'Mirror, mirror on the wall... I AM the fairest of them all and will be... forever!'

It was the eve of the tyrant queens 'funeral' and all was quiet. No one had come to mourn her pale and lifeless body, aside from a small handful of ravens that had collected on various ledges within the castles interior. Her passing was to be marked as the rebirth of freedom, for Snow White now held the throne and with it she brought life and hope. Despite losing her father and most of her young life to Ravenna, Snow White still wanted to see her put to rest peacefully, so that it would ease the restless minds of her people- who were convinced that the witch would make a comeback. The burning of the false queens body was to mark the start of a new era and hopefully let her tormented soul rest at long last, for she had lived through over twenty long and cruel lifetimes with next to no happiness. With the clock striking twelve and full moon peaking out from behind its clouded blanket, Ravenna's body was finally left alone aside from a few guards that wearily stood watch at either doorway. A few loyal subjects and Snow White herself had been frequenting the hall where the witch lay, to make sure that all was well. Despite reassuring her people that they were safe now, Snow White couldn't quite reassure herself, for the blackness and determination she had seen within Ravenna's eyes still played fresh in her mind. The witch had performed great feats of magic, so what was to stop her scorned soul from returning and seeking out revenge- as well as the fair queen's heart? With a heavy sigh, Snow White set aside her burdens and headed towards her chambers. She may of suspected something going amiss during the events of Ravenna's funeral, yet no amount of imagining could of prepared her for what was about to happen.

The next morning the young queen was woke with a start, as dozens of servants rushed in to wake her. Shes gone my lady, gone my queen! they chanted over and over again, in a flurry of pure panic. What do you mean? Whos gone? Snow White replied, with her mind still rousing. She had slept uneasy that night, for her dreams had been replaced by violent and horrible nightmares- most of which reflected the battle with Ravenna and the murder of her father. Ravenna my queen, oh its Ravenna! Her body, its missing! it was with those few, simple words, that Snow Whites eyes fully opened. Her nightmares were no longer confined to the realm of sleep, she was living everything she had feared. How foolish could she of been to assume that things would be over so easily. Her body is missing?! It cant be missing! What do you mean its missing?! the young queen called in disbelief as storm clouds outside began to open up and bless the thirsty earth below. It was a grim and grey day and a far cry from the sunshine that the locals had predicted. To make matters worse, there was a lingering feeling of dread that clung to every living creatures heart and soul, which in turn made atmosphere almost suffocating. Every hall, ever house, every stable! Throughout the woods and in the rivers, keep looking, keep searching, until you find her! Snow Whites words were laced with worry as she glanced out of her bedroom window and to the gloomy skies. She had cheated death herself once before (although not quite as spectacularly as Ravenna apparently had) and knew all too well that it was more than possible (and more than likely) that the witch was still alive.

------------

She was so angry, inconsolable, almost, with her envious blue eyes staring out of the dusty cabin window and into the blackness of the nighttime abyss. The battle with Snow White was still fresh in the brooding queens mind and it was all she could think about since her resurrection- even though she was in the company of one who would give his all to return her to the throne she saw as rightfully hers. Calhoun, the rogue huntsman that had initially found her weak, ooze and feather-covered body, had grown a bit of an undying affinity for the beautiful queen- and had sworn to help her until his dying day. He held a grudge so strong for the current royalty, that the blackness in his heart almost matched that of the scorned Ravenna, even though their reasons for hating Snow White were quite different. Despite being armed with the knowledge that she had a disposable meat shield by her side, the seething woman still found it hard to put her trust and alliance in him- for the painful memories of a time long gone still insisted on haunting her weary and broken heart. With her distant mind finally acknowledging that she was completely alone without the help of the huntsman (whom rested upon a couple of dirtied pelts just a few feet away), Ravenna allowed her grief-stricken pupils to pull from the darkness of the surrounding forest- so that she could silently stare at him and consider her options. She may not of wanted to stand by the side of someone like him, yet she saw herself with little choice- especially since both her magic and youth were waning without the frequent supply of fresh, vibrant souls from beautiful, young women.

The question was, would Ravenna let the rough, revenge-driven huntsman see her for who she really was, in the hopes of forming some kind of bond through kindred spirits? Or would she deceive him with her beauty and bring him to an untimely death after she had achieved her goal- just like she had with all others whom she feigned alliance with? All of that was to be decided by the venomous queen, for all she craved at the moment was to rest her tired body and recover her strength. With her eyes narrowing and shooting a less than friendly glare towards Calhoun as he slept, Ravenna carefully pulled herself away from the mud-splashed window- so that she could creep over to the furthest corner of the decaying cabin and make herself comfortable upon a couple of grubby wolf skins. She did not doze off right away, however, even though her aching body desperately needed the sleep, for her suspicious mind and hateful heart insisted on keeping her awake until the early hours of the following day.

