Gameplay

Basic Summary

In Pyromania, there is an Arsonist who is trying to kill all of the Innocents before they gain the ability to capture the Arsonist. Every Sunrise, the Innocents will choose a hideout to stay in through the night, hoping that it will keep them safe until morning. Every Sunset, the Arsonist will choose a hideout to burn down, killing all of the Innocents inside of it and destroying the hideout.

Occasionally, when an Innocent hides in a hideout, they will stumble upon a piece of Evidence that the Arsonist has left behind. When an Innocent manages to collect three pieces of Evidence, they will become Sleuths and gain the ability to guess which hideout the Arsonist is hiding in. If they guess correctly, the Arsonist will be captured and the Sleuth will win the game.

When four hideouts remain, the Arsonist has become so skilled at manipulating fire that they can use it to kill all of the Innocents inside it without damaging the hideout itself, therefore keeping the final four hideouts intact for the rest of the game. Also at this time, the Innocents who have not become Sleuths have become traumatized enough to start building simple traps that attempt to capture the Arsonist, therefore making them Vigilantes. Vigilantes must correctly guess the identity of the Arsonist and the Hideout that they will hide in for that round in order to trap them. If they guess correctly, the Vigilante will win.

If the Arsonist succeeds in killing all of the Innocents without being captured, the Arsonist will win.

NOTE: Pyromania is a game of chance. Even if you discover who the Arsonist is, you must wait until you enter Sleuth Mode or Vigilante Mode before you can trap the Arsonist. No clues will ever be given out about the identity of the Arsonist. All guesses are based purely on luck, unless the Arsonist accidentally slips and gives away their own identity.

Background Story

Fifteen years ago, the Braise Valley Fairgrounds were closed after a thorough inspection deemed most of the carnival attractions to be highly unsafe after years of use. Ever since it was shut down, the silent amusement park remained hidden in the shadows cast down upon by the gigantic Ferris wheel that the carnival was famous for, until now. Recently, random citizens of Braise Valley have received fliers for the abandoned fairgrounds claiming that the carnival is holding a grand reopening. However, there is something suspicious going on. From the outside of the large iron gates that enclose the carnival, nothing seems to be replaced. The Hall of Mirrors stands crooked and half-collapsed with shards of broken mirrors surrounding the debris. The Ferris wheel has faded to a dull grey color and poison ivy has grown throughout it. All of the shops in the food court look abandoned and dilapidated.

Still contemplating whether you should enter the fairground or not, you notice that a crowd of others has formed around you as well, all seeming to face the same conflict. A voice carries from among the crowd, This place looks more dangerous than when it was first closed! If only they knew. If only you all knew.

Some brave souls have begun entering the fairground, wielding flashlights, lanterns, and small blunt weapons for safety. This is no longer the same festive atmosphere that everyone intended it to be; it is now a mystery that has aroused the curiosity of many. Do you dare enter the decaying park?

Roles

Before Pyromania begins, roles will be assigned to all players. For most players, this role will simply be that of an Innocent. This means that your job is to avoid being killed and to look for Evidence. However, one randomized player will receive the role of the Arsonist. The Arsonist will have a much different role, which will be described later. All players will receive an sMail giving them their role once the game begins, so please be sure to enable sMails or add me as a friend if you have it set to friend only. If you have a different, preferred source of communication then please comment me and let me know what it is.

Hideouts

Each “Sunrise” (explained later in the instructions), players will choose one of 20 Hideouts that they wish to hide in for that round. These Hideouts are as follows:

1. The Ticket Stand
2. The Game Booths
3. The Sideshow Tents
4. The Funhouse
5. The Haunted House
6. The Hall of Mirrors
7. The Observation Tower
8. The Ferris Wheel
9. The Carousel
10. The Teacups
11. The Fun Slide
12. The Ghost Train
13. The Bumper Cars
14. The Viking Ship
15. The Tilt-A-Whirl
16. The Rollercoaster
17. The Generator Shed
18. The First Aid Station
19. The Restrooms
20. The Food Court

To signify which Hideout you wish to hide in for the round, you MUST post your choice in the game thread within this forum (sMails, comments, etc. will not be accepted).

