Pholiota squarrosa, commonly known as the shaggy scalycap, the shaggy Pholiota, or the scaly Pholiota, is a species of mushroom in the Strophariaceae family. Common in North America and Europe, it is often an opportunistic parasite, and has a wide range of hosts among deciduous trees, although it can also infect conifers. It can also live as a saprobe, deriving nutrients from decomposing wood. The mushroom is typically found growing in clusters at the base of trees and stumps. It is considered poisonous.

Pholiota started her life a normal Kora, obsessed with lounging in the sun and grooming. Typical. One day she decided to wander out in search of the perfect sunning spot and found a beautiful glade filled with verdant life and birdsong. A perfect napping place! After a quick sip from the spring in the center of the glade she settled for a nap in the afternoon sun next to an old stump. Her dreams were strange, filled with spreading Mycelia, unfurling caps, and an explosion of spores. The sensation was peculiar enough to wake her from her slumber. Pholiota looked at herself and was filled with wonder and horror, her fur had turned a brilliant green and was covered in mushrooms. Unable to move, her body was fixed to the ground with tiny threads that she could feel burrowed deep into the ground giving her nutrients. Slowly the realization crept over her, in her sleep she had turned from animal to fungus and was in the fruiting stage, as soon as she spoored her body would die and the silvery threads that fed on the death of the stump she slept near would keep her spirit alive until the next fruiting. She hoped it would be a rainy summer.