The following morning Ravenna roused from her uneasy sleep to the smell of burning meat and it caused her sore eyes to open and glance across the single room of the cabin. She was alone, although Calhoun couldn't of gone far- judging by the fact he had left the door open and the overwhelming scent of burnt flesh was wafting in through it. With a heavy and irritated sigh, the tired queen forced herself up- so that she could rub at her blurry eyes with a single hand, before slowly wandering over to the same window she had been looking out of the night before. It was morning now and the enchanted forest seemed so much more beautiful, with it's delicate green leaves and mossy tree trunks humming with the sounds of the wild. The glorious, life-filled sight did not entertain Ravenna however, nor did it appease her burning anger. If anything, the happy wildlife and singing birds only served to irritate her further. With a disgruntled sneer, the woman pulled her intense and displeased gaze away from the tarnished glass- so that she could glance over to the open door once more. She much preferred it when it was nighttime, or even better, winter, because at least she was not subjected to the merry atmosphere that came with the summer sun.

Ravenna slowly proceeded to remove herself from the window ledge, so that she could stride over to the open door and make her annoyance known to the outside world. She did not step out and into the daylight, however, not at first at least, for she desired to locate her newfound 'friend' before traveling any further. With her sharp nails and jeweled claw ring drumming a slow and well-timed rhythm upon the rotting wood of the doorframe, the queen allowed her small pupils to scout the nearby bushes and trees. She had not spotted the huntsman through the dirtied glass of the cabin window, yet the stench of cooking meat made her assume that he was still around. Hey... Glad to see you are finally awake... Calhoun's gruff voice finally broke the twitter-filled air of the buzzing forest, although Ravenna could not say that she found it anymore desirable to listen to then the chirping birds or scurrying insects. With intense, unblinking gaze slowly rolling over and to the left of the small hut, the queen finally found who she had been looking for. Calhoun had slept well the previous night, despite his unusual company and had woken early to prepare some of the other days kill for her. "I hope you're hungry, there is ple--", "I'm not." her words were as sharp and unpleasant as her relentless glare as she narrowed her eyes to the man that was fanning the open fire. His 'kindness' would receive no thanks from her haughty, hurting soul- not now and not ever. With a single hand clutching at the pelt that covered her tar-stained body in a cloak-like fashion, Ravenna allowed her bare feet to take a couple of steps outside- so that she could get a better look of her surroundings. Which direction is the nearest river in, huntsman? she muttered, in the same harsh tone, before slowly stepping around the open fire and cooked deer meat. She did not turn to look at him as she spoke, nor did she allow her tired eyes to blink. Instead, she simply continued to hatefully stare out and into the surrounding forest. Despite still being a little taken back by her rudeness and the fact she had finally opted to talk to him (as she had subjected him to nothing but silence since the hour he had found her and she had come round), Calhoun forced himself to reply as politely as he could- even if he wanted to question her lack of appetite further. North, it's not far. It's the whole reason why I-- before he could even finish his words, Ravenna was to be heard slipping away and into the greenery of the lively trees. Much to Calhoun's dismay, she had not thanked him, said goodbye or even looked back. She had simply just began to wander off- without so much as a single whisper. With a perplexed raise of his brow, the man sighed heavily. The forest, despite being full of mostly harmless creatures, still had its dangers and the fair woman whom had just left his cabin was most certainly not equipped to deal with any form of trouble- or so he thought. Unknown to the man of the wilds, Ravenna still carried a fair bit of her strength and black magic- even though most of it had been weakened by the vicious blade of Snow White. After tossing the meat he had been chewing upon into the fire, Calhoun set about grabbing his bow and a spare dagger- so that he could eagerly chase after the queen whom had left so abruptly.