Arsonist's Role

The role of the Arsonist is slightly different from that of the Innocents. The Arsonist will also choose a Hideout to hide in, so that they can easily blend in, but they will also have an additional task. After “Sunrise,” during “Sunset,” the Arsonist will sMail me with one of the 20 Hideouts to destroy during the next “Sunrise”, killing all of the players inside. This decision will take place BEFORE the Innocents choose which Hideouts they wish to hide in, so that the Arsonist will have to predict which Hideout they think will be most popular that day. Until there are four Hideouts left, the Arsonist will be unable to hide in the same Hideout that they plan to destroy. If the Arsonist succeeds in eliminating all of the other characters without being trapped, the Arsonist wins.

Sunrise/Sunset

Pyromania is a turn-based game. A new “Sunrise” will be announced at the beginning of a round and all throughout that round, players may choose a Hideout to hide in. At the end of the round, “Sunset” will be announced and the Arsonist’s decision from the Sunset before will take place. All of those within the Arsonist’s chosen Hideout will be killed and thus out of the game and the Hideout will be destroyed. Once a Hideout is destroyed it cannot be used to hide in ever again. Hideouts will continue to be destroyed each Sunset until four Hideouts remain in which case the Arsonist’s decision will only kill the people within the Hideout, and not destroy the Hideout itself. At this point, the Arsonist may choose to hide in the same Hideout that they plan to kill everyone else in, although it is not recommended since this will make it obvious who the Arsonist is.

Sunrise and Sunset will be announced by me each time they begin and the forum group (discussed below) will be pinged notifying everyone. In general, Sunrise will start around 10:00 AM Subeta Time and Sunset will start around 9:00 PM Subeta Time, however, times will vary throughout the game. If Sunrise or Sunset ever needs to be delayed, an announcement will be made.

Sleuth Mode

The Arsonist will accidentally leave behind a piece of Evidence in a random Hideout each Sunrise. All of those who choose this Hideout during Sunrise will receive the Evidence. This Evidence does not actually reveal who the Arsonist is, but it will enable you to enter Sleuth Mode. Sleuth Mode occurs after a player has received three pieces of Evidence. Once in Sleuth Mode, the player is able to set traps to capture the Arsonist. To set a trap, Sleuths will sMail me during Sunset with the Hideout they think the Arsonist will choose to go into during the next Sunrise (please note, you do not have to be in the same Hideout that you set your trap in, although you may choose the same one if you want to). If this prediction is correct, and the Arsonist enters that Hideout, they will become trapped and that Sleuth will win the game. If the guess is incorrect, nothing happens and they continue to make another prediction during the next Sunset. Innocents are identified through sMail when they enter Sleuth Mode, so the Arsonist will never find out who is a Sleuth and who isn’t. If a Sleuth sets a trap in the correct place, but then is killed by the Arsonist during Sunrise, the Arsonist will manage to escape and the Sleuth will be out of the game. Sleuths may never figure out who the Arsonist is, but this does not matter since they only have to guess the correct Hideout that the Arsonist is hiding in and not the actual identity of the Arsonist.

Note, however, that the Arsonist is clever enough not to leave evidence in the same Hideout that they are hiding in. So if you choose to hide in the same Hideout that the Arsonist hides in (whether you realize it or not), you will not be able to receive Evidence. If, when randomized, the Hideout containing Evidence happens to be the same Hideout that the Arsonist has chosen to stay in, the Hideout will be randomized again.

Vigilante Mode

When there are four Hideouts left, the remaining Innocents who have not become Sleuths will enter Vigilante Mode. During this point, they may sMail me each Sunset saying who they think the Arsonist is and where they think the Arsonist plans to hide during Sunrise. If their predictions are correct, they will trap the Arsonist and win the game. If they are incorrect, nothing happens and they may make another guess during the next Sunset. It is important to note that, unlike the Sleuths, Vigilantes must get BOTH the identity and Hideout choice of the Arsonist correct in order to trap them. Vigilantes still have the chance to become Sleuths but Sleuths will never become Vigilantes (since it is a downgrade). Just like with Sleuth Mode, if a Vigilante correctly predicts the Arsonist’s identity and Hideout choice, but then enters a Hideout that is destroyed, the Arsonist will escape and the Vigilante will be out of the game.

