Malcolm Cobalt had always lived simply, just as his parents had taught him. He had no choice, really - because both of his parents were uneducated and came from poor backgrounds, he, too, never had privileges of any sort, and lived off of very little food and money for most of his life. Almost of his family's money went into repairing his father's old biplane, which was used in a cargo transport service as their only source of income. Though his father often cursed himself for "only being able to fly a darned plane", Malcolm became fascinated with the contraption when he was a boy, and he spent much of his free time dreaming about the skies. He knew deep within his heart that, if he worked hard, he would one day be able to master the air too, just like his old man.

Despite the many jeers and insults he received by other adolescents his age (for his accent and lack of education among other things), he quickly grew into a compassionate, gentle young man, driven by his determination to reach the skies and the love that bonded his family together so strongly. A pacifist first and foremost, he always managed to stay calm when attacked verbally or physically, and he was never tempted by the more devious side of life (like many others his age). When he finally reached his goal of becoming a pilot at the age of 16, he was friendless, always hungry, and had just lost his mother to illness - yet somehow, he still felt freer than ever. He managed to aid his aging father by taking over his cargo shipment service, and spent much of his time traveling the northern parts of his country while on the job. It was a simple life, living on the outskirts of a poor fishing town with no one but his father for support, but it was the only life he had known, and he promised himself he would make the most of it.

Unfortunately, Malcolm's life was abruptly shaken by the sudden onslaught of war, and he soon found himself alone; though his father was officially drafted into the military to support the war effort, he simply disappeared one fateful night, leaving Malcolm to ponder what had happened to him. Never one to simply ignore his curious side, Malcolm eventually decided to let go of his laid-back lifestyle, and he set off with his most prized belongings and his father's biplane to the mainland of his country. Though he later crashed the plane and lost most of his supplies, he still held onto the hope that he'd one day see his father again. Thanks to the goodwill of citizens whom had also lost family members to the draft and sympathized with his story, Malcolm was able to make his way all the way to the southern capitol and farther. Here, he met Junielle, his first true friend, as well as Aran and Luka - all of whom shared a similar dream of reuniting with lost family members. Grateful for their companionship, Malcolm put his friends' needs before himself and vowed to help them in any way he could. Some believe he currently still travels with them, while others believe he joined an anti-government movement in an attempt to overthrow the totalitarian regime that took his father and his friends' families away... Still others believe that he does a mixture of both. It's hard to say, but almost all can agree on one thing:

He'll find his father one day, but for now... his friends need him.
