It felt as if the apples were burning holes in his pockets. He knew it was wrong to steal but what choice did he have? He had to eat, and since he didn't have any family he didn't have anyone to provide food for him.
As he rounded a corner he chanced a glance behind him. He could see them way over there, looking around for him. They sure were chasing him a long way for a few apples. There was a couple of old crates in front of him in the alley so he got behind them, leaned against the wall and sank down to the ground. He was exhausted. Raised voices were heard from the street he'd just been on. The people chasing him hurried past the alley and Sahl let out a sigh of relief. Finally rid of them. As he pulled out one of the apples and was about to take a bite there was a sudden noise close by. It was unmistakable. Definitely a whip. Someone had just been whipped in his vicinity. The very thought sent shivers down his spine. Sahl looked around. At first he didn't see where the sound could have come from, but then he saw a barred basement window out of the corner of his eye. That must have been it.
Putting the apple away he snuck over to the window. Just as he laid down on the sandy ground and looked through the window he saw a door being closed and he heard a key being turned. Checking the room his eyes stopped on a shaking young man laying on the floor. He was shaking and whimpering. Arms and legs were chained to the floor. And he was covered in bruises and bloody cuts from the whip. But the worst part was how skinny he was. Sahl wasn't much better but at least his ribs didn't show. Sahl crept closer to the window.
-"Pst! Hey, you. Up here, by the window..." He kept his voice as low as he could while still making sure the young man could hear him. The whimpering stopped and the guy slowly looked up at him. It was obvious that he'd been crying but Sahl thought it best to ignore that and act as if he hadn't noticed. "You hungry?" The young man's eyes opened wide and he nodded eagerly.
-"Y-yes!" He realized that he'd said it unnecessarily loud and covered his mouth with his hands. Sahl chuckled a little. Then he got one of the apples from his pockets and reached in through the bars.
-"Here you go." The guy carefully got up and got over to the window. He grabbed the apple and started eating it immediately. "Take it easy there. Don't want to choke on it, do you?" Sahl smiled sheepishly at his new friend. "Hehe, I don't even know your name..."
-"I...I'm Esho." As Esho continued to eat his apple Sahl looked at the metal bars in the window. He got up and looked around for something he could use. After settling for a small rock he got back down on his stomach and started hacking away at the sandstone wall around one of the bars. There was a sudden noise of chains rattling that made him look up. His eyes met the tear filled eyes of Esho.
-"Um...What's wrong?" Esho wiped his eyes with his dirty vest.
-"I...I thought you left. That I...that I wouldn't see you again..."
-"Oh...Well, I didn't. And I won't. Oh, and my name's Sahl by the way." Esho smiled at him.
-"Hello, Sahl." Sahl smiled back at him before starting to chip away at the window again.
-"What are you doing?" Without looking up Sahl replied.
-"I'm going to get you out of there."
-"Why?" This response shocked him and Sahl had to stop to look at Esho.
-"Why? Why would I just leave you like this?"
-"But it has nothing to do with you. So, why help me?"
-"I've seen you now. I couldn't just go on with my life knowing that I could've helped, but didn't."
Sahl kept at it for an hour or two, then he had to leave because Esho's owner had come back. Before he left he promised to return the next day. And he did. Five days in a row he came back. Always with some form of food and always chipping away at the window.
On the fifth day he got there a little earlier than normal and what he saw only fueled his determination to free Esho even more.
His new friend was being assaulted right in front of him. And he realized that this was what had been going on the entire time. He just hadn't acknowledged it. Or maybe he'd subconsciously chosen not to see it. Either way it had to stop.
Silently he removed the metal bars from the window, cursing himself for not daring to free Esho the night before. Then he slipped in through the window and arming himself with his makeshift knife he moved closer to the revolting man violating Esho. The knife had served him well in chipping away at the window and now it was time for it to serve another, more sinister purpose.
He stopped right behind the man and right as Esho let out a painful sound Sahl reached around and started stabbing the man's throat repeatedly. He didn't stop until the man had stopped moving. Then he let him go, letting him fall over to the side. Sahl's focus was on Esho. He unlocked the chains with a key from the dead man and then helped him get dressed.
After getting out of that horrible basement they started heading towards Sahl's home. It was just a shack built out of junk on top of another building, but it was his. Now it would be theirs.
