"God created Arrakis to train the faithful" - Maud'Dib

Throughout history, Arrakis has been a central component in the evolution of humans. The harsh and unforgiving environment pushes those brave enough to venture away from civilization to the brink of death. They are forced to leave their weakness behind, and the vacancy is filled with the strength of survival that will last them a lifetime. Emperors and tyrants have risen to power here, but not even a Kwisatz Haderach is a match for the true power on Arrakis.

Sandworms.

The Old Man of the Desert, the Maker, Shaitan, Shai-Hulud.

Responsible for the most coveted thing in the known universe, melange, or spice, these dangerous creatures have pushed humanity along, giving them an upper-hand against the evil thinking machines when they used spice to combat Erasmus' engineered plagues, when Norma Cenva used spice to awaken her latent regenerative and prescient abilities allowing her to create space-folding ships, until she was transformed into the Oracle of Time after laying the groundwork for the original Guild Navigators, and when Raquella Berto-Anirul and Mohandas Suk went their separate ways after discovered a legitimate cure for the plagues, and created the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood and the School of Suk Doctors respectively. For thousands of years since, noble houses have utilized the life-extending properties of spice to live and rule twice as long as an original human, which opened the doors for Arrakis, the only planet where spice can be found, to be horribly exploited, forcing the native people to become increasingly hostile and ruthless just to survive. These native people revere sandworms as gods, both respecting and fearing them. Over many generations, they have learned how to ride these behemoths across the treacherous desert. Just like Shai-Hulud, these native people have witnessed the change of humanity.

Self, you need to get off your butt and find that quote about dancing sandworms.

Paul Atreides was still just a teenage when his father was assassinated, leaving the entire household in upheaval and forcing Paul and his Bene Gesserit mother Lady Jessica to flee into the desert. A man intrusted to keep them safe, Duncan Idaho, was too drunk to properly do his job, and was killed by the enemy. They were saved by the mercy of the natives, Fremen, as they believed Paul was a vital piece in a very old prophecy. Lady Jessica was transformed into a Reverend Mother using a poison derived from sandworms, which also transformed her fetus into a pre-aware child, who would later become St. Alia of the Knife. Paul, pressure to prove that he was the prophesied Lisan al-Gaib and the Bene Gesserit's long-awaited Kwisatz Haderach, also took the poison known as the Water of Life. From the moment he survived, he was swept up into an unstoppable jihad in the name of Paul Maud'Dib Atreides, wrecking havoc across the universe. As a gift from one of the most mysterious planets, Tleilaxa, Maud'Dib received a genetic copy of the swordsmaster Duncan Idaho, though he retained none of his original memories. He was genetically programmed to kill his new master, the turmoil of fighting against his training or saving the man he swore loyalty to triggered his memories to come back, a brand new revelation for these genetic copies. Maud'Dib was supposed to be the "shortening of the way," the one who could see where the Bene Gesserits were not able, and he was, but the Golden Path he saw was not something he was strong enough to lead humanity down, and he saw his son being able to take over the sin and bloodshed that he was not ready for. After being blinded by an atomic weapon, Paul Maud'Dib wandered into the desert as a sacrifice to Shai-Hulud, as was the Fremen custom. His sister, Alia, took over the empire and religion, though her mental stability was questionable. Duncan Idaho was Alia's lover, and helped to anchor her, but that wasn't enough to keep her from diverting humanity from the Golden Path.

Get up and go find a quote about Leto II wearing sandtrout!

