I opened my eyes. I could see the key resting above my nose, slowly turning as it ticked down to the time of my death. I attempted to turn my head; the metal plates that made up my spine clicked as they rotated. I took a short step forward. My metallic feet wobbled a bit, still unsure of themselves. This was the day of my birth.

---

I was a new model… the first model to which they had given a brain. They thought that I couldn't see them, that I didn't know who they were. But I do. I can think, and I can see.
Twitching on occasion, for my brain was not yet good at controlling my numerous limbs, I paced around my cage. The sound of my paws colliding with the floor was a metallic clank. It was infinite and it echoed throughout my prison. I could hear the machine next door purring as it rested in blissful ignorance. Agitated, the plates that made up my shoulders shivered and groaned as I sat, frustratedly, on the ground. Flicking my tail pointedly, I waited for the sound of footsteps approaching down the hallway. In the meantime I examined my cell. The bars were a blackened silver, bent and scraped in attempted escapes. Shards of metal littered the floor, and the walls were textured, grey cement, and the floor was a tainted metal. In short, it was an eyesore. The cell bars were interesting to examine, to imagine what creatures it had held in the past, but it was otherwise bland.
Exhaling steam from my nose, I tapped my tails on the ground. Clank, clank, clank, clank. And again. And again. For hours I sat there, listening to my time run out as my key turned and clicked. The time I waited seemed endless. Finally, my long, twitching ears picked up the vibration of footsteps approaching from down the hallway. I pointed my emotionless face in their direction. Blinking, I stepped up and looked down the hallway.
