Name: Xoie (zohee)
Age: 5
Likes: Cookies, cupcakes, tutus, her brother Beau, helping her mother bake, playing in her sandbox, the undead, and Meepers.
Dislikes: Losing her favorite tulle tutu, her brother Beau, bedtime, and people who say mean things.

Xoie sat at the edge of her sandbox, digging her toes into the warm sand as she mapped out a new sandcastle idea in her mind. With the remains of her recent creation crumbling in the dry summer air, she felt it was time for a new one anyway. Just then, a fat rain drop fell on her overturned sand bucket, making a loud plunking noise. She looked up just in time for another raindrop to fall right in the middle of her forehead. Her brother, Beau, would love to play out in the rain, but he and their father were gone at the frog show. Beau had entered his pet frog, Clyde, into the competition and was hoping to at least get third place.

Like a flash, her mother, Fantine, was at the back door calling her inside so she didn't get rained on. Xoie grabbed her bucket and trudged through the yard. When she reached the back door, she tossed the bucket to the side, wincing as it hit the ground with a loud crack.

"Hey little one, don't be so glum! It's raining today, but tomorrow your sand will be easier to build with," her mother cooed. "Besides, I'm going to need help in the kitchen today!"

Xoie's face lit up and she started hopping around the kitchen in excitement.

"Now, I will need my helper to wear her hat," Fantine said, and plopped a floppy chef's hat onto her head, and wrapped one of her trademark aprons around Xoie's little waist. "Hm," Fantine stepped back and inspected her baker-in-training. "It's a bit big, but you are growing into it so fast!"

Xoie giggled, and followed her mother to the counter where most of the ingredients were waiting to be used. She found herself gawking at everything that was piled on the counter, and for a moment had a fear that they wouldn't be able to bake enough cookies in time.

The reason behind the vast amount of cookies they had to make was a picnic that the Undead Community was having in celebration of the upcoming Morostide holiday. They tore into the baking, and after hours of hard work, there were hundreds by the time they were through! She begged and begged but her father, Skitters, would not be swayed by even her best puppy eyes, and told her she should wait until the picnic. Of course this didn't sit well with Xoie, as she felt she was entitled to at least one since she had worked so hard helping her mother to bake them! Even her brother, Beau, was hoping to have at least one cookie after his frog placed second on the competition!

She and Beau devised a plan to sneak into the kitchen when their parents went to bed. They had to stay up a long time, eyes burning from exhaustion, but they were determined to outlast their parents and get a cookie. Since Xoie's room was closer to their parent's room, she was the one who was responsible for deciding when to go to the kitchen.

Xoie waited until she heard the soft snore of her parents and crept down the hall, and knocked once on Beau's door. His door creaked open, and he stood in the doorway, rubbing his eye with a free hand. The other was clutching Clyde to his chest like a rag doll. Xoie nodded to him once, and he followed her into the kitchen to get one of the yummy cookies. There, perched on the counter, was a tiny mouse, rubbing his tiny paws together triumphantly. He had managed to procure himself one of the golden discs and was ready to bite into it when Xoie's startled gasp tore him from his prize.

She didn't scream, in fact, her reaction was just the opposite. Her eyes lit up and she raced toward the little mouse, who despite being tiny in comparison to this wide-eyed child, didn't scamper away. He was determined to eat the cookie, but also found himself intrigued by this tiny person who didn't try to bludgeon him to death with whatever was handy. She approached him, holding out her hand, telling him in hushed tones that she wouldn't hurt him.

He considered this for a moment, taking that time to size her up, and in deciding that she was harmless he cautiously crept into the small girl's palm and even let her stroke his shiny fur with one steady finger. He watched another child, a boy, more carefully, but relaxed when he came over and gently stroked his fur. A grin crept onto the girl's face and she whispered that she was going to call him Meepers, and take care of him forever.

Suddenly he was beside himself with joy. A person who didn't want to kill him AND she wanted to be his friend! He hopped from her hand and back onto the counter, gesturing toward the cookie. Xoie grabbed for it, and following Meepers' hand motions, tore the cookie in half, handed one half to her brother, then broke her piece in half and gave it to Meepers. They all ate the cookie in silence, and one by one, snuck back into their bedrooms to await the next morning.

Xoie made Meepers a little bed out of her pink frilly socks and piled them on her nightstand. She tucked Meepers in, jumped into her own bed, and as she drifted off to sleep, whispered that she loved him.