Prize

The first Innocent to enter Sleuth Mode or Vigilante Mode and trap the Arsonist will win the prize of 25,000,000 sP. If, by chance, two or more players set their traps in the same place and both trap the Arsonist at the same time, the prize money will be split evenly. On the other hand, if the Arsonist succeeds in eliminating all other players, the Arsonist will win the 25,000,000 sP.

Important Information

Participation

Since the Waiting List is full of Spirits eager to replace inactive players, it is important that players remain active if they wish to remain a contestant in Pyromania. Therefore the following Attendance Policy is in place:

3 days of inactivity without notice: Warning
4 days of inactivity without notice: Automatic Forfeiture
7 days of inactivity with notice: Automatic Forfeiture

As you can see, if you give warning that you will be missing a certain duration of the game, you will be allowed to miss up to 7 days without being replaced. While I understand that things happen and real life is more important than online games, it is not fair for the active players when a person does not participate. Anyone who is eliminated due to inactivity is always welcome to rejoin the Waiting List and participate in future Pyromanias.

When a player does not post the Hideout they wish to hide in during Sunrise, they will be placed in a randomized room. Similarly, when the Arsonist does not sMail me the Hideout they will to burn down, one will be chosen at random.

Forum Groups

There are now two groups dedicated to Pyromania.

#pyromania – This group is the non-specific group that will only be pinged during important stages of Pyromania, such as a new game being announced, starting, etc. Specific game events such as Sunrise and Sunset will not be pinged to this group but instead will be pinged to the following.

#pyroupdate – This group is the game-specific group that will be pinged for each update of the current Pyromania game running, such as Sunrise and Sunset.

It is highly recommended that you join both groups before playing Pyromania, however, it is optional.

Both groups are open to all, including non-players who simply wish to follow the game.

Name Changes

Players of this game will be identified by their usernames. If you change your username, please mention so the next time you post which room you plan to hide in, so that everyone will know who you are. This applies to players on the Waiting List too, so that when I need to notify you I know who to contact.

Posting Rules

1. Obviously, all of the Subeta forum rules apply.

2. Role-playing is absolutely allowed, but by no means required.

3. Please do not edit your Hideout choices once you have posted them. I only check once to see where you have hidden and if you change it once I’ve recorded it, you will still be placed in the Hideout you originally chose. You may not change it once it has been recorded. Similarly, the Arsonist may not change which Hideout they wish to burn down once they have sMailed me.

4. Do not attempt to get around certain rules or find loopholes that give you a significant advantage in the game. It is obvious how the game is meant to be played and common sense should help you determine whether or not something is allowed. If you truly do not know, feel free to contact me and I will let you know. I reserve the right to add rules if necessary and make them retroactive.

Extra Game Components

The Waiting List

In order to ensure that Pyromania continuously has the correct amount of contestants throughout the game, a Waiting List has been established. Those who are on the Waiting List will act as replacements for any player who is still alive but no longer able to play due to inactivity or any other type of forfeiture. Players on the Waiting List are also given priority to participate in future Pyromanias and are eligible to enter the Graveyard Lottery each round.

The Waiting List opens and closes throughout the duration of the game, so if the Waiting List is closed when you first see it, check back later and it may be open. The status of the Waiting List (open or closed) will be shown above it in the first post of the game thread. If it is closed, you will not be able to join the Waiting List, but if it is open, you may post in the game thread stating specifically that you wish to join the Waiting List.

Polls

Often during Sunrise posts, a poll is included that allows you to voice your opinion on something. The poll can serve to help gain feedback that will improve the game, or simply for discussion purposes. Polls may also be suggested at the LINK COMING SOON.

Donations

All donations are greatly appreciated can be made via the Donation Shop. Or, if you have a specific item that you wish to donate, you can send it to me and let me know that it is for donation purposes. Specific items that are donated may not always be used as an exact prize for the Graveyard Lottery, but instead may be sold and used to help buy Graveyard Lottery prizes, or help go towards the main prize.
