(This fits into the 90s anime of Sailor Moon, in reference to the events of the later half of R. Written by Galaxia.)
Neo-King Endymion paused in his pacing around the crystal chamber, staring out at the shining diamond buildings and lush greenery extending for miles around the base of this central tower. His younger self had seen signs of festival and construction particular to this point of time in one of those visions trying to terrify him away from Usagi. Neo-King Endymion was determined not to repeat the cycle, though; the moment would pass without those dire 'warnings'. In fact, he was determined to make sure Chibi-Usa never had that fateful moment of reaching for the Silver Crystal in tears. He wondered why Usagi was sometimes so distant to their daughter's troubles, though, knowing what Chibi-Usa was going through and where that loneliness would lead.
The orrery to the north whirled into the alignment he remembered, and he felt as if existence held its breath. Neo-King Endymion stared at the alcove of the Silver Imperium Crystal's resting place and waited for the moment to pass. He wasn't even sure how he could have sent such images back into the past; he didn't have time travel, after all. However it had happened, whoever had forced his hand, he wouldn't allow it this time.
There was a chill in the air behind him, a feeling he knew all too well that encapsulated the first blaze of existence and the last gasp of reality in a single frisson. He turned to see Sailor Pluto, the Doors of Time-Space fading from view behind her. "Setsuna!" Mamoru blurted, attempting a smile at her. "I'm about to go walk through the rose gardens, care to join me?" He turned as if to leave.
"No." Mamoru paused, one foot still in the air, at the somber woman's flat pronouncement. "You have something to do first." Sailor Pluto raised her staff, the garnet shimmering in sequence with the tower's crystal reflections.
"No. I won't. It was fate that we would end up together, and it would be senseless to torture our previous selves with false prophecies," Mamoru retorted. In response, Pluto...loomed. That was the only word for the force of her presence behind him, even though he had turned away. "You must," she said simply. He did not respond.
"Time would unravel from this point, ripping apart the future and destroying the past," she continued, walking up and placing her hand on his hunched shoulder. "After the nightmares, when you went walking instead of spending days out with Usagi, and you helped that old man with his Go strategy and told him to talk to his son again? The son who with that family support was able to adopt his niece, who is in turn one of our best diplomats; without your actions they would all three be dead or demoralized and all their hard work and the people they helped lost. Remember that little girl who you gave a rose to because her cat had died, who has become one of our best doctors? The little boy who asked to sketch you when you would have otherwise spent the evening with Usagi...he used the yen you gave him to buy his first set of paints, and his art decorates half our city even today. And all those droids defeated and Crystal Points defended just so by Sailor Moon because of where she was instead of with you...none of which would be the way now. It will splinter and shatter reality like flawed glass if you do not send those visions back in time. You must," Pluto repeated more fiercely.
"This is why Usako has been crying at night," Mamoru realized aloud. "You already told her what 'must' happen, didn't you? And not just for this, either, every time she'd want to change something." Pluto was silent now. Mamoru's tears were tinted red by the garnet glow of Pluto's staff, as if he were dripping blood as well as liquid grief, and he understood now why those images from the future had affected him so much even if they would never actually come to pass. Fate would still burn them again and again, no matter how they tried to avoid the pain they already knew was coming. The kiss, Usagi's joy at their wedding turning into Neo-Queen Serenity awash in a killing glare...he hurled the false memory away with all his power, and Pluto's Time Key blazed so sharply that he flinched even though he wasn't facing the black-skirted Guardian.
The surreal half-glow of the gate faded, replaced by bright sunlight and rainbow reflections. Pluto had gone without even a goodbye, so there was no one else present to see Neo-King Endymion fall to his knees and weep.
