Centropolis: It is one of the richest places to live with big lights, flashy fashion wear, outlandish foods and a variety of people. It is the jeweled city of Subeta...

However, there is a dark side to any city. Urchins and orphans run through alleys trying to find food, scraps and generally resort to dumpster diving for anything they can use to survive. Homeless people migrate to this rich city looking and hoping for work, anything to help them get on their feet, only to find that in this expensive place, they are unable to afford the most meager of places. Most deign not to see these poor unfortunate souls, but not the owner of the Chitt-Chatt Cakery and Candy Shoppe.

Celine, or Chitters as friends called her, was a small time baker in the heart of down town Centropolis. She saw the children, the homeless, destitute and weak walking by her shop every day but never really thought about it. Centropolis was a very expensive town to live in, and that was the way things were.

The Chitt-Chatt Cakery and Candy Shoppe was pink, and frilly. Even the food she baked was white, pink and red thanks to various pink and red food dyes, unless of course it was chocolate. No amount of dyes would change that color. But, the pink hues added to the romantic scene she wanted. She had named the shop in honor of her friends. When they had all attended school together, they had teasingly called her "Chitters" instead of her real name Celine because she was always talking and running around excitedly much like one of the squirrels they saw in Centropolis' park and that was especially true now that she ran the bakery. At the time, Chitters had just laughed and went with the silly nickname. Now, several years later, she responded to the nickname more than her real name and she was beginning to think of herself as Chitters.

Turning to her establishment, Chitters smiled to herself, the place, while small was a very popular hang out spot for couples, teens, kids, sweethearts, and even honeymooners. It was a bakery, a coffee shop and a candy store rolled all into one with romantic two seat-er tables scattered about in secluded nooks along with plush couches and bean bag chairs, low tables with rugs and runners. She also had a TV along one wall for the kids to watch. She frequently encouraged the students whom came by to study there, and as an incentive offered free milk and cookies to students actively working on assignments.

She always looked on indulgently at the kids being unable to have children herself. It had been a life long dream to work in a bakery with her family, husband and children. But, at 28 years old, she was still single and the doctors had told her she would never be able to conceive. It left a hollow feeling in her breast. But, she made do with what she had and she had become almost like a second mother to those students whom frequented her shop. She knew the details of their lives, their hopes and dreams, and did what she could to help them along. If they needed money, she would commission them to help her someway. She would pay them handsomely to paint the small white fence outside the store, or have them paint a picture for the bakery if their talents lay there. But she was all the time trying to smile and help the kids. It eased her soul.

Time passed, and one day came that changed Chitter's life forever. She was outside the bakery, sweeping the stepping stones when a small child ran into her. The child was filthy from the streets, obviously alone, scared and starving. The young thing was weak from hunger. It pulled on Chitter's heart strings.

"Sorry Miss" the little boy said as he started to skirt the woman and get away, his face burning with heat.

"Here" she crooned to the child, who could have been no more than about 8 years old. "You are fine." she said holding her hand out to him. "Are you hungry?" she asked him as she motioned to the bakery behind her. "Come on in and get something to eat." The child's nose twitched obviously and Chitters could see the way the huge t-shirt he was wearing hung off his scrawny frame.

"But, I don't have any money" the boy lisped though his missing front two teeth.

"Don't worry about it hunny" Chitters said as she steered the boy towards the bakery and inside where it was warm and out of the cold of the streets. She saw the boy's eyes look around wide in wonder. Chitters sat back enjoying his reaction to all the cookies, cakes, and candies spread around. "Lets get you something to eat, then maybe we can let you have some desert later. Come upstairs and lets get you cleaned up first. I need you clean so you can eat." Chitters smiled and lead the little boy upstairs to her apartment over the bakery. It was very convenient as bakers generally had to wake up extra early in order to make the day's quota of baked goods.

The barren woman lead the little boy to the bathroom and showed him the bath. "Take a bath, and I will bring you some clothes you can wear." The boy nodded and closed the door. Chitters walked back down into the bakery and looked at her assistant, Maureen whom had seen the little boy come in with Chitters and whom had two little boys herself. "Maureen, do you have any old clothes your two cannot fit anymore?" She asked.

Maureen thought a few moments and nodded. "Yes. Charlie recently outgrew some of his pants and a couple shirts, they should still fit the boy, but they are at home about... five blocks away. I cant let go here. The new assistants Ana and Mia would not be able to handle the store."

Chitters shook her head. "I will take care of the store. You run home and get the clothes. And no, dont clock out. You are still on the clock running an errand for me. Hurry up though!" Maureen sketched a salute at Chitters and ran out the bakery as fast as she could. She came back about 10 minutes later, just as the little boy was coming out of the shower with his towel wrapped around him. Chitters was waiting in the hall. "Here" she said holding out the clothes to the blue eyed boy. "Take these and go get dressed."