"Hey... Hey! Hey!" the huntsman called as he weaved in and out of the ensnaring vines and snagging branches, in the hopes of getting the less than friendly queens attention. Unfortunately, Calhoun's cries were to fall only on deaf ears, for Ravenna paid little attention to his feeble attempts of conversation. "These forests, they are not safe!" he tried once more, as the woman slipped out of sight behind a large, moss-covered tree. "There are beasts here, some that not even I would dare handle" with his dark brows creasing into a heavy-set frown, Calhoun charged after Ravenna a little faster- so that he could extend a single hand and place it on one of her shoulders in the hopes of slowing her quickened pace. Unfortunately, his attempts to stop the distant queen were met with a harsh explosion of emotion, for she had ripped out of his grip and whirled around to face him no sooner had he dared to touch her. "How DARE you touch me! HOW DARE YOU!" her fearsome words tore into the air in the form of a firm, reprimanding shout. The angered tone of her voice, combined with her unrelenting and piercing stare, was more than enough to let huntsman know that he had crossed a line and displeased her greatly. "Whoa, hey, stop, listen... It's not safe here, you can't jus-" Calhoun found himself interrupted once more as Ravenna slowly began to step closer. "Do not tell me what I can and cannot do, huntsman..." the witch uttered, as her infuriated pupils remained firmly locked within his own, "and do NOT touch me again, huntsman, EVER. Do I make myself clear?!". Her commanding tones were matched by an equally commanding slap, as she had wasted no time in raising her jewelry covered hand and laying it against his face in a single, hard and fast swing of her palm. The impact was enough to mark both Calhoun's skin and pride, for the queen had made no attempt to curb her anger- even though he was only looking out for her well-being. A faint slither of dark crimson swiftly followed the reddened patch of skin, for Ravenna's large claw-ring had caught the hunters flesh and torn it. The woman did not apologize for her actions though, nor did she show any remorse for the pain she had just caused. She was far too caught up in the uncomfortable emotions Calhoun had stirred up inside of her tormented soul to care, not that she would of anyway- not when she had previously been betrayed by both men and huntsmen alike.

The journey down to the riverbank was both quiet and awkward, very awkward in fact. Ravenna strode ahead, weaving in and out of the snagging bushes and wide trees, oblivious to Calhoun as he tagged in tow like a lost puppy. A couple of times he took in a deep breath, only to release it in a heavy sigh. He wanted to talk and break the awful silence, yet he found himself at a loss for words. The queen was just so haughty and dismissive, even after he had rescued her and done his utmost best to be polite and civil. She had turned to glare at him from over her shoulder from time to time, with a face like thunder and pupils most intense. She didn't want to hear him speak, nor did she really want to have him following her, yet, she was unfortunately stuck with the huntsman- thanks to her weakened state. She was also thankful that he seemed to be one of the odd few who had no idea who she was, or appeared to be at least, considering he had not once called her 'queen' or by her name. The last thing she wanted was to be stuck among rebels who hated her, or worse, for she had little time and little energy to be dealing with the likes of would-be heroes.

With her bare feet sinking deeper and deeper into the marshy ground, Ravenna smiled to herself a little. The sensation of the sloppy mud oozing through her small toes was hardly pleasing, yet it did suggest that they were drawing ever nearer to the river that Calhoun claimed to exist. "How much further, huntsman?" the ex-queen finally hissed, whilst passing a momentary glance back at the man who so eagerly trailed her. Her gaze was a lot softer now, yet it was by no means friendly. Ravenna was simply eased by the fact that they were making progress towards her destination. "Not far now, miss, just a few more paces and--" before he could even finish his words, Ravenna was gone. She had slipped behind a couple of trees and into the humming foliage with a single flick of the pelt that she held so tightly to her body. With his brows initially raising in both surprise and disgust, Calhoun charged after once more- determined not to let her slip away.

When the pair finally reunited, Ravenna was already neck-deep within the soft river current. Her pale skin shivered and tingled under its icy touch, yet it did not stop her from splashing the cool liquid on her dirtied face. She washed herself repetitively, despite having Calhoun already bathe her grubby face and arms once before. It was almost as if she wished to wash away his kindness and belittle his good deeds- an action which caused the Huntsman to sigh and turn his head defiantly to one side. Ravenna may of been beautiful, but she was most certainly difficult too.

