The science fair was something neither universally loathed nor adored by the members of the Scientific Enthusiasts’ Circle. Although they were undeniably passionate about science and scientific endeavors, most of the club thought the annual fair was a waste of funds, time, and effort. Still, it was diverting, and it fit in nicely with their mission statement, and there were six or so members devoted to it whatever the time of year. Naturally, the science fair appealed to many different rotaries and clubs in the town, and the schools all sponsored the event and offered extra credit for students who participated. On the eve of the fair, the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Rotary Club locked themselves in the town hall to decorate and set up the tables, and on the night of the fair, most of the town arrived in just short of their Sunday best.
An hour into the proceedings, just before everyone would be asked to enjoy refreshments in the courtyard while the judges made their rounds, Aeroga finally worked up the nerve to slip into the cafeteria and have a look at what everyone had created. There were miniature rockets, miniature airplanes, chemistry sets that looked like they belonged to Sherlock Holmes, and 3D clay models of cells. Some people had looked at bread mold, and others had checked the amount of bacteria on several everyday surfaces. The entire town hall had transformed from a dull, muddy-bricked assembly room to a colorful, crepe streamered festival with music, drinks, and scientific demonstrations.
And as the President of the Scientific Enthusiasts’ Circle asked everyone to please proceed to the courtyard, Aeroga smelled something she had come to loathe. It was a pungent smell, bitter, acrid, and sharp. It was the smell of smoke. And as she turned to look, others noticed, too.The fire on her tail, which she thought she had been very careful to keep well away from anything flammable, had set a crepe paper streamer alight. In seconds, flames had eaten up the streamer to the ceiling, and then, having melted away the tape, the flaming streamer fell from the ceiling. It seemed to take a thousand years for the streamer to swing to the center of the hall and brush fire across three rows of display tables. Within minutes, most of the displays were burning, posters were curling, and chemicals were reacting.
A week after the incident, Aeroga had yet to leave her house, and she heard a determined knocking on her kitchen door.
When she ignored it, the knocking became thumping.
When she ignored that, the noise went away so completely that it was several minutes before she heard the faint, metallic scratching of the lock being picked. Aeroga crept to the door to open it and suprise the picker, but before she got to the door, it burst open. Grey-furred Mrs Macready bullied her way into the kitchen with a casserole in hand.
“You can’t stay in here,” she said with a haughty sniff. “Your fur will turn all sickly and pale.”
“But ... I ..." Aeroga stammered.
“But nothing. You need to go outside and take a walk.” Then, Mrs Macready sniffed again, as if to emphasize her point, but she caught a whiff of something that made her wrinkle her nose in distate. “Is something in the oven, dear?”
“No,” Aeroga answered, glancing toward it. She didn’t remember putting anything in the oven.
“It smells like you’ve let something burn.” Mrs Macready pushed her way into the middle of the kitchen, and there was no way Aeroga could head her off. Within a few seconds, she strode into the den, and she turned back only to scowl at Aeroga. “It smells like smoke in here. You should light some candles.”
“I don’t have any candles.”
“Don’t have candles,” Mrs Macready muttered. “Wait here.”
Then she bustled out through the kitchen door, and less than five minutes later she came back with the remains of a votive in a small jar. There was a strange glint in her eye, and Aeroga trailed her cautiously. She ventured, “It looks pretty.”
“It smells pretty,” said Mrs Macready, with an air of finality. “Give me your tail.”
And without waiting for her to move, she snatched Aeroga’s tail and held it close to the wick of the candle. It curled a little in protest, but a small blue flame bled onto it. While Aeroga all but gaped at her, Mrs Macready put the candle on the center of the coffee table. “There.”
On her way out, again through the kitchen, Mrs Macready warned Aeroga not to let the casserole get cold. Aeroga didn’t quite hear her. She stared at the little candle burning calmly in place, and a little of the tension in her shoulders from making herself small and unobtrusive drifted away. A warm spot spread through her chest as she realized that she had lit the candle and that no one was coming running with a bucket of water. There was no need to call the fire brigade.
And some few hours later, the little flame drowned in the melted wax. She could have cried. But instead, she bit her lip in determination and marched to Mrs Macready’s. Mrs Macready opened the door, peering at her curiously. “What is it?”
“The candle went out.”
Mrs Macready smiled, but she sent her home to bed. “I’ll take you to the craft store tomorrow.”
Aeroga stood over the stove, her tail swishing nervously behind her. The chunk of wax in the melting pot was melting about as fast as grass grows, and she just wanted to start now. Her paws felt itchy with the need to do something, and Mrs Macready’s idea for actually making candles had taken hold in her. She wanted to create, and she wasn’t interested in waiting around for the wax to melt.
Instead, she went to mix the perfume oils Mrs Macready had bought, and by the time she’d made something spicy and rich, the candle wax had melted to a perfect consistency. Carefully, Aeroga mixed the two, and more carefully still, she poured the candle wax into a clean mason jar. Then, before it could cool, she took a wick and held it in place in the jar while the wax hardened. Even though the wick kept blackening in her paws, it only took a few minutes to finish. For the first time, Aeroga had made something.

Baby you can bet
A love they couldn't deny
My words say split
But my words they lie
Cause when we kiss
Oooooh
Baby it's Fire
Kisses like fire
Burn me up with fire
I like what you're doing now
Fire
Touching me with fire
Touching me burning me
Fire
