Rule Change! In the past four years, Subeta has disallowed chatspeak, and had a list of allowed words. While this was (very) nice while we had a small user base, we've grown, and so has 'chatspeak'. People use it jokingly (I do! :P), etc.
So - we have removed the rule. If you've been given a warning in the past for it, your warning count will not go down, but that warning no longer counts (UAs can see what you've been warned for)
For those of you crying right now, because you're afraid of how the forums are going to start looking - don't worry. We've put in place a super cool chatspeak filter, that will slowly get better and better, and make annoying people less annoying ;)

You got it. I completely agree!

I sure hope the filter works. Just the chatspeak in these news comments has already made me cringe, and I am fairly sure most of it was meant as a joke. Fairly.
Oh my. This is strange. Oh well. Never go on the boards anymore because of it anyways. It gives me a headache just to try and read it all.

thats awesome!! i got busted twice for typing the letter u!!! wooo
Honestly, I think bad spelling/grammar and excessive typoing are the things that get me most. I mean, chatspeek's annoying (And I really only mock or use it for fun on YIM with friends.) but it's at least kinda standardized. People who just blatantly butcher the English language make me want to weep.

Yay! Nice going Luxe, I know you were going for it! I have a feeling this will be interesting xD

sigh I'll try to learn chatspeak, then. I am not a native English speaker, so chatspeak makes things a bit harder to understand for me. As long as the announcements are not written like that, I'm ok with this.
...a giveaway to celebrate, please? XDD

Not ALL stupid people use chatspeak is what I'm trying to get across. (and not all people who use chatspeak are stupid)
.. Yeah. I'm all about telling people they're not allowed to use a comment box? <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /> <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /> <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
Ya ttly, DNA! Tnx for pointing that out~ And besides, I do use some of the basics, too, as well as some of the cutesy spellings for things, but I really am smart. XP
On one hand, I'm going to need a new bottle of Tylenol from all the headaches anything that slips through the filter will cause me. On the other hand, it should be interesting to see how well the filter works. Maybe seeing their posts in regular English will make them type in that English by default? One can only hope. I'm for the change, despite the possibility of the increased headaches. I just hope the filter works as well as we all want it to. <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />
Of course there is, I'm not stupid. I said one way to weed them out. There isn't a sure-fire way to get them out, but this helped.
Do note that this also frees us up to mock chatspeak without fear of getting in trouble for it. mi right guyz lol?
i don't think this is going to be as bad as people make it out to be. honestly, i use a bit of chatspeak myself (lulz, srs, omg, etc.) but that doesn't mean that i'm uneducated.

I just hope it doesn't get out of hand or abused, plus I wonder how the chatspeak filter works.
ah! i think the celebratory giveaway is a brilliant idea. i was working and mostly missed yesterday's festivities <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" />

spiralex: It was the primary contributing factor when the game itself was set aside. shrug Doesn't matter. I'm finished with my little displeasure over this change. Feces occurs.
People are always screaming about 'n00bs' and annoying people, one way to get those annoying people weeded out from this site and the rule is changed. brilliant idea.
So I'm thinking some peeps needa pull dem sticks owt and take a step back. <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/smiley_xface.gif" border="0" /> CONDEMNCONDEMN! How about seeing how things pan out and then passing judgement? Nono. That would require patience! Why be patient, when you already know better?! <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /> <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /> <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
....There was a rule on no chatspeak? o_o Well, I don't use chatspeak anyway, unless "lol" and "omg" count.. I know expressions like =/, ^^, and the like aren't considered chatspeak, but I'm still not sure about lol and omg. I guess not.
Anyway.. at least there's a filter. That's more than other sites cough blinding-yellow-vector-site cough do.

Yays for filters~ ^.^ And honestly, those of us who are literate and intelligent will continue to write so, I'm sure, so we shouldn't have to worry horribly. Then again, this site does advertise on Tektek and half of Gaia's population is n00bs. x.x

Galena, you mean you stayed on subeta because chatspeak wasn't allowed or did I mis-understood?
People need to lighten up. Really. If some letters stringed together on the computer screen really upset you then... I dunno... maybe you need to go out in public, and witness real stupidity.
It's the minimod's who should be enforcing this rule. If they break it enough, those illiterates will be frozen, right? Therefore, less annoying people on the site. I don't even like using 'chatspeak' when I'm texting someone, it's just lazy. Allowing it just allows laziness.

Yep. closes forum window That was the ONE main contributing factor for me staying on this site really... and that just got blown to hell.
WHY? Makes no bloody sense. Why change a system that worked?
I'm likely in the minority here, but I think this completely sucks.
ends visit to the soap box

I personnally do like using some chatspeak but creating a rule for that is lolable <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

well. our eyes will burn now x_X on the plus side: I was -really- getting annoyed whenever I said something like ZOMG! or omgwtfbbq! and people went "please don't use chatspeak". o_x a good day it is.
Hahaaaaaaaaaaa. Yeah. Rofflecopterlolmayosandwiches @ Galena's little slip-up when making a point of NOT using chatspeak. x) Backfiyah! XD!!

I think people who hate chatspeak will soon realize that this is a far better solution than getting a warning for each instance of chatspeak on the site, just because you thought it was acceptable. Subeta's rule was so illogical in that it seemed to accept acronyms, but not all of them were acceptable! And I think this will be easier on the UAs in terms of knowing what to enforce. It's so hard to keep up with a list, when chatspeak is a growing and dynamic "language." That was really an obsolete solution, only appropriate for when the site was small and easier to manage, like Keith said.
Personally, I'd rather the UAs enforce the rules that really inhibit people from playing the game, like finding multiple accounts, scammers, cheaters, etc.

Hooray. More mindless idiots can abuse the English language. If it gets out of hand, please say you will put the original (better) rules back in place and disallow it.
This is a very sad day <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" />
