The rhythmic workings of the garden shears soothed her consciousness into a state of relaxation. Her surroundings faded away, birds chirping, bees buzzing, and even the snipping of thick woody stems blurred into the background. Her focus was solely upon the beautiful flowers before her. So keen to the task at hand, she hardly registered the wind chimes tinkling as a strong breeze whipped by, swaying the flowers she was tending.
Each cutting was chosen for its embodiment of imperfection. The flowers were dahlias, nurtured by her own hands into gigantic, multi-petaled blooms the size of softballs. Their haphazard arrangement made for a breathtaking scene even with their various stages of growth. Some heads displayed a sprinkling of petals just beginning to unfurl, others were withered, their lives coming to a close in the early morning sunlight. The dying blooms were carefully trimmed from their mother plants and placed gently upon a pile of similar cuttings. There was a sort of reverence in her handling of those fated flowers. They had brought her great peace of mind during their lives, and treating them any less than that was akin to sacrilege.
Time condensed down into the metallic sounds of her shears, guided by her hands, delicately extracting the expired blossoms. As the last snip echoed in her ears, a large pile of faded pinks, yellows and reds had accumulated. Some had just a few shriveled petals clinging to the heads. Gathering them into her hands, she walked awkwardly to the green waste receptacle. Pushing the lid open, she tilted her beloved burden into the half-full bin, letting the faded flowers fall upon a mound of decaying lawn clippings. She reluctantly closed the lid, her hand hesitating before turning around and returning to her garden.
There were other flowers to be tended, but her heart felt heavy as she knew next weekend would bring a repeat of this same event. While her flowers brought joy and blissful happiness in their vivid short lived lives, their deaths painted her heart in faded shades of colour.
