Long beams of pale light filtered through the branches of the young ash tree above as Aeralyn carefully tilled the rich soil beneath. This particular plot would later be home to an abundance of colourful primroses, which would thrive in the cool shade and stable temperature. The earthy smell of the damp ground mingled with the light breeze wafting through the surrounding flowerbeds gave her a deep sense of peace and satisfaction while she worked.

Aeralyn walked through the cobblestoned path separating the various plants, watering or pruning wherever needed. The dahlias and freesias were now in full bloom, their vibrant colours matching the beauty of the large butterflies darting over them. She was sure several of them were visiting from her friend Lillabelle's minion menagerie next door. But while passing the camellias, she noticed that one of the shrubs appeared to be less sprightly than its sisters. The leaves were starting to wilt, and the bulbs remained small and stubbornly closed while neighbouring flowers had already started to unfurl. Aeralyn frowned, puzzled - there didn't appear to be any obvious reason for its poor health. She tended to it a little longer than the others, then returned to the cottage for her usual breakfast of newly harvested fruit.

The nature-loving popoko had discovered her life's passion at a very young age, and became involved in gardening - the 'art of growing things,' as she liked to call it - immediately after moving out of the family nest. With the abundance of different flowers and fruits able to be grown seasonally, Aeralyn was able to consistently sell her produce throughout the year at farmers markets or suburban shops. Gardening was more than a mere job, though - helping something grow from a single seed into an object of beauty or nourishment was one of the most rewarding activities she could imagine.

The next day dawned bright and early, and Aeralyn was up and tending to her flowers while the sky was still tinged by pink and orange by the gradual ascent of the sun. The camellia shrub from the previous day had not fared better - if anything, it looked even more wilted beneath the usual coating of morning dew; the small white petals of the unopened buds had started to brown. She paused and looked at the shrub with concern. While dying plants were a fact of life, it was always a little painful to plant a seed destined to never flower. Aeralyn would never admit this to anyone, but it almost hurt on an emotional level to see something she had carefully nurtured never develop to fruition.

"Oh, little plant," she sighed to herself. "What is wrong? Why won't you grow?"

She brooded for a few moments in silence before starting in surprise at a sudden rustling above her head. Aeralyn took a reflexive step backwards, eyes darting upwards to the thick leafs of the oak branches a few yards away. She couldn't imagine what would be stirring at this hour.

A light, musical voice wafted down through the air, reminding her of the melodic notes of a harp.

"You have a great love of nature, young Popoko. Something not often seen in today's world."

A small creature, surrounded by tendrils of crimson-coloured light emerged from the tree's branches. As Aeralyn's eyes adjusted to the brightness, she registered the humanoid form and fluttering wings - it was a fairy. Her diminutive size and the pinkish aura winding around her figure made it difficult to fully discern facial features, but the unmistakeably green eyes and bright red hair were striking against the warmer hues of her leaf-woven dress. Aeralyn also noticed what appeared to be a small, constant whirlwind of petals swirling around her as she fluttered closer with clear, delicate wings.

"I am the zinnia fairy. I visit flowers throughout the land and help them bloom and grow with my magic."

Aeralyn finally found her voice after several seconds of a stunned silence. "A - a flower fairy? I've read all about you! Your growth magic, your balancing powers in nature ... I thought fairies never revealed themselves to normal folk."

"We don't ... usually." The fairy drew nearer to her. "But sometimes, if we are particularly moved by a grower's dedication ..."

She reached into the space in front of her, and appeared to draw an ornately-decorated green vial from the empty air; a usually impossible act no doubt influenced by some kind of enchantment.

"Here, take this," she said, handing it to Aeralyn. "It will help your dying plant. It will bring it life."

Aeralyn took the vial and examined the beautiful surface adorned with leaf and flower carvings. Could she actually feel a subtle warmth emanating from the potion within, or was it just her imagination?

"Thank you very much," Aeralyn said, mystified by the unexpected gift, but she received no reply. Upon glancing upwards, she realised the fairy had disappeared. She turned in a slow circle and scanned the surrounding area, but the surprise visitor was nowhere to be seen.

"Well ... might as well try this out."

She pulled the stopper from the vial, and a fresh, sweet scent immediately overwhelmed her with an almost hypnotising effect. The potion was sky blue with a shimmery golden sheen where it caught the light. After a few moments of gazing at the contents, she knelt down and carefully poured it over the wilting shrub. The liquid was quickly absorbed by the leaves, buds, and soil beneath. After observing the plant closely for several moments with no immediate change, Aeralyn stoppered the vial and resumed her usual chores.

"A flower fairy?" Lillabelle, a lain, seemed somewhat sceptical as she sipped the strawberry juice Aeralyn had prepared for her visit. "Would they really just reveal themselves like that? I've read that they're very reclusive towards other beings."

