Patron of travelers, messenger-god, traveler-god. Mercury is known by these names and more, and known and respected as such across a great span, lord of borders and hindered by none-- in reality a fairly small thing, at least by the standards at which one judges gods by. More than that, it is his domain within which falls time and its governance, as at the essence of such a thing is movement, and change, those things which to him are his essence, and innate beyond even his own divine calling. To travel is to move, to pass the time just the same, in its way.
He seems fairly literally named (when you get down to it,) which is plain to see, the liquid metal of which he is somehow composed constantly oozing from his core. More than that, for his being made of something so changeable he possesses the ability to shapeshift to a grand degree; though he tends to keep to certain forms, it is more of a willful desire to do so than necessity that dictates this.

He honors its associations well. It is widely known that he is the swiftest out of all those with which he keeps company, covering great distances with the utmost alacrity, and blessed by storms, traveling with the crackle of lightning and thundering wing-beats. A blue glow, and sparks, dance around him even when he stands at ease, the announcement of so much electricity running through his metallic self, illuminating what vapor drifts away from him.
His is generally considered a benevolent domain, not necessarily orderly, but one which does its utmost to see those who wander afar to their destinations. Many other things fall within his purview, of course, but his favor toward travelers is well-known. Perhaps it is a consequence of his own wanderings; nonetheless, it is generally not to the detriment of the other matters to which he ought attend, and more considered with a sort of good humor.
In predictable fashion he will at times take to the road as just another traveler, for to miss out on such an experience would not stand, and this offers opportunity to play godly tricks on the populace in the fashion of tales of old-- though, most know better than to do ill upon a traveler lest they attract his retribution anyway, so the "trick" is more often than not simply an unexpected boon.

Little is known of what business he pursues outside of his general "duties", for even while he is kind, and amicable to interact with (remarkably so for something perceived as a god,) he is ultimately distant to all but a few, keeping his affairs closely guarded to all save those. Not that it is considered good manners to speculate on such things, of course.
