Life Excerpt
Leaning, leisurely, against a wall he was watching people disembarking a big ship in the harbor. Judging by the sails, and the flag it was flying, it was an Alliance ship from the city of Stormwind. And most of the passengers seemed to be humans, although there were a few other races among them as well. He could see some dwarves and gnomes, as well as a couple of night elves. Then something caught his eye. He wasn’t sure if it had been the gleam of the armor in the sunlight, but there was a young man walking down the boarding plank. Something about him made Norvin keep following him with his gaze. He seemed…nervous? Unsure of himself? But like he was trying to act brave for the people around him. Norvin smiled, thinking to himself that he was going to extend a warm, and hearty, Kul Tiran welcome to this young man. It was quite clear that he’d never set foot in the city of Boralus before. He made his way over to where he knew that the passengers would be going to make their way off of the pier area, and into the main part of the big harbor. When he saw the young man make his way up the stairs Norvin stepped forward, with a big friendly smile on his face:
”Hello, and welcome to Boralus! The pearl of the Kul Tiran kingdom.” His rather booming voice seemed to have taken the young one by surprise, as he looked startled for a fraction of a second before composing himself again.
”Um, thank you…sir?” Norvin let out a hearty laugh, which was even boomier than his normal voice.
”No need to call me sir, friend.” That seemed to make the young man relax a little. “I’m just an old former pirate. Nothing special like that.” He winked at his new acquaintance. “The name’s Norvin, by the way. Norvin Atherton. At your service.” He did an overly formal bow, before standing up straight again. To his delight he saw that the young man was smiling at his theatrics.
”I’m Keyon. Keyon Sherman.” He put his hand out towards Norvin, for a handshake. The old rogue chuckled before accepting the handshake. He hadn’t really expected that as a response, but he definitely didn’t mind it. “But what exactly do you mean by being at my service?” Norvin smiled again.
”Well, you seem to be new to our lovely city, so I was simply offering to show you around the place. Make sure that you can find your way around, and all of that.” He gave Keyon another wink before adding. “Wouldn’t want a strapping young man like yourself wandering around all lost, now do we?” Keyon’s cheeks gained a bit more color after that remark, which Norvin saw as a small victory. He’d decided that he liked this young paladin. He felt like a fresh breeze in a place that was anything but fresh to himself at this point.
”I…um…thank you. I’d…appreciate that.”
They spent the rest of the day, and part of the evening, walking around the city. Norvin did most of the talking, as was often the case. But Keyon asked questions about the different places they visited as well. Especially when Norvin mentioned something historic that had happened at specific locations. Norvin also took any opportunity he could get to slip in little compliments here and there, as well as asking questions about Keyon, as a person.
The tour ended with them going back to the harbor, so that Keyon could get back to the inn where he’d gotten a room earlier that day, before the tour started.
If the conversation during the tour had been focused on Keyon (and the sites around the city), it was now more about Norvin. Although Keyon had countered some of Norvin’s questions about him with questions about Norvin’s own experiences, now that they were sitting down at a table, with ale and food, the young paladin seemed more emboldened and asked more questions than before.
”So, why’d you stop being a pirate?” Norvin raised a bushy blonde eyebrow at the question.
”Questioning my decision?” He chuckled as he could see that his counter question had left Keyon slightly baffled. He shrugged before continuing. “It got repetitive, I suppose. Felt like I needed some more excitement in my life.” He took a swig of his ale and wiped his mouth with the sleeve of his jacket. “Plus, it feels better to be helping people rather than just stealing from them. Makes it easier for me to sleep at night too.” He laughed. When he looked at Keyon he could see that he was smiling back at him, looking like he was proud of Norvin for having realized something like that.
”I agree. Knowing that you’ve managed to help another person is…inspiring. Not just to other people, but to yourself too. Inspires you to do more for others.” He looked down at his ale, with an almost shy smile on his face. “That’s why I…It’s the reason why I became a paladin. I felt a need to help people. Especially the less fortunate”
They decided to meet up the next day, so that Keyon could come along as Norvin headed out of the city to find people that needed help from adventurers like them. The two of them ended up traveling around the Kul Tiran islands for months. They even went to Zandalar on some covert SI:7 missions together as the Alliance and Horde war efforts progressed. All the while their friendship flourished and deepened.
