Hated. And for what reason? All I ever did was help. I'm a scientist and doctor, studying nature and anatomy, mixing herbs and treating wounds. Yet I'm hated. Loathed by the ones I help. Accused of witchcraft and sorcery. The people keep their distance - unless of course, they need my... assistance.

When they need me they come calling, "Lyra, Lyra dear, can you help an unfortunate soul?" Or my personal favorite, "Are you sure this isn't poison? This isn't going to kill me is it?" I suppose I can not complain at times like that, as in those moments they aren't trying to banish me. Thankfully in times of need I have my faithful bloodhound Delilah for protection. She has three times more skin than she needs, so it folds and droops. Her ears hang halfway to her paws which makes her good for tracking lost children, but her sharp teeth make her a great guardian. Delilah is usually just a big softy that drools everywhere.

Today will be my last day. I have been tried, found guilty of witchcraft, and now I shall be executed. At sundown I will be tied to a stake and burned alive. I have dedicated my whole life to these people who scorn me. I have toiled, studied, and experimented for their benefit. It is I that treated them for various ailments and provided them with herbs when they could not sleep, yet now I pay with my life.

Perhaps it is I who is the fool. I thought they would give me their gratitude and I thought they would understand the science. Yet, it seems as though I am the one who has been bewitched by them.

They will soon come for me. My mind is swirling in torment with the events to come. My body is tense as I imagine the fierce lick of flames against my skin. My stomach turns with the change in breeze as my nose detects the smell of smoke on the wind. I am going to die today.
