When the light casts a shadow it warps and stretches and twists shapes into more animated creatures and demons. When the light reaches into the shadowed corners, it illuminates the demons and turns them into an old robe, a toy clown and a houseplant. But there are places where even the light cannot change the shadows; there is a darkness so pure that nothing can penetrate.
When even the normal darkness casts a grayish light across the pitch, that is when you will find me. I am blacker than night, darker than pitch, purer than emptiness. I am the darkness of men's souls, the spark of emptiness in dying eyes, the lost hope in a starless night. Do you see me?
I am Pitch Dark. You will not see me if you look for me. The moment your eyes adjust, there is too much light for me and I must fade away into the darker recesses at the corner of your eye that you are too scared to look at. Sometimes you may see me move but the second you turn to look I have already gone.
There are many stories and legends and fables about me. Maybe I should tell you the truth about who I am.
Do you know the story of Mori and Nori? How the Dark Goddess Maleria so wanted a child that she cursed a human couple, the Ri's into bearing a daughter on her behalf?
How the Oracle had a vision predicting Maleria's plan and informed the Goddess Shinwa so that she could step in and stop the inevitable death of the human parents and the destruction of Subeta?
How the child, Mono Ri, was split by the magic of Shinwa and Maleria warring inside her and, at eighteen, she did in fact find that the evil side won the battle as the sun set and she killed her parents and Mori was born as herself, following the call of the Dark Goddess throughout the night and coming to the Darkside as the dawn came?
How the sun rose and Shinwa's magic fought hard, drawing strength from the dawn and, on realising what she had done, Nori left the Darkside and fled to Veta Lake where she and Mori now spend their own times gathering items to give them the strength to fight when they are weakest?
Have you heard the stories? Of course you have, every good subetan child knows the stories. And if you are not a good subetan child, well, at least you have an overview now hmm?
Well, where do I fit in hmm? My name, as I previously mentioned, is Pitch Dark. I am, was...no...I am the creation of the Dark Goddess Maleria. I am all that is tainted darkness of her soul. I am bound to her. She created me for the child that was not meant to be.
I suppose you could say that I was intended to be Mori's pet, a companion for when the Dark Goddess was too busy fighting Shinwa to be able to spend time with her daughter. But I am more than a pet.
I have the strength of a hundred men, the intelligence of a super computer and the power to tear through the fabric of time and space.
No, wait, that's not quite true...
I have the strength of a hundred year old man, the intelligence of a super computer that has been attacked by a hammer and the ability to tear through fabric if someone cuts it with scissors first...
But it is not my strength or intelligence or power that I was created for. Thankfully. I was created to be able to hunt for the most precious source of the Dark Goddess' power. I can sense Dark Matter within a mile.
Actually, it's more than that. See, Dark Matter, before it is harvested, is basically like smoke. It does not glow purple, it has no real solid form. It is a grey fog-like substance that people mostly ignore. But not me. Have you noticed that my eyes glow purple? My Mistress didn't notice so I wouldn't be too surprised if you didn't either.
When Maleria created me she actually re-created a long-dead species of creature known as "Villeins". We are the source of Dark Matter as you know it. We have a unique lung structure that allows us to inhale the grey fog of Baryonic gas, the original structure of Dark Matter. We are then able to pass it through our blood system as a form of filtration and pass it out of a special secretion sac in our wrists. It exits as a pure form of the Baryonic gas and combines with the Oxygen in the air to create crystals of Dark Matter. It is the Baryonic Oxide crystallised compound that becomes the Dark Matter you know - a semi-organic compound that is entirely unstable and works as a source of energy for Dark Goddesses apparently...
After the Dark Goddess had her daughter taken from her by...well...technically...by her daughter...she became angrier, crueller, more twisted and depraved. I was a constant reminder of what could have been. I bore the brunt of her wrath. Maleria had been weakened after her war with Shinwa and needed me to almost constantly seek out Dark Matter. It was never enough. Never enough.
Her violent spells became worse as I continued to help her build her strength. And then one day I came to a realization. If she couldn't build her strength, she couldn't attack me. It started with only tracking every other day...but she learned to kick and punch me as her power ran dry.
Eventually, when the violence got to be too much, I ran away. And she found me. Time and again. I ran, she hunted, I got punished. I started storing the Dark Matter anywhere I could, collecting it in any vessel I could. I poured it into plushies, beanbags, potions, clothing...anything I could hide away in the caves where the Baryonic Gas is found.
One day, I ran away and refused to stop running. I ran and hid and dodged through caves and mountains and forests, hiding whenever I sensed her close. She followed me for days, weeks, months...time was lost to me.
I learned to sink into the shadows, become less than them, a darkness only seen from the corner of your eye. I learned to be invisible. Only when no moon casts a shadow can my movement be seen. My eyes still glow then.
Maleria continues to search for me but is too weak without someone to harvest the Dark Matter any more. That's why I keep my treasures here.
Hopefully she will never be strong enough to find me as long as I keep collecting and hiding all of the Dark Matter...
