My story...

The virus better known as the Tepes Strain after the infamous ruler who was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's famous novel Dracula had consumed the entire planet. No one knew where the original strain derived from but some speculated South America while others say it was created by the United States military in order to create a new breed of super soldier. Nonetheless, the method of how it was released has yet to be determined. Within the span of ten years it had spread throughout the population. Infecting within minutes yet the result of the infection would not show for at least forty eight hours.
Symptoms often included sensitivity to light, high fever, profuse sweating and dryness of mouth. These symptoms would lead to the skin becoming hot to the touch and abdominal cramping, which was a sign that the virus was entering the second stage. The second stage of the virus was called the calm before the storm and it is in this stage that the virus seemed to go into remission, hiding away amongst the healthy cells before surging forth in one last hurrah.

The third stage mostly consists of the body finally accepting the virus with a few intense bouts of pain in the head and chest. It's in this stage that the fangs begin to develop and the craving not just for the desire for blood but a need to consume blood solidifies. Women, however, rarely make it past the first stage and scientists still have no explanation to why this is and one out of five women don't make it after they are infected. Pregnant women have a high chance to pass the virus onto her child but this is very rare and only a small percentage have been document as being born with the virus.

We have now learned that there are several strains of the virus and they are listed on a scale of one to five. One being the most benign and five, being the most severe and it is this individual that must be removed from the rest of the population and placed in protected zones called Hives. Those who aren’t infected are frequently tested once a month and are mandatory. Those who refuse to be tested are sent to the army base to be forcefully tested. Even the ways we live have been affected. Religion, education and government have been radically altered in accordance to social class. Those who are considered wealthy are given the best opportunities while the rest of us were appointed jobs and living quarters which are all monitored by the military police. Individuals are required to carry sector passes at all times. There are three levels of passes, bronze which is the standard pass and the majority of the population has them. They allowed a person to work in the lowest sectors or better known as the slums. Then there are silver passes that allow professionals such as doctors, lawyers, business owners to work and live in the second level or sector of the city and are labeled middle and upper class. The gold pass is the one only given to government officials or the wealthier citizen. Those who don’t have their passes can be fined or arrested depending on the individual’s criminal history.

This is where my story begins.

My parents were scientists and they were working on a way to stop the virus in its early stage however just as my parents learnt of their pregnancy, my parents contracted the virus from an infected blood sample. I was born after the virus had ravaged the planet and my birth was an unusual one. My mother was already infected when I was conceived. I was one of the few children born with the virus and although my family was considered middle class, we were sent to one the hive slums. My parents were allowed to keep working in the medical field but were given limited access to files and research data. Yet no matter how much they tried, the virus seemed to be one step ahead. They thought they found an antidote or at least a way to halt the progress but were not given proper equipment to test the serum so desperate for a cure, they became guinea pigs themselves. The serum had an adverse effect on them, it made them bleed internally and no matter how many the doctors tried, they were unable to save them. Father went first followed by mother and I was forever alone.

I was placed into foster care where I remained until I turned eighteen. I was then given my appointed job and housing arraignments which I have had until this day. I have been closely monitored since my birth on the progress of the virus but it seems it has somehow merged with my healthy cells creating an entirely new strain.
