinch-to-zoom now works! You can now use two-finger pinch gestures to zoom in and out on the site

  • Sidebar now scrolls! If you have lots of widgets in your sidebar, you can now scroll through them instead of them being cut off at the bottom

  • Better touch targets: Buttons and links are now at least 44px in size for easier tapping.

  • Higher visibility sidebar button: The sidebar toggle button is now larger, higher in the layer stack, and respects iPhone safe areas (so it can't hide behind the top bar)

Forum Signatures Now Scroll! Kumos Improvement

Long forum signatures are now contained in a scrollable area (max 200px tall) instead of taking over the whole post. If someone has a signature that's taller than that, you can scroll within it to see the rest. Excessively tall signatures (over 600px) won't render at all!

This is a solution to the (imo very silly!) rule of warning people who have signatures a little too large. It removes. a common sense of frustration that folks feel with the forums and just getting started, and gives way more space overall.

I'll be adding a space to "edit signature" in the Kumos forums soon!

Mobile Sidebar & Navigation! Kumos Bug Fix

Fixed several issues with the mobile kumos layout. The sidebar (with your widgets and events) now has a toggle button in the bottom-left corner to open it, and an X button to close it.

The navigation menu button is now properly positioned in the top-right corner of the screen. The sidebar also no longer hides behind the header - it starts below the navigation so you can see and use everything! I'm looking for feedback specifically on the color of the sidebar, I assume this isn't great across themes right now.

Forum Activity Feed Cleaned Up! Kumos Improvement

The "All Activity" section on the forums page is now smaller and easier to scan. I've also filtered out Forum Games threads from the activity feed since the rapid-fire posts there were drowning out discussion from other forums. You can still visit Forum Games directly to see all the fun - it just won't fill up the main activity stream anymore!

I'm also considering how to turn those games into something a little more interactive, but I've had that thought before..

Kumos Updates Now Visible on Legacy News Page! Kumos New Feature

The legacy news page now shows the latest Kumos changelog entries in a special light blue section at the top! This makes it easier to see what's being actively worked on without having to visit the new site. Each entry shows the update type (features, bug fixes, improvements), a description, and links to try new features.

We're rebuilding Subeta piece by piece on Kumos, and your feedback is more valuable than ever!

Present Opening from Previous Years Fixed! Kumos Bug Fix

Fixed a bug where users couldn't open Christmas presents from previous years (like 2025) and were getting "Presents cannot be opened yet!" error. Now you can always open presents from any previous year - only the current year's presents are locked until December 25th during the holiday season!

December 2025

Duplicate Quest Prevention System! Kumos Bug Fix

Fixed a rare but serious bug where users could end up on multiple quests simultaneously. This was causing quest tracking inconsistencies where users would have one quest showing normally and another "ghost" quest that couldn't be completed or cancelled properly:

  • Users should now only ever have one active quest at a time, ensuring quest tracking works reliably!

Melody will buy gifts again! Kumos Bug Fix

Melody ran out of sP to purchase gifts late on the 27th, and her bank hadn't been restored until now. She's received a fresh deposit from the Bank of Subeta and is back to purchasing gifts!

Why does Melody have a spending limit?
I give Melody a set amount at the start of each season as a safety measure. If every active user joined a Melody pool simultaneously, she could theoretically spend billions in a single day — and I want to make sure we're aware if that ever needs to happen. The team now gets a Slack alert when she's running low, so we can check whether it's normal activity or something that needs attention.

Bug Fix: Email Verification Links Now Working! Kumos Bug Fix

Fixed a critical bug where email verification links sent to new users were failing with an "Access Denied" error. The verification links were being generated correctly, but a mismatch in how they were validated was causing them to be rejected. If you registered in the past few weeks and couldn't verify your email, please request a new verification link from the login page - it will work now!

  • 🎁 Apology Gift for Affected New Users! To all users who registered in the past three weeks and experienced this frustrating verification issue: we're truly sorry! As an apology, we've added 1,000 Cash Shop Credits to your account. Thank you for your patience while we sorted this out. Welcome to Subeta!

Visual Update: Quest Bar Redesign! Kumos Visual Update

The quest bar got a fresh new look! It now stretches edge-to-edge without any rounded corners for a cleaner appearance. Quest items are now displayed with smaller 32x32 images aligned to the left with item names to the right, making better use of space.

New Feature: Feedback Polls! Kumos New Feature

We've built a new polling system to help us gather your feedback and make Subeta better! You'll occasionally see a quick poll pop up after completing quests - answering takes just a few seconds and earns you 10,000 sP as a thank you. We'll be using these polls more throughout the site to hear what you think about different features, so keep an eye out!

