Valerie had been collecting candles for many years. It had started with a gift at Christmas, a simple box of scented candles. It escalated from there, to quite the impressive collection of today. Valerie's husband Lewis had given her her favourite - a beeswax candle purchased from a gift shop in a beautiful cathedral in Florence. It always had pride of place on the shelf above her inglenook fireplace. It was never lit - Lewis had passed away shortly after their trip to Florence, and Valerie wanted to keep that candle as a memory of their last holiday together. Lewis had told her it was sacred, because of the location he bought it from.
Valerie's daughter Juliet had told her the exciting news that she was having a baby. It carried mixed emotions, as the baby would never know it's grandfather. Juliet had promised her mother she would tell her baby all about him, so she would know what a great man he was. The birth was now imminent, and on February 24th, 2004 - Steven was born. Valerie received a phone call from Juliet's husband at 4pm, to inform her that the baby was being born at home, unexpectedly. Quickly grabbing her purse, and keys, turning off all the lights at home, Valerie drove to see the new baby.
After spending several hours with Juliet and the new arrival, Valerie drove home. She parked the car in the garage and went inside the house. Switching the hallway light on, she noticed a faint glow coming from the living room. Curious, she went to investigate. As she entered the room, she was immediately drawn to the fireplace. There, on the shelf, was her beeswax candle. It was alight, glowing and flickering gently.
Valerie stood there, transfixed by the peculiar event. She then sat on the couch, and realised the significance of the lit candle. Her eyes filled with tears, she whispered - 'Yes, Lewis. The candle is sacred, as is the new life that entered our family today. I miss you.' Valerie was unsure whether to blow the candle out, as she did not want to lose the precious gift. But in her heart, she knew she had to let it burn, and she sat and watched it flicker.
And rejoiced.