"Well, not normally," replied Aeralyn, a little disheartened by her friend's less-than-enthusiastic response to her story. "But I wouldn't say it's an impossibility."

"Hmmm." Lillabelle flipped through a few pages of a wine-coloured book lying on the table, examining the many pictures of zinnias accompanied by explanations for different fairy spells. "I believe your account, of course. I'm just wondering whether or not it might have been something else. A shape-sifting imp, for example. They're often prone to causing mischief. I've ... just never known someone to see a zinnia fairy in person." She scanned another page. "And there's no information here about the green vial she gave you."

"It couldn't have been an imp,' Aeralyn said determinedly. 'I just know - I mean, I could feel ... she was a magical being. There's no doubt in my mind."

Lillabelle finished the remaining juice and stood up. "Thanks for the meal," she said. "I have to return to the menagerie. The Glabbit we took in last week has been ill ... she has some sort of infection. I just hope we can cure her soon."

Aeralyn noticed the attempt to conceal her troubled emotions, and felt a surge of sympathy. They were both lovers of nature; Aeralyn having an ardent devotion for growing plants, and her Lillabelle being passionate about caring for minions in need of help. She knew exactly how it felt to have an unwell living thing under one's responsibility.

"I hope she gets better," replied Aeralyn, trying very hard not to think of the alternative. "Thanks for the visit. I'll let you know how the camellias are doing."

Her friend smiled in response, but there was a trace of dubiousness in her eyes.

Aeralyn could only stare in shock at the scene which greeted her the next morning.

The previously dying plant had changed dramatically. The faded leaves were now a deep, shiny green, and the shrub even appeared to have grown several inches. Bright blue flowers dotted the flourishing plant, each petal speckled with tiny golden particles. This particular species usually only bore white camellias - the dramatic transformation was not only surprising but almost unnerving. She felt slightly uneasy. What kind of potion did the fairy give her? She definitely did not expect such a striking change to occur in less than twenty-four hours.

Still, the flowers were very beautiful, and she was relieved the shrub was thriving now. She pruned some of the leaves, and on a whim, decided to bring a few flowers back to her cottage for decoration.

Aeralyn arranged three of the blue blossoms in a vase and placed them on her bedroom windowsill. Her pet lovebirds, Peach and Lilac, flew over to examine the flowers curiously from a safe distance. They glimmered in the sunshine cascading through the open window, casting small golden lights upon everything nearby like a kaleidoscope. The lovebirds chirped animatedly and started flying around the room in wide circles. Aeralyn watched them with amusement before turning to admire the beauty of the flowers for several more moments. She decided to prepare her easel for some well-deserved art; they was just too pretty not to paint.

She was absorbed in the activity for almost an hour before setting down her brush for a break. She managed a few steps towards the doorway before stopping short at the unpredictable sight in front of her.

The wreath hanging on the wall - the old wreath she had crafted out of last autumn's dried flowers, was literally blooming. There was no other word for it. It no longer comprised of the familiar faded shades of red and brown; each flower was glowing with colour and life. They were unmistakeably alive.

Aeralyn shook her head in disbelief, knowing there was only one explanation. The magical influence of the enchanted camellias was so potent it brought new life to every living thing nearby. That also explained Peach and Lilac's spirited behaviour. An idea suddenly came to her.

Lillabelle was deep in thought, despondently reflecting upon the state of her sick Glabbit while feeding a particularly chubby Nabbot. Rose's condition had steadily declined, and none of the usual herbal remedies had any positive effective on her illness. Lillabelle feared it would overcome the glade minion before she could administer the correct cure.

When Aeralyn burst into the menagerie through the white wooden gates, Lillabelle was so started she accidentally dropped the bag of acorns on the ground. Four Nabbots playing nearby immediately bounded towards her.

"No, wait - I already fed - oh, well," she sighed. "What's the rush, Aeralyn? You seem excited about something."

Aeralyn held the vase of shimmering blue camellias towards her, out of breath while she tried to explain what had happened. "Lillabelle, this is what the shrub produced this morning! After less than a day! The flowers have magical properties - they bring life to everything around them." She took a deep breath. "I think they can help the Glabbit. You should try feeding her the petals."

Lillabelle stared blankly at her friend's excited demeanour. "Magic flowers? I don't understand -"

"Glabbits feed on flowers, right? These camellias have been enchanted by the zinnia fairy's potion. Their influence literally brought my autumn wreath back to life, just by being in the same room - you remember, the one I made months ago?"

Lillabelle felt a thread of hope form inside while she absorbed Aeralyn's words. "That's ... amazing. But how do you know this will work on minions? What if it only has a effect on plants?"

Aeralyn grinned as she gestured towards the swift influx of sound and activity among the chattering Nabbots, their velvet brown fur reflecting the flowers' tiny golden lights. "Trust me."
