Glacier Lain
Jubilee looked out the window of the old castle. The breeze whispered through the gaps in the old stonework, but her shivers weren't from the draft. She was overlooking the courtyard where hundreds of angry townspeople waved their torches and pitchforks, calling for her head.
Her day had started normally. She's woken up, ate breakfast and gone to rehearsals. Closer to showtime, she'd entered the grubby change room of the old theatre, and gotten ready just like every other night. But the show had felt different. More real. And suddenly, the lights had gone out, bathing them in darkness. When she's woken up, she was here. No longer was she just playing the part of the princess, she was the princess.
A princess that was about to be murdered by an angry mob. She sighed. Maybe this was a dream. It was likely a dream. But what if it wasn't? She could feel the heat of the torches from where she stood. At least she knew how the story went. She would escape. And then what?
As she predicted, rescue came. Unfortunately it was an old serving man, not the handsome fellow that saved her in her play. The serving man hustled her through a hidden door in the stone wall and out into the forest.
It still probably wasn't real. She's probably just fallen and banged her head when the lights had gone out. Still... The piracy part of the play had always seemed fun...
Years later, the dream hadn't ended. She didn't know what happened that night at the opera house, but she must have tumbled into a new reality. Jubilee adjusted the feather in her captain's hat. She’d been right, being a pirate was fun.
