I moved out of my parents' house in August of 2016. They had been gracious enough to allow my husband and I to stay with them once he was medically discharged from the military, so we worked hard to get on our feet and get out of their hair. It was my first apartment and I was quite excited. But I did notice that a home without a pet was kind of... Quiet. Unsettling. Boring? I had grown up in a home where there was always at least one dog; when I moved out, I left behind three fur-siblings. So it didn't take long before I was interested in getting a pet, despite the hefty pet deposit fee the apartment charged per animal.

In October of 2016, my husband and I went to the local pet shelter. We browsed the dogs, mildly interested in a couple, before deciding to look at the cats. I had always wanted a cat growing up, but Mom and Pops were dog people. This was my chance! There were tons of little black kittens up for adoption, though they were not yet old enough to take home. My husband and I decided that they would have a better chance at getting adopted than some of the older cats, so we looked for an elder. The first cat we looked at seemed quite lethargic until it was pulled from the cage, where it bit my husband and darted for freedom. It didn't get far until the workers caught it and put him back in his cage. My husband took note of two cats that were fighting each other. One was huge, fluffy, and everything I ever wanted! The other was skin and bones, balding in places, and seemed to be the aggressor. She was a tiny Siamese cat with a crooked tail (would later curl). And the moment she noticed me staring at her through the glass, she stopped attacking the other cat and watched me.

I was intrigued by this malnourished soul. I asked if we could play with her for a few minutes and the people seemed a little hesitant. They said she was skittish and would probably do exactly what the first cat had done. I insisted. So they pulled her from the cage and placed her on the table, where she came straight up to me and requested pettings with the most pitiful meow I have ever heard. Seriously, she sounded like a chain smoker. But after ten minutes of playing with her, I decided I wanted her. As I filled out the adoption paperwork, I was informed I wouldn't be able to take her home until she was fixed. I would have to wait a day. That was fine. I was also informed that she had been seized by the police off a porch she was tied to during an animal cruelty investigation. That explained her poor stature and size, especially since they told me she was about 5 years old. We were reminded of an anime character from a show we had recently watched, and decided to name her 'Yuno'.

The next day we picked her up. She was loopy from the procedure, but good outside of that. They gave me some food and treats and told me I had x amount of hours to take her to the vet, as per my adoption contract. That was fine. We took her home and introduced her to our tiny apartment, showed her where the kitty box would be and where her new scratching post was. The first day was probably the hardest for her, for she hid behind the toilet and never came out, even for water. I ended up moving her food and water right next to the toilet bowl, a little sad that she slunk back as far as she could when I got near. But I get it. Humans had not been kind to her, she was wary. She just looked so uncomfortable trying to cram her cone-head into the wall.

The next day would come, I would have to force her into her cat carrier, and to the vet we went. The vet prescribed some antibiotics for a small infection she had, gave me a game plan for putting some weight on her, and told me she was actually less than a year old. Which was unfortunate, given my goal of adopting an older cat. We went home and she went back behind the toilet. I spent hours sitting next to the tub, reading a book and just waiting. I didn't think at the time it would take days. After a few days, I started bringing this little mouse toy with me when I sat near her. She was starting to get curious and would pat at the little thing. It didn't do anything fancy, no squeaks or bells, but it ended up being her favorite toy. Soon, she would play with it while I sat near her, though she would retreat if I moved too fast.

Eventually, she started venturing out, mostly when she thought no one was home. It was the fourth day when I could touch her. My husband and I joked that her friendly demeanor at the pound was her way of putting up a front to get out of that place. But we would soon find out that she was actually really friendly. After the first week, she started following me around. If I turned too quickly, she would dart away and retreat to the bathroom. But it only took a few minutes for her to come out and start tailing me again... In fact, the only time she spent a lot of time under the toilet was the first (and only) time I gave her a bath. She reeked of the shelter and her stitches had finally healed, so it was time to make her smell bearable. She hated me for a solid few hours, but eventually got over it.

After two weeks, she started sleeping with us. She would curl up between me and my husband, or on my husband's lap, and snooze the night away. It was so adorable! She was starting to put on weight and her meow was getting stronger. Her second vet checkup had much more positive vibes. It really seemed like everything was getting better. The vet told us that we really did give this kitten a reason to live.

Fast forward to the present. As I type her story, Yuno is in my lap giving herself a bath. Her favorite mouse is ugly and torn up, but she refuses to play with any other mouse toys. If I get up, she follows. When I leave for work or school everyday, she walks me to the door. She also greets me when I return with an excited meow. She prefers to sleep on Daddy (since I move a lot when I sleep), prefers to attack Daddy's legs when he walks by, and spends most of her days either on the balcony or on top of the couch. She's perfectly healthy now, and really fluffing out. It's been so interesting to watch her grow, not only in size but in character. I am looking forward to watching my baby grow old with me and am grateful for the company she offers. Yuno seriously enhanced my life.

Oh, and if you ever get the chance to buy Catnip Bubbles (they're like a dollar at Walmart) to play with your cat, do it. Just trust me.
