How long had it been? How long since the happy smiling people had gone away and left him to the dust and darkness? There had been a time when he had been cherished, he knew that. Or did he? How many cheery nights around the lady's shoulders had been real? How many glad days had been reality, and not the dream under the needle? There was no way to be certain. He had found a sequin, some time ago, and he had tried to ask it, but it just glittered and offered no answer. Nevertheless, he kept it, in the hope that someday it might work up the courage to speak to him. One day, someone might find him, but would they know any more than he?
