Overcast skies shrouded the rocky hills and green pastures in a usual gloom. An eagle soared below the clouds, its shadow passing over a white wolf standing on the jagged rocks overlooking the stretch of grassy land, the wolf's serious brown eyes flooded with thought.
Behind him, a male voice carried in the cold wind. "Kiba," A gray wolf of similar stature padded up next to him, yellow eyes looking for what the white wolf could have been staring at. "I thought you'd be up here," the gray wolf said softly without looking away.
"Yeah," The white wolf looked to the sky as small snow flakes began to drift to earth.
"Is it bothering you again?"
Before he could respond a familiar howl pierced the silence, and both wolves headed back to the main territory.
A muscular, stocky white dog with docked ears and ticked with grayish scars rested in the shade of a shoddy aluminum shed, tied to a slack heavy chain, his dark eyes flecked with defeat. His strong face and broad chest were stained reddish pink against his pale fur.
The dog raised his heavy head and squinted across the hot blacktop concrete to the other side of the surrounding privacy fence as a man entered the enclosure, a young dog tethered at his side, trembling under its thin brindle coat.
