The Fire-Type Pokemon

Dazed and exhausted, the Flaafy falls over in defeat with a Croconaw standing before it. Quilava is proud of his friend’s victory. It wasn’t an easy battle. Normally an electric-type Pokemon would trump a water-type, but Croconaw’s strength and training put him on top. The three friends and Pokemon trainers cheer over the Pokemon’s victory, but something makes everyone quiet.

Croconaw begins to glow. The shape of him changes and grows larger. Upon completion, he stops glowing. Croconaw has just evolved into his final form: a Feraligatr. Again, the three trainers cheer and run over to greet the newly-evolved Pokemon.

Quilava sighs and does not go forward to congratulate his friend. Of course he is happy for his friend, but a part of him feels jealous. Bayleef, the third trainer’s Pokemon, had just evolved into a Meganium a week ago. That makes Quilava the last of the trio to not evolve into his final, true form. It is embarrassing; shouldn’t he have a similar amount of experience as his friends? Why hasn’t he evolved into a Typhlosion yet?

He watches his trainer smile and pet Feraligatr and begins to zone out. He remembers the day she first held his pokeball. Her and her two friends just became old enough to become the very best Pokemon trainers themselves. His trainer had chose his Pokeball due to her love of fire-type Pokemon. The look on her face when she first released him from his Pokeball, then just a Cyndaquil, is something he will always cherish and remember. It is an honor to be a trainer’s first Pokemon. The two of them are together from the very beginning and have the greatest bond. Evolving into a Quilava was not only a highlight for himself, but for his trainer as well. Imagine how she will feel when he becomes a Typhlosion. But honestly, Quilava only wants to become a Typhlosion for her. He enjoyed being a Cyndaquil, but loves being a Quilava. But what he wants does not matter to him. His only goal is to make his trainer happy. For a trainer’s starter Pokemon to evolve into its final form much be a huge accomplishment and honor. He must train harder to make her proud.

While deep in thought, Quilava almost does not realize that his trainer is walking towards him. He snaps out of his trance and forces a smile to her. She kneels down and looks at the two newly evolved Pokemon behind her. When she looks back at her Pokemon, she scratches her Quilava under the chin and smiles. “Don’t be jealous of them, Quilava. The three of you have been working hard. They both evolved within this past week and you won’t be long behind them. Perhaps you’ll evolve next week, perhaps after your next battle.”

Quilava nods in agreement. He has been training just as hard as his friends. It shouldn’t be too much longer until he evolved as well!

Her smile fades away. “But that’s not what you really want, is it?” Quilava tilts his head to the side in bafflement. He watches as she reaches into her backpack and pull out a smooth stone. “This is an Everstone. Even when you gain enough experience to evolve, this stone will prevent you from doing so. You’ll still continue to learn powerful attacks as a Typhlosion, but you’ll remain the cute, adorable Quilava that you are now.” Quilava gives his trainer a quizzical look. “I know you enjoy being a Quilava. I have noticed how your personality has changed once you evolved into one, and I love that you’re happy. I don’t want you to do anything you don’t want to do. I saved up and bought one of these so that you don’t have to evolve. But it is completely your decision. Do you want to remain a Quilava, or evolve into a Typhlosion?”

Quilava is shocked. The gift of this Everstone has totally caught him off guard. She truly knows him so well and wants him to be happy as well. He answers her by nudging the Everstone and she laughs. “Well this is money well spent. I was hoping this would be your answer.” To finalize the answer, she gives him the Everstone.

He will continue to grow as strong as Meganium and Feraligatr, but forever remain a Quilava. That is the best wish he could ever ask for.
