Hello! Do not run away! Yes, I can talk! No, do not be scared! You have no bad designs on my garden, I can tell! You can stay here!

Oh yes, I said my garden, I did. I maybe had better explain for all your questions. You sit there, that rock is nice I think. Or I would not know, I never sit there! Ha! But my lady witch does. I will tell you about that now.

My witch made me. The Gourd Witch. I grew from a seed, but she made my seed special, planted it here, added magic. Gourd Witch takes good care of me. And I do my task. I guard. You see all this garden? I guard it. That is why I call it mine, in a way. I am the guardian of the garden, ha! Of course it is really hers.

You are wondering how I protect, what can I do if thieves come? Since I am rooted in one spot. Well, my roots go deep. And Gourd Witch's magic is good magic, and she gives me much. Ha! Otherwise I could not talk to you! She made me able to talk to her. I am faithful, I tell her everything that happens in her garden here. Which is a little bit mine.

Oh, yes! I do some strange things for a plant being. Some I think you would not want to see! It is not good to meddle in a witch's garden! But I am not the scariest thing!

Let's not talk about scary! I do not have many visitors. And of course they are not all nice! The pumpkin imps are company, but not so intelligent, you know? And my witch knows me so well I cannot tell her many new things. But I have a special story I will tell you, my own precious thing and not my witch's.

I am happy as I am made. To be a plant is not as limiting as you would think, and of course I am not an ordinary plant. But I am curious about moving creatures. And I watch the sky. I watch the birds! Some birds are naughty to the precious plants, those ones I have to watch. But they all are very interesting. I like to watch them flying. Do you also like to watch birds? You do not fly either, so flying must also make them interesting for you.

This tree here, near me. Every spring a nest is built. And birds lay eggs there, and then there are babies! I like to watch and listen. I can listen so well I hear the cracking of the shells, and I tell my witch when it happens! Of course she often knows already. But it is so nice to listen and then watch as the little birdies grow up. And then they fly away before it gets too cold, but maybe they come back or maybe a baby comes back, and there is a new nest for me to watch and listen.

So now comes a year when two birds have built their nest and laid their eggs. This makes me happy. But soon after that, our garden gets a most unwelcome visitor! Even for me a dillema is hard to manage! They do not like gourds, so they do not often come, but this one comes, and this one likes birds. There is a panic and uproar! Birds very scared, dilemma bruising plants, even me! My lady witch comes from the house, and I have my defenses - tendrils and poisons I can use. But I am very sorry to say that before we can make a good rescue, birds are dead!

So what happens to birds' nest and the little eggs? That fell! But it fell into a bush near me! I find the nest there, and two eggs are broken. Three eggs are still whole. I put them in the nest and bring it near me, cover it with leaves to keep it warm. But little birdies are needing always to have a warm bird sitting on top. So what can I do? Plant beings like me are not too warm! My thought is this: I am not warm but pumpkin imps are warm. Also often very lazy. No problems to sit around! So I call them, and make them sit. I offer treats of good things I find in the earth. They take turns, and my eggs stay warm.

You want to know now if the birds hatched. Yes, they did! Three little peepers with open mouths, and those mouths make my next problem. How can I feed them? But I have watched and I know what they are fed. They eat worms, and those I can find in the earth. I told you my roots go deep! I find worms for them, and when they need them chewed, I have teeth for that! So that is what I do, and little birds are fed and become not so little.

When my birds grew big, I had a new problem to solve. I like looking after my little birds in their nest. I keep them fed and clean and happy. But birds need to fly. How can I make them fly? Certainly I can not show them how!

I do not have wings, but pumpkin imps do. So I made them fly for my birds. They watched the imps, but they looked back at me. I flapped my leaves for them, waved my stems and tendrils. It was me the birds copied. So I took them and tossed them gently, so gently, and flapped everything I could. So many times I had to catch them as they fell! But finally they learned, and they flew. I was so happy to watch them! But also a little sad as they flew away. I was again happy when they flew back to me! They found their own bugs and worms, and flew very far, but always they came back to me and to their nest and I watched over them when they slept.

One more problem I had to solve. Can you guess? It came fall time, and I know my birds must fly south. How to do this one last thing? For this, I ask my lady witch. And on a morning all cold and bright, she leaves for south on her broomstick, and my birds follow her. I was sad, but also proud. I made them grow up and be birds in the world!

The last thing in my story is this: it is spring, and birds start to come back. Will there be more birds for me this summer! Answer is YES! Because my own birds, all three, fly all the way back to me! They make their nests in my garden, up in trees like good birds, but also they come sit near me sometimes. I am so very happy.

So that is my story! Now, I think, you had better go and see the Gourd Witch like you were coming to do. She will be waiting; she will know you are here. She knows everything, my lady witch.
