Broken Hearts

"Would you like a candy heart?"

"I'm sorry?", She looked up wiping her tears.

"It's just you look sad and I know candy hearts always make me feel better.", I reached out an open package of those real chalky candy hearts most people tend to avoid, but I appreciate their authenticity. She reached over hesitantly and took a few putting them in her hands.

"Did you want to talk about it?"

She nodded and moved closer to the edge of the bench to make room for me. Quickly she bore her heart out into me. She screamed and cried, "How could he leave me right before Valentine's day? After everything I did for him. Everything I gave up for him. He was the one, He was supposed to be my husband. Now I just, my heart hurts so much and I don't know how to move on." She sobbed into my arms. I welcomed her affection slowly feeding off her life force. The longer she was around me, the better.

Over the course of the next few hours she became intoxicated with the pheromone I let off. She became more and more comfortable, despite having just met me. I hadn't even showed her my face. In reality the brokenhearted are the easiest, but there is something more satisfying about the taste of sadness. Maybe it's the burden heartbreak puts on a soul, maybe I capture the essence. Whatever it is, it tastes pretty good.

Sometimes I find it hard to control myself. I can smell the blood pumping through their arteries and moving into their veins. I have like this ability where I can see all of the veins. It's like a roots connecting every part of the circulatory system. Magic really. It helps me pick them out. I picked her because it was convenient, on my way home I found her crying on this bench. Now I'm taking her home.

We got mostly down the alley and I couldn't wait anymore. The urge took over and I could feel the skin on my neck raise. As time past I could feel my body changing again. My spine hunched and exploded past my skin revealing fur. As my teeth expanded I went onto all fours and let out a furious howl looking up to the moon. She stood there pressed up against a door completely frozen in time. I could smell her fear, almost taste it.

I brought my snout beside her and took in her fright. She was ready. Finishing with her heart, she passed as sad as she lived. Misery tasted the best, I thought biting in. I'd love to think I wasn't a monster. I am. I know who I am and what I am. I am comfortable with that truth. Are you ready and willing to face your own realities? We are all monsters.

Valentine's day is among the best days of the year for a good meal. The heart break runs high on nights like this.

Reaching the park, I can see an older man crying. I walked up to him and reached out my hand, "Would you like a candy heart?"