Leto II was responsible for taking over where Maud'Dib left off, but his sister Ghanima was an unexpected reward for their mother's sacrifice. Both had prescience, but only Leto could see what he had to do to continue the Golden Path. Leto had to merge with the sandtrout, the beginning stage of a sandworm. At this time a blind prophet emerged from the desert that many believed to be Maud'Dib still alive, as Shai-Hulud would never devour the man working on his behalf. He was later stabbed in the back at Alia's request, prompted by the voices of Other Memory in her head. When Leto's merge was complete, he returned to overthrow Alia with the help of his grandmother, the Lady Jessica, Ghanima, and Duncan Idaho.
For over 3,000 years he ruled, known as the Tyrant for his strict rule on all humankind, all in the name of peace. Leto terraformed Arrakis, killing all the sandworms with the water necessary for plant life. This was not a problem, as locked in his terrifying sandworm-human body were millions of sandtrout that would begin their long transformation into sandworms as soon as he died. Leto knew this, as he had seen his own death, which is why he merged with the "Little Makers" in the first place. Through his rule, Leto requested a never-ending supply of the Duncan-copies, many of which were programmed to kill him, but never succeeded. You see, Leto the Tyrant had a prescience stronger and more accurate than his father. Every choice he made was deliberate, no matter the cost in blood, because he could see past his won death, all the way to the prophesied Krazelic, or the End of Times, and his job was to prepare humanity for the most important battle they would ever face. During his rule, Leto confiscated the Bene Gesserit breeding records, the very thing that created the rogue Kwisatz Haderachs, and took over for himself. His new projects create humans that were genetic wildcards much like himself. In the end, Leto humanity as well as he could before Duncan Idaho, and the woman who was bred perfectly for him, Siona Atreides, ended his reign of terror. As Leto's grotesque worm-like body met the river below him, he melted into the sandtrout that would restore Arrakis, and each little organism carried a pearl of Leto's awareness, allowing him to live on in an unending dream.

You knew these books well, you can find a quote to go here.

After the Tyrant's rule was over, humanity spread far and wide before another ruler could rise to power over them. This movement was called the The Scattering. Despite the damage their influence had already had on mankind, the Bene Gesserits meddled again, this time with an unusual desert girl who could control the sandwroms. She was a decedent of Leto's breeding program, and the pearls of his awareness told the worms that she was not a threat. She could summon them with a dance, and the naturally territorial creatures would gather up and sway around her. After the Tyrant's rule, many people refereed to sandworms as Shaitan, a derogatory term relating them to demons. Like other well-known groups, Bene Gesserits just wanted as much control in a world spiraling into despair. Humanity needed a savior, so Sheeana, the little desert girl, was made into a vestal virgin-like goddess. At the same time, yet another Duncan Idaho was created and awakened by the the Bene Gesserit's own Bashar, Miles Teg. Miles was the son of a Bene Gesserit who quietly disobeyed her orders, and educated a man in their secret fighting ways. They never found out, but Miles always had to be careful around them.
Out of the shadows of The Scattering came an unstoppable new fighting force known as Honored Matres. Out on a mission, Miles and Duncan ran into them and were forced to separate to survive. An Honored Matre named Murbella attempted to sexually bond Duncan to her, but instead unleashed Duncan's own training in sexual warfare. Against their will, they were bonded together, and Murbella was taken prisoner, later to be educating in the Bene Gesserit ways. Miles was taking captive by the Honored Matres, and when they tried to tap his brain for information, they unleashed his unknown secret weapon, a hyperspeed mode that allowed him to move through Honored Matre crowds, leaving broken bodies in his wake. His body still had limits, and it took the equivalent of a family feast to sate his hunger. Carefully, Duncan, Murbella and Miles found their way back to the Bene Gesserits. Duncan and Murbella continued to have unwanted though not unpleasant sexual collisions, while the goddess Sheeana, now a Reverend Mother, felt a need to disappear into the universe.
Honored Matres had taken over Arrakis. Bene Gesserits began to gather sandworms to transfer to other planets, including their base planet. Out of spite, the Honored Matres used atomics on Arrakis, destroying the planet and assumably everything living on it. Miles was killed in the event, but never fear, humanity has mastered the technique of regrowing anyone they need just from skin cells. In an ironic twist, Duncan was in charge of teaching the man who had been his mentor in his most recent life. Along with the turmoil between Honored Matres and Bene Gesserits, another Enemy was lurking in the background, slowing killing entire populations with unstoppable plagues.
