Under construction. Story staying the same, just getting new profile.

Thank you, Rasputina! Omg, you're the best.

Starvation has a name.

Where I come from, everybody knows it. You see, for whatever reason, my ancestors signed this treaty that promised him complete power over us. Now he whips at our stomachs until they relent and roar, digs deep craters in the sky so that the sun stays low but the moon high. Nothing but snow fills our mouths.

Still, Starvation has a lofty, looming name, but it hasn't completely shaded the joys of life.

On occasion, I see a certain snake of light slithering over the horizon, twisting, flaunting her scales of many colors. Her name is Aurora. Well, that's what my uncle calls her anyway. He couldn't bear to watch her travel across the sky so gracefully and silently without any sense of identity. According to him, she belongs to a great Charmer, the one who taught the stars to chirp and the sun to bare its yellow teeth.

They weren't born with names either.

I asked my uncle why he didn't name them too then. He said the stars are too hard to name since they breed so fast; the sun, despite its strutting light, is too humble to hold up a hefty title, too shy to show it without ducking behind a cloud.

Starvation is always present. The Charmer actually remembered to give him a name, and he won't put it down. My uncle tells me not to be too disgusted by this. He probably got a name just because the Charmer wanted to keep him quiet. It isn't working. He twists and struts, almost like Aurora, but without any beauty or humility. He doesn't even shed any light. We'd be less lost following just one reluctant star.

Either way, Starvation has a name but still isn't tame.

I wonder how long ago the Charmer had given up on him.

---

I waltzed with Ganymede,
I took his heavy arm, tossed it over my head.
I waltzed with Ganymede about the shores of Jupiter
while the other moons tugged at their gravities,
anxiously.

And they heaved their sighs, and lifted the tides
of a river oblivious to the weight of the world.
I waltzed with Ganymede, I waltzed with Ganymede,
and no devious moon man crossed his face.

--Venus of Ganymede, a beat poet.

Aurora looked cold last night. I offered to wrap her up in my fleece blanket, but she declined. Or at least it seemed that was what she did--the way she silently swayed her lithe, green body this way and that. Aurora also looked lonely, and I thought this: of course she is lonely! How would you like to have one side of your soul on display for a whole judgmental world to see, while the other half is beyond the stars and the snow, writhing at the feet of the Charmer?

I wouldn't like that at all.

So I sang to her. And my voice flitted across the tundra like a wispy moth. The moth seemed to dance up to Aurora, as if captivated by her beauty, as if moved by my song.

I sang louder.

The moth didn't survive past the first chorus. Aurora turned a paler green and spread herself out more comfortably among the stars, as if yawning. I think she was dreaming.

I didn't know I was such a good Charmer.