Melody's Cottage Achievements Now Awarding Properly! Kumos Bug Fix

Fixed a bug where achievements like "Melody Regular 2025" and "Lumineve Regular 2025" weren't being awarded even when you hit the required number of visits. The progress was tracking correctly, but the actual achievement tier wasn't being granted. If you've been visiting Melody faithfully and were missing your achievement, just visit again tomorrow and it should pop!

Improvement: Smarter Quest Item Selection! Kumos Improvement

Quests are now more resilient when their item pools are limited. Instead of failing completely when items are scarce, quests will:

  • Gradually widen price and rarity ranges to find available items

  • Request fewer items if needed (but at least 1 per pool)

  • Only go to sleep when absolutely no items can be found

This means quests like the Librarian's Reading List will stay available even when their curated item pools are running low, while still respecting the thematic item selections.

Bug Fix: Saggitarius Quest Item Selection Fixed! Kumos Bug Fix

Fixed a bug where Saggitarius was repeatedly asking for the same few items (like Funnel Cake and Red Candy Cane) that weren't even supposed to be in his quest pool. The quest system was incorrectly selecting hoarded items from the economy without checking if they were actually in the quest's allowed item locations. Now quest givers will only request items from their designated item pools.

This happened to Saggitarius in particular due to an upgrade to the system I did yesterday, targeting his quests.

Forums: Additional Pages Kumos Improvement

The pages that you probably miss from the legacy forums, including staff posts and the ability to see your own posts/topics has returned!

Also, a small playground to see how sCode + markdown work together on Kumos.

Mysterious Melody Got Smarter! Kumos Improvement

Based on your feedback, we've made several improvements to how Mysterious Melody works:

  • No More Getting Your Own Items Back: You'll no longer receive the same type of item you contributed, even if someone else put in the same thing. If you contributed a Subeautique Invitation, you won't get one back!

  • More Variety from Melody: Melody now avoids buying duplicate item types within the same pool and won't repurchase the same items across multiple pools within 24 hours. This means more diverse gifts for everyone!

  • Better Wishlist Recommendations: The wishlist peek now shows a badge when an item has already been contributed to the pool, so you can choose something different and maximize everyone's chances of getting something unique.

  • Rebalanced Item Selection: Melody's purchasing strategy now includes more random finds and advent calendar items alongside wishlist items, making the gift exchange more exciting and unpredictable.

Gold Accounts resolved! Kumos Bug Fix

Sorry about that - all users who should have a gold account (from a subscription, item, or buddy GA) should have their access restored.

This was a runaway script that is supposed to verify that people have the correct access on the site :(

Fishing Game Equipment & Prize Issues! Kumos Bug Fix

As a reminder, the fishing game is in beta on Kumos!

Fixed several issues with the fishing game system:

  • Equipment purchased from the fishing shop now properly validates ownership before game creation

  • Improved rare item distribution - quest storage prizes are now restricted to advanced+ difficulties only (was affecting all difficulties)

  • Enhanced error handling for prize awarding with better logging to help diagnose delivery failures

  • Added clearer UI hints to remind players to activate their equipment during gameplay

  • Reduced quest storage prize chance from 30% to 15% to better balance rewards

Database Improvements Kumos Technical

We have been comically underusing our database capacity, so I updated the configuration to take advantage of all of the resources on the DB server as possible. I also increased the frequency of our backups.

Floating Items come to Kumos! Kumos New Feature

You'll find those pesky fairies flying around Kumos now, and with additional support for future holidays.

There is a _slight_ change from legacy, you'll have to perform an action (in the case of Fairies it's holding down for 1 second) to add it to your inventory.

Bug Fix: Fixed Vending Machine Crashes! Kumos Bug Fix

Vending machines were occasionally crashing with "Attempt to read property 'id' on null" errors when the machine's currency, location, or limit settings weren't properly configured. Now the machines properly handle these configuration issues with helpful error messages instead of crashing.

Bug Fix: Fixed Quest Completion Cache Error! Kumos Bug Fix

Resolved a frequent error that was preventing the item availability cache from updating properly after completing quests. This was causing stale data in the quest selection system, which could potentially show items as available when they weren't. The cache now updates correctly every time you complete a quest.

Luminaire Tree Gifts Now Update the Tree Image! Kumos Bug Fix

When you place a gift under someone's tree, the present pile beneath their tree will now actually update to reflect the new gifts. Previously the image was getting cached and wouldn't show the updated gift count until much later.

The trees on the gallery page, and in the builder, always reflect the correct number of presents becasue they're built ✨ on the fly 🎄.

New Feature: Tree BBCode! Kumos New Feature

You can now share your Luminaire tree on kumos in forum posts, profiles, and anywhere else that supports sCode using [tree=username]. It displays your tree image with a link so others can visit and leave gifts!

More importantly, all those places you've already been using it on legacy will work on Kumos!