------------

It was early that morning when the first slither of sunlight kissed her fair flesh and turned it a light shade of gold. She was radiant, glowing even, with her skin and body full of youth and life. That night she had slept well and for the first time in her life, Ravenna had not dreamt of her mother or brother. She had slept easy, without her dreams being haunted by the bloodshed, pain and fire. The ex-queen had not dreamed at all in fact, she had simply slept the night away- without so much as a single murmur or squirm. The life the young girl had brought to her had temporarily eased her unsettled soul and healed the blemishes of age from her skin, which meant she was left looking as beautiful as she always had when she was at the peak of her power. With her fleshy pink lips curled into the smallest of smirks, Ravenna stirred from her sleep, so that her grey-tinted eyes could open and take in the life of the forest that surrounded them. She still hated it, hated the life, the buzzing insects and chirping birds, yet today her envy was subdued. She could feel the dark magic coursing strong in her veins once more and it filled her defeated heart with a newfound confidence. With her small pupils scouting the surrounding foliage once more before finally landing on the curled up body of the huntsman, Ravenna allowed a single hand to outstretch- so that she could firmly joust at his shoulder with one of her slender, jewel adorned fingertips. She was ready to go and wanted to not wait a moment more. If he wanted to sleep the morning away, then so be it, that was his choice. She on the other hand, was most certainly not waiting around. Things had to be done, her status of peasantry had to be rectified. She had to get her crown- with or without the sleeping man.

Fortunately, it didn't take the hunter long to stir from his deep slumber- even if his initial waking was greeted by a thumping headache. He had not slept quite as well as the queen, thanks to her snatching most of the pelts and taking them solely for herself. The nights air had been cold, bitter in fact, yet he still couldn't find it in himself to say no to Ravenna- not when she stared at him with those intense blue eyes. With his joints still stiff and sore from the cold of the night, Calhoun forced himself to sit up and move his weary body from laying upon the muddy forest floor. The queen didn't say anything as she watched him move, nor did she thank him for his kindness. Instead, she simply threw the thick animal pelts at him, before dusting herself off and standing up by his side. The corpse of the young woman, who's youth she had consumed, still rested a couple of feet away, in the shade of a gnarled tree. Ravenna felt no sympathy for her cold and lifeless body, which was deeply set with wrinkles and wiry grey hair. Why would she? She had her youth and beauty back, alongside some of her immense magic. The girl that was once sweet sixteen had only had to suffer the blemishes of time for a short while, until Calhoun had plunged one of his rusted daggers deep into her heart. Had she not been kind to the maiden? Had she not ended her suffering after taking what she had wanted? In the queens eyes, it would of been far more brutal to have let her go on living- a teenager trapped in the body of an old and haggard woman.

As the pair continued to progress through the forest, days passed, days which turned into weeks. Ravenna grew restless and occasionally, she took her anger out on the huntsman with cruel words or heavy blows from one of her dainty wrists. She often wondered if he really was on her side, if he really did intend to help her. Once or twice, she considered leaving him and finding her own way, yet that idea was short-lived each and every time it entered her head. How could she make her own way? She knew the lands, villages and names, yet she did not know the paths needed to find them, not within the thick undergrowth of the wilds. Besides, despite being utterly revolting in her world, Calhoun did have his uses. He was perfect for luring young, naive girls away from nearby towns- with his dark, untamed hair and bright blueeyes. She could never be convincing enough to get a girl to follow her into the forest for her black magics sake, not without being noticed at least. He however, was and would do her bidding at a drop of a hat, for he found the queen far from revolting.

As they switched from cabin to cabin and drifted from cave to cave, Calhoun would find himself at the beckoning call of Ravenna more frequently. With each soul that she stole, she found herself craving more. She was drunk off of the high that came with each young life that was taken. She needed the youth and beauty, she needed the power- just like the world needed its true queen back. She couldn't deny being slightly thankful for the help the huntsman provided though, even if she did little to show her gratitude. Without him, she would of surely withered away as her magic waned. He was providing her with life and the spirits of young women- and all for nothing, well, almost nothing, as he too wished to get revenge on the young queen known as Snow White. His unyielding loyalty had the witch occasionally questioning his true motives, yet she never pried too deeply or too much- out of the fear of pushing him away. He was hypnotized by her beauty and she needed him on side, for the time being whilst she was weak, at least. She would be ready if he decided to turn on her like all the others, however, and would show no mercy- even though he had shown her initial kindness.

Friends:

You know nothing of what I do or do not understand, trickster! I am allied with you because I want something that is currently unobtainable by myself, NOT because I feel some form of bond or attachment for you and your pathetic plight! Now, because we are unfortunately allied, I demand that you do not leave my side unless I order you to do so- do I make myself clear?! You will do this for me, Loki, you will not leave me or deceive me!

A man of your trade betrayed me once before, huntsman. Do you really think that I am foolish enough to put my in trust in you? *She turned to the huntsman, shooting him an icy glare as she done so. She was intrigued by his words, yet she refused to let her interest show.* I will decide who I will and will not ally with. He has the upper hand, where you fall short. Whatever it is you know, I am sure that it will not interfere with our deal. You better not interfere either, huntsman, or else you will find yourself on the receiving end of my wrath!
