Watch your bags and mind your candy,
for cats and foxes think its dandy

"AAAYYYYEEEEEE!" The shriek of the chocolatier could be heard ringing through the shopping district, quickly followed by the crash of the big tray of cooling taffy on the hard tile floor. Emmelie pounced from the counter top and gracefully avoided any of the sticky taffy, hastily making her exit as quickly as she had made her appearance.

She snapped her tail to her body to narrowly avoid the the broom being brandished by one of the kitchen boys, and squeezed under a storage tower to quickly make a break for the open back door. She launched herself into the alley and quickly ascended the fire escape on the other side, safely out of reach of the straw bristles.

Regaining her dignity, she shook her fur back in place and licked a paw to groom her face. A little black shadow pounced up on the metal platform, joining her.

"Well, did you get anything good this time?" Emmelie asked.

The little fox smirked and shook off the small velvet bag from around his neck. "Definitely. Two gummy cats and the best of all..." Using a small paw he rolled out a shiny orange foil ball. "..A chocolate orange! The clerk was so busy trying to figure out the ruckus in the kitchen she didn't even noticed that I nipped this from the front case."

"Superb Licorice! Great practice for tomorrow night, and some excellent additions."

Emme admired the pretty ribbons tied around the cellophane wrappers of the gummy cats. Pushing one paw against the plastic, the satisfying crinkling caused her to emit a soft purr. But they paled in comparison to the mirror shiny orange foil that safely housed the chocolate orange. Her distorted reflection gleamed back at her, and Licorice carefully rolled it back into the small bag he carried.

"Tomorrow night is bound to be our biggest heist yet, can you imagine? All those pretty wrappings, ribbons, and colored candy papers.." The pep in licorice's step increased as he described the inevitable assortment of candies that were going to be handed out tomorrow night for Morostide trick-or-treating.

------------------

"What a cute feli!" "Oh hello little kitty!" "Can I take her home?"Three girls, all dressed as masquerade ball attendees raced up the sidewalk to coo and touch Emme's silky coat. She purred and mewed in a most adorable fashion, playing games with the children as Licorice pawed through their forgotten candy bags left sitting by their feet.

When his haul was sufficient and the prettiest pieces of candy had been picked, Emme gave a final flick of her tail and pounced up on the stone wall beside the sidewalk, giving a farewell mew to the group of girls. Small hands picked up their candy sacks without a second thought and the girls went on their way.

The games continued throughout the night; the moon illuminating the suburbs of Centropolis and reflecting off the sequins and metallic fabrics of the various costumes, the small echos of little voices yelling "Trick or Treat!" on residents doorsteps. Licorice's velvet bag grew heavy, bulging with treats aplenty and topped to the brim with cellophane wrappers and black and orange ribbons.

Emme and Licorice stopped to rest and reward themselves, gently undoing the drawstrings of the velvet pouch. Filled to capacity, the treats spilled out onto the grass. Pumpkin Pastilles, Two Tone candies, and Jelly Beans poured from the sack. Emme's paw reached for a carefully wrapped ghost pop, the pretty orange fabric tied with a green ribbon was topped with a drawn on face and pink rosy dots for cheeks.

She glanced over at Licorice, who was busy gorging his little fox belly on gummies, a ring of sugar crystals on his snout. Tonight, they would eat until their tummies ached, save the prettiest wrapped pieces for their collection, and dream of the rare goodies they could gather during next year's Morostide.
