In 1901, Queen Victoria died, and Abigail then only nine, mourned her passing as did all the other aristocratic families. She was much too young to understand death, but it would visit her again in adulthood. When she was 20, she fell in love with a duke's son. He was charming, suave, sophisticated, and handsome to boot. They married mere months after meeting, and at 21 she had her first child and then, in 1914, the Great War happened. Her husband expressed an interest in joining the fight, and though she feared he would die, she let him. She knew her efforts to dissuade him would be of no use in the long run, and that he was determined to participate in the war.

Still, prior to him going off to war she had given birth to a son, earlier in 1913, and she feared her son would not grow up to have a father. Sadly, her biggest fear came true. Shortly, before World War I's end in 1917, her husband was killed in the war. She had been married for only a short time when her husband went off to war and he was already gone. Her son would never grow up knowing his father, having had only a vague recollection of him prior to his death, but she vowed that his father's memory would live on and she would make an effort to have her son know the man his father was because he had been a fine man indeed.

Still, while time heals all wounds, she never did re-marry. Her parents expected her to and certainly encouraged her to, but she never quite felt the same way about another man ever again.
