What in the heavens was that delicious smell? Pitty Pat thought to herself as she sniffed at the air delicately. Oh! She knew that smell! It was tuna! But not just tuna. It was the really good kind with bits of carrots and celery mixed in. Excited, she turned her back on the curtain she was playing with and pranced through the Calico Rose's elegant little tea room and straight into the kitchen. Now, Pitty knew she wasn't really allowed in the kitchen, so she bolted under a cabinet. From her hiding spot, she watched the cook, who was a very kind young lady, preparing a pot of tea. Then she saw it - her prize!
A lovingly made tuna melt sat on the counter, waiting to be taken to whoever had ordered it out in the busy tea room. It was topped with fresh tomatoes, cheese and... was that bacon? Pitty licked her chops expectantly and wiggled her tail. Taking care to be silent and walk low to ground, the little tabby made her way across the room to the counter. She leaped for the counter, but was too late to realize there was something blocking her path. It was a little pink teapot, full of hot tea! Pitty let out a surprised meow and clung to the edge of the counter, knocking the teapot on the floor. She looked down at the steaming liquid on the floor, glad it hadn't dumped on her.
"No! Bad cat! Out, Pitty!" The cook cried, running to where Pitty was, but Pitty was NOT leaving without a bite of the tuna! ...Well, and maybe a smidge of bacon. Pitty dragged herself onto the counter and made a dash for the tuna melt, but she was too slow and the cook grabbed her and held her tight. Pitty tried to squirm her way through to no avail, and found herself tossed unceremoniously from the kitchen with the door shut tight behind her. She paced back and forth outside the door, her tail wagging in frustration. Then it hit her! The perfect plan!
Pitty wandered back into the tea room and sniffed the air. There it was! She walked toward where an old lady was sitting by herself in the corner, the little bell on her collar jingling merrily. Sure enough, the old lady was the one enjoying the delicious tuna melt. Pitty meowed, in what she was hoped was only the most endearing tone, and looked up at the old lady pleadingly.
"Oh hello there, Pitty Pat." The old lady said with a smile. She was one of the regulars and always shared her meals with Pitty. What luck! Pitty purred and jumped up in the old lady's lap. "Would you like some tuna, little one?" She asked, and offered Pitty her tea saucer with some of the tabby's coveted tuna on it. Yes please, I would! Pitty thought as she finally claimed her prize. ...And got a wonderful petting from her old lady friend.
