She was the only daughter of a lighthouse keeper, kissed by the tempest where a mother’s lips should have been. He was a first mate, fit and true and worth every ounce of his salt.
The sea flowed in their veins, and so the sea brought them together, just as it ripped them apart on the back of the outgoing tide.
She promised to wait for him. She swore that the stars would fall into the waves and the land would crumble and be swallowed back into its watery abyss where it was birthed before her patience ran dry. When she closed her eyes she could still see his vessel, black as ink against the red sunrise, sailing further and further into the horizon until the waves had claimed everything but the memory of his face.
And so, true as the blue of sky and sea alike, she waited for him.
