“I am Laurant. I think you know me already. I mean you no harm, I promise. I only want to talk.”

A gathering of this size meant trouble. The Divinities were solitary creatures by design and it did not bode well that this was the second such meet up in the last few months. The creatures stood, arms crossed or feet shifting, most were annoyed but there were a few who were downright angry and those that showed no emotion at all. He was one of those. His face was pale, his golden eyes hidden in shadows. They were in the desert, isolated from the rest of the world, the moon was a half sphere hanging in the dark sky.

“The problem is still present.” Greael spoke up. They were a large Divinity with grey marbled skin and rust brown wings, two small horns curled out from their forehead. “It’s grown worse to be precise. In my region alone deaths have increased a third more than what is normal for me. It’s a sign.”

A few moans could be heard, as well as murmurs of agreement. A slender, blue-grey Divinity stepped forward, his eyes were snake-like and his wings were smooth and leathery.

“Famine, pestilence, brother turning against brother, and creatures of darkness stalking the world… Yesss,“ His forked tongue elongated the last syllable, “In my mountains as well. I hear whispers in the rocks, something is coming, ssssomething.”

“This is ridiculous!” He was fiery, reds and oranges seemed to bleed off his skin and wings burning into the night, his eyes were the color of lava, “This happens. From time to time the darkness gets a little stronger but it always recedes. It’s nothing to be wasting our time on! People get sick and they get murdered. Try being in the city, this isn’t anything new.”

“Not to mention, none of our business!”

“Not our problem!”

“It IS our problem! It’s gotten out of hand. It’s not just going to go away, something is wrong!”

“It is our responsibility; there is no one else who can see the patterns. Why can’t you open your eyes?”

This wasn’t the first time they’d disagreed on something but this was important. The Divinities had never been so divided before. In the end they came to the conclusion that they would meet again in two months to share information again. Maybe by then they would see eye to eye. Except this time it was decided that should one of them find an imbalance they could deal with it. But only if they were certain beyond a shadow of a doubt. Evil happened after all and they needed to remain invisible and let life work how it would.

“I could not intervene in your life or crossed the worlds and saved you, had you fallen along the way.”

Laurant shook his head. He didn’t know how he felt about staying out of the world’s business anymore. Until recently he’d never had someone in it that actually meant anything to him, not in a long time. He'd always followed the rules before, did his job and was good at it. Now he had someone else to think of besides himself. Thankfully Gabriello wasn’t in this world, well, as thankful as he could be. It was getting harsher out there, he too felt as though this was just the start and things would get worse before too long.

There was something going on, maybe they didn’t know what yet, but it was out there. It was out there whether or not they believed in it. He’d seen it for himself in the way the crops failed, diseases had spread to towns, and the number of Harrows he’d seen was growing. It couldn’t all be a coincidence. He would do what was needed. The Divinities concluded their gathering and took flight into the predawn sky. Laurant didn't go far to collect his thoughts, he went to a nearby dune surrounded by cacti and twisting rocks. Taking a seat on the cool sand he grabbed a handful and let the silky grains run through his fingers.

“I will keep you safe.”

When he'd told Gab that if he was in danger he wouldn't save him, it was a lie, he would have. He knew that the artist could see him and had been sketching him. After all he could see his own image in the paintings hanging on the studio walls and easels. The rules had kept him from coming out of hiding and saying anything, plus Divinities were used to a life of solitude anyways. He was actually rather embarrassed that his picture ended up in people’s homes. Even in churches! In truth, he supposed he did break the rules in the end after all. It was no accident that Gab found him.

“How long did you watch me for, anyways?” They sat together under the trees. Hands entwined, legs touching, looking up at the stars. He’s never felt so happy or at peace in his long life.

He was immortal and from another world than the one he loved. Even a window was forbidden between them, much less the friendship and more, that they shared. But he’s going to hold on to it. He'd promised to keep Gab safe from those that would try to hurt or kill him. I owe him that much since it’s my fault Gab’s in danger in the first place, he thought. He could have just taken the device but he hadn’t. Deep down he was happy that Gabriello hadn’t wanted to give it up.

“I’m drawing angels for the chapel. I’ll try to make sure they are all as handsome as you.” He remembered gasping no and blushing and Gabriello’s laugh. He would probably make them all look exactly like him now.

Gab was always thinking, always creating. People would think that being immortal would make watching humanity boring but it doesn’t. There was always something new happening and yet the things that didn’t change were a comfort. He felt like he’d been given fresh air to breathe since he’d met the passionate artist, and god, did he want to breathe in Gab until his last breath.

Dawn was breaking over the horizon, pinks and oranges softening the world. His golden skin caught the light and glinted like sandstone. He spread his wings and stretched; it was morning already. The breeze ruffled his darker orange-gold contour feathers. His flight feathers were a lighter shade of cream, closer to his skin color. He ran a hand down over them, trying to smooth them down. If he left now he should still be able to make it to Gabriello before he was awake. There would be a time soon when he wouldn't be able to visit often, maybe not at all for awhile. Something was brewing, he could feel it in his skin, his gut, he could tell. It wouldn't be long before it boiled over.