"Thank you Miss" the boy said as he turned and went back into the bathroom. Chitter's heart melted. Here was an obviously well mannered boy, on the streets with nothing. Starving. It was not this boy's fault, he just happened to be born into the wrong circumstances. It made Chitters think. How many others could be in this same situation? Destitute and alone with no one to help them and no way to help themselves.

When the boy returned he looked up at the woman whom knelt down before him. "What is your name?" She asked kindly.

"I'm Brian" the boy said shyly.

"Well Brian, what do you want to eat?" she asked

Brian looked up at her with his big blue eyes and in the innocence of youth said "Pancakes please!" Chitters laughed. "Alright. Pancakes. Lets go downstairs and I will get you some." She lead the boy back downstairs and helped him up into one of the tall seats so he could watch her bake. "Do you want strawberries or blue berries or chocolate chip pancakes?" she asked happily. She looked at the boy fondly in a moment of stolen motherhood then froze. He didn't have a mother.... she didn't have a son. Who was to say she could not take him in? Chitters looked at the boy with a look of speculation in her eyes.

Bouncing, Brian looked up at Chitters and said "Chocolate chips!" He looked so happy and exuberant, chitters had to laugh. Even Maureen, Ana and Mia behind the counter had to laugh as well as a variety of customers whom were watching the scene unfold. "Okay Okay. Chocolate chips coming up." She said.

In just a few minutes, the pancakes were stuffed with chocolate chips, and smothered with whipped cream and syrup were sitting in front of the boy whom looked upon it with wonder. "This is for me?" he asked in awe.

"Yes" Chitters said benevolently. "And... if you would like, you can stay with me and I can give you pancakes every morning for the rest of your life."

Brian stared at her, looking dumbfounded. "What do you mean?" he asked.

"I mean stay here. I will take care of you, feed you, enroll you in school. You can live here, and if you want, I will make it official with City Hall and adopt you." The boy teared up at her words. "Whats wrong?" she asked as she moved around the corner and hugged him.

"But what about the others?" he bawled.

"The others?" Chitters quoted the boy making it a question with a raised eyebrow.

"Yes. Sanjay and Mary, Billy and Jean." he said.

Chitters thought about it for a few minutes. She had not been prepared for... six hungry mouths, but seeing the tears in the boy's eyes and the extent to which he was upset for them, and his concern moved her. She smiled at Brian. "They can come too. Lets go see them. Just because I cant help everyone, doesn't mean I can't help anyone." She held her hand out to the boy and he hopped down. "Maureen look after the store" she called to her assistant as she walked out and off to meet her prospective children.

That year, they found homes for all the children. They originally stayed with Chitters and Brian. Each were adopted out to loving homes to people whom would cherish them. Of the other children, only Mary stayed with Chitters.

Chitter's life never felt so full. She had two children she loved and whom adored her in turn. But, the whole incident had awakened Chitters to the darker side of living in the great city. Since then, after the bakery closed each night she would open the doors for those whom did not have a place to stay or anything to eat.

She advocated and petitioned for help from the City's officials, posted on her bakery doors her cause and that donations were welcome. She also advertised her cause on the local radio. New customers started pouring in, and the donations came too. The Chitt-Chatt Cakery and Candy Shoppe's popularity soared. After 6 months City Officials granted her petitions for help for the city's hungry.

One night, as a man leaving her bakery having had a full meal grabbed her wrist and said "May god bless you, you are an Angel of Mercy... and I hope you get the reward you deserve in heaven." Chitters blinked, not knowing what to say and before she could the man was gone.

That night, she dreamt. An angel came to her and smiled to her. She could not help but smile back. Then a voice rang in her head "Celine, Chitters, owner of the Chitt-Chatt Cakery and Candy Shoppe, doer of my great works, You have proven yourself. You have shown great self sacrifice and nobility of spirit, generosity and caring for those around you. You will receive your wings upon your death and shall fly free and unburdened, in absolute joy with me for all eternity"

Chitters awoke with a start. She couldn't believe what she had dreamt, but... it was a comforting dream. She smiled to herself as she stood up and walked across the hall to Brian and Mary's bedrooms. She opened the door a crack to look in on them and make sure they were sleeping soundly. She smiled. Even if she did get her wings upon her death, she felt like she had them now. Her angels were Brian and Mary. They brought untold joy to her life and it couldn't be better. These thoughts formed in her mind as she slipped back into her bed and went to sleep, a smile on her lips. No, life could not be better.

Angels can be mythological beings, beings whom help the almighty, or even lowly people whom do small works. This means, a smile, a laugh that is given, or a helping hand are all the traits of an angel. So get out of your seat, go to your Mother and tell her you love her. Tell your Dad, your sister, your brother. Help your neighbors in painting that fence or weeding their garden. Offer to read to the old lady across the street whom has bad eyes and can't do it herself. Offer an old man an ear, listen to him ramble on about the "good old days". Do the little things that make people smile. Then you will be able to show your Angel Heart to all.
