Rule Change! In the past four years, Subeta has disallowed chatspeak, and had a list of allowed words. While this was (very) nice while we had a small user base, we've grown, and so has 'chatspeak'. People use it jokingly (I do! :P), etc.
So - we have removed the rule. If you've been given a warning in the past for it, your warning count will not go down, but that warning no longer counts (UAs can see what you've been warned for)
For those of you crying right now, because you're afraid of how the forums are going to start looking - don't worry. We've put in place a super cool chatspeak filter, that will slowly get better and better, and make annoying people less annoying ;)

i have a user friend that was frozen to she was useing text like you insted of the wor dose that count if so can she be unfrozen
Just because we can use chatspeak doesn't mean we can say ANYTHING we want. I still can't swear. I still can't tell idiots who stupid they are either. <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" />
But really... English site. People who aren't as comfortable with the English language are going to struggle on SUbeta and it has nothing to do with chatspeak.

I have a friend who was frozen in the past she said it was for repeated warning about chat speak and she wasnt using it she said she just wrote in caps a lot. Does this mean she can get unfrozen?

It is unfair because non english speakers like me have more and more difficulties to understand you, people.
I have a warning for speak in spanish with a girl from Spain, but the people who speaks in english can say wherever they want?
I think that's unfair.

I read that there will be a filter. But I already read also some chat-speaking expressions in these comments that I didn't understand. And I mean, these examples are a so little part of the chatspeaking 'vocabulary'.

Kartikanaja, did you miss the part where they're putting in a filter? Most stuff will be 'translated' back to 'normal' anyway.
Why does everything have to be about fairness? xD
Just cuz you dislike a change doesn't mean it's OMG UNFAIR!

A chatspeak filter?! AWESOME. Now all the u's can be turned into proper you's no matter what the poster types!
adds self to whiner list
I agree that most folks know lol, omg, imo, btw, etc, but it can get so out of hand. I am worried that the forums will know look like those at Neopets. sigh

Giving out warnings for chat speak I think was petty in the past, so I'm glad that there's a filter that will (hopefully) work to keep the ugliness away.

that's so unfair for those people who are not from England, Usa, Australia and so on. This new 'rule' will exclude other users from the forums, 'cause WE will feel so silly and stupid to ask everytime 'what does it mean bhlabhla' .
Well, since I dont know half the chatspeak, all i know are:people, brb, ttyl, prolly, imho, imo, fyi, and i think that is it....what about thepeople who dont know chatspeak and will look dumb asking what certain words are?

What about GA extension? What about tons of items lost by users? Everything is fine? Do you think that with the giveaway all is ok? I would like to have some news.

Does that mean topics I've said 'pls' in will be unlocked?
Though...I remade it, soooo....never mind x:
THANK YOU FOR THIS WONDERFUL CHANGE <3 I subconsciously sound out certain chatspeak when I TALK, so it's hard not to type them! I mean, come on <3

I think this filter is causing a couple minor issues... such as on my profile, it has replaced any number four to the word 'for' in user edited fields. Meh.

Greaaat. I believe this is the day I close the Shoutbox forever. Nice job, nice frickin job.
I use a few words, like ''lol, and omg.'' So, I don't think that this will be a problem for me, because I still type a message, without adding ''lol'' at the end of some points.
Hmm, did any other coding change? My pet profiles are different, and my profile image doesn't want to work, even though I put the background back up again.

I had no idea that was even a rule.. but yeah, the staff obviously dislike chatspeak as much as the users do here, so it's hardly going to take over. :3

I don't like this rule change, but I'm not going to debate it during months. I'll simply ignore chatspeak posts for now. I don't mind a "u" or a "r" sometimes, but 10 lines of chatspeak...ugh, especially since English is not my first language. If people can't make a effort to be understandable, I don't see why I should make the effort of TRYING to understand what they say. That's it ^^ And i hope the filter will work! =)

I'm not annnoyed, I don't speak english, I speak in Spanish and it's a little hard to understand english enough to me.
I do understand chatspeak, but I don't want to do a double translation in my head, so If you don't speak well in my profile or threads I will not listen to you.
That's it.

Finally! I have to say, I was a little more than ticked when I got a warning for imitating chatspeak. I like this system a lot better, it's a lot less black and white than before. Good job and thanks :]
What the heck happened? Did you alter any other coding, because suddenly my main and pet profiles are wonky and the links I cut/pasted directly from my pet pages are leading to "No Such Pet" errors and to another pet that's not mine. What happened? o.o

Filters are good ^^ Can you put up a pirate filter on talk like a pirate day? 8D
Oh boy. This is going to be fun.. Thank god there will be a filter. Hope it works. I'm not quite upset, but I'm not happy about it either. I don't mind mild useage of chatspeak, but every word people type being chatspeak is indeed just being lazy...
I have to say that I'm guilty of it. I blame 2 12 years of playing WoW. When you're trying to type something while killing something...it's just easier to type as few letters as possible and still get the point across. After doing it so long...it kind of stuck with me. >.> But like others have said..I do keep it simple here...(lol, omg, wth, lawlz) It's more for entertainment than anything. I seriously doubt it will dumb anyone down.
Yeah I use things like "Omg, wtf, wth, lol, lawlz, amg, zomg, ect.." xD So yeah, I agree with you there. Sometimes you just wanna fly through things when your typing..

Well, I'm a little disappointed, because I thought that was one of the rules that set this site apart from the others, but I'm sure it won't be the end of the world. There will be some who will use it excessively for a little while, simply because they can, but I think the novelty will wear off after a while. Not the end of the world.

well i had better get all of my 100 posts into the forums. Because Chat speak is just pure laziness.

Like if it wasn't enough problem understand english, now I have to understand deformated versions of it?
Don't put a filter, put a translator for me, thanks. =U_U=

Not too supportive of this change <img src="http://www.subeta.org/images/smilies/6398_emoticon_shocked.gif" border="0" />

Well I'll wait and see how the filters work before I get too upset. But I do hate chatspeak and I feel for non-English speakers who have to try and figure out what is being said.

So in other words, whenever I "jokingly" speak like an lolcat, now it'll be filtered?
I'd rather of had the warnings. XD
