"How did you find me?"

"..."

"You shouldn't have come here."

The door you entered through slowly dissipates behind you. Now there is only you...

... and Him.

"Tell me mortal, what desire for power brought you to my door? And what foolishness would bring you through it?"

"I have no desire for power," you say as your voice cracks, "Though foolishness I have plenty of."

The entity tilts his head back and cackles, sending a rippling wave of green electricity through the endless void around you. "No desire? I wouldn't believe it. You humans are all the same. Surely you desire something, else why would you have come all this way? Surely you sought me out for a reason, no?"

"Yes for a reason," you pause and draw a deep breath, "but not for power."

"Then what do you seek?"

"To know how you became... like this. What did those scientists do to you?"

"And why would you care to know what I am or why I am?"

"Because those scientists want to destroy my home."

"And you wish to stop them?" He sneers and laughs again, and you can feel the rumble under your feet as a purple mist begins to swell around you. "You lied... You do want power!"

"I want to stop them."

"And you think I can give you the power to do so, correct?" he hisses, his serpentine tongue lashing out at you.

"I don't know. But you must know something. Can't you tell me anything about what those scientists are doing, and why?!"

Baresh's spectral form shifted, and he seemed to waver like a mirage. "I am the Chimera... the birth resulted from trying to harness spiritual power in the physical realm... I am both new and old, having always existed but not as I do now. They took me and they made me into a physical thing - a monster - and when they realized they couldn't bend me to their will they banished me here... an astral prison cell."

"What if I can find a way to break you free?"

The creature snorts and rolls his eyes, "And how exactly do you plan to do that?"

"The same way I got in here... with this!" You pull out a smooth, glowing crystal shard which pulses and glows a faint purple around the edges. "But getting you out won't be as easy as getting me in, so I'll need your cooperation, a little planning, and the right timing. Are you with me?"

"Where did you get that?!" You see a faint glimmer of hope flash across his glowing yellow eyes, though he conceals it just as quickly. "And why should I trust you? You just want to take my power for your own." He lowers his head to a glare. "You humans are all the same! Only concerned with securing your own self interests!"

"I just want to stop evil people from destroying everything I love... can't you understand that? After they tried to control you, changed you, and then imprisoned you here?"

Suddenly you hear a banging noise from behind you. You turn around to see the door reappearing from the dark mist.

"They're coming," he said, "I can't keep them out much longer. Here, take this, and put it on!" He hands you a dark cloak. You put it on, he touches your forehead, and you find yourself in your bed. You scurry to reach for the crystal shard still tucked safely under your pillow and breathe a sigh of relief.
