Chibi-Usa was standing in front of a painting of a ornate gold winged cup in the Hall of Treasures when Neo-Queen Serenity found her. The pink-haired girl strained to reach, then ran her fingers over the nameplate for the art piece as Neo-Queen Serenity watched.

"Sacred Cup," Chibi-Usa read aloud, expression turning wistful as she settled back on her feet from having to stand on tip-toe. Neo-Queen Serenity pondered restructuring the palace to better accommodate her daughter's unique age-locked circumstance and promised herself that she wouldn't forget this time. The swish of fabric as Neo-Queen Serenity nodded to herself drew Chibi-Usa's attention, and the little girl's own pink layered skirts sussurated back as Chibi-Usa dropped into an almost perfect curtsy to her mother. Neo-Queen Serenity smiled awkwardly.

"It's fine, Usa, really," she started to say, but the smile turned into a grimace as she saw citizens watching and whispering (mostly supportive from the expressions, but one or two with upturned noses in the princess's direction). Chibi-Usa noticed the queen's pained look first and then glanced around, her own face dropping into a mask-like empty smile as she took in the whispers and tried to stifle her reaction.

Subtle colors began to ripple across the crystal walls of the gallery, muddy greys and blues with the occasional wave of red as the palace reacted to Neo-Queen Serenity's emotions. It was distracting to the human visitors and the place began clearing out as people filed through wooden doors at the end of the hall to the sunny day outside, looking at paper programs or checking their electronics. Chibi-Usa smiled goodbye with perfect poise and no outward emotion and waved to the people leaving , and turned to her mother with the same formal expression when they were alone.

"How can I be of assistance?" The small lady asked. Neo-Queen Serenity sighed aloud and sat down on a bench across from the painting Chibi-Usa had been looking at, gesturing for her daughter to sit beside her.

"I just wanted to see how you were doing. It's all right, everything is all right, I'm not upset at you," the queen said, practically stumbling over the words and then abandoning the attempt to explain as Chibi-Usa's shoulders slumped ever so slightly at the sigh. Probably assuming it's her fault that I'm upset, the queen thought despairingly, and leaned back to look at the art and gather her thoughts. She did reach for Chibi-Usa's hand, though, and after a few minutes the girl slipped her fingers into Neo-Queen Serenity's crumb-streaked grasp.

"Mama?"

"Yes, dear?"

"That was yours? It's real? The cup? What happened to it?"

"I...can't really explain. For a lot of reasons. I'm not even sure where it went. Ami-chan might be able to use her computer or do some math to figure it out-" Chibi-Usa looked down.

"It's not coming back?"

"...No, I'm afraid not. It provided help when it was needed, but..." Neo-Queen Serenity gestured helplessly with her other hand. "Eventually everything moved on and we found new help and new friends. That's how things go, everything changes. For good, I promise."

"I don't change, mama. It's been hundreds of years, do you think I'll ever get to be an adult? I promise I'll be a good one. I'm ready. I promise. I promise!"Chibi-Usa's voice broke and she buried her face in her mother's dress, trying to hold back the tears. The glow of the room dimmed as Neo-Queen Serenity looked up at the picture of the grail and her shoulders firmed, the atmosphere turning chilly and electrical with gathering temporal energy as she positioned to tilt Chibi-Usa's chin up and stare into her eyes.

"I have a question for you, little one. I know what will happen, dear heart, and I am not lying to you when I say that you will have a happy future with friends and family and people that are your own, not just my leftovers. But this, what we have, will get worse before it gets better. All this doesn't need to have happened, the world can be a different place, but I don't know what the new future would be like. I can't swear on it the same way I can promise you a better life eventually if history remains the same, and I couldn't swear that your papa and I would be the same people. But I will change time itself for you, if you want to take the chance." Chibi-Usa's rabbit-red eye widened.

"You'd do that for me?"Neo-Queen Serenity broke the gaze long enough to look back up at the painting of the cup again, though she still kept the gentle touch on her daughter's face.

"I've risked everything for one person before, even without knowing that everything would all turn out all right in the end." The walls flashed with facets of purple and pearly white through the tension of the moment. Chibi-Usa reached up to adjust her's mothers face back to her, flinching a bit as a spark jumped from her mother's blonde hair and gold crown.

"It sounds dangerous. You promise me, Mama? That people will be happy with me eventually if you don't change anything?"Neo-Queen Serenity nodded, tilting her head at Chibi-Usa with an open-lipped wide smile.

"I promise, especially since your father and I love you now. That one's easy!" She wrapped her arms around Chibi-Usa to tickle her, and the tension of the moment dissipated into laughter. The room lightened back to a sunny day, possibilities and other timelines slinking back into dreams and behind closed doors. Chibi-Usa hugged her mother, voice muffled as she answered.

"Then I trust you. I'll believe in the future for you and Papa."

"Good," Neo-Queen Serenity said through her daughter's hair as she kissed Chibi-Usa on the top of her head and then drew her to her feet. "For now maybe you should take a nap before dinner." Chibi-Usa nodded and wiped at her eyes, smiling and running off towards the residential section, and Neo-Queen Serenity took the opportunity to lick a bit of pudding off of her hand transferred from the bag Chibi-Usa would soon find.
