"Here is how it went: two strange creatures came to Earth. One of them died, or fell into a deep sleep, and when it did, it split into many pieces. There was the piece still asleep in the dirt, swiftly becoming bones, and there were many bright pieces that made their way through the air. Red, blue, yellow, and black - I was yellow, or perhaps gold. I was anything I liked. I was a spaceman, a movie star, a prince - anything.
Something struck me one day with much force. I suspect it to have been a train; we oona are like that, losing ourselves when something hits us. I became like a bug, flitting through the air, entirely unsure of who or what I was- and a boy named Polly caught me, and, seeking safety, I flew down his throat.
Do not misunderstand me! I am still myself. I can leave any time I like. But in the meantime, now that the boy has become a man, I am anything I like yet again."
Depending on when you ask, Pim is either alien royalty from Mars, a benevolent angel, or a monster that crawled out of a buried pile of pearly bones - the last one is most likely, considering what the state of the world is these days. Despite (most likely) not really being a Martian, he uses a vocabulary of his own invention, fights with tools of his own devising and cooks recipes that are completely unpalatable to humanity - chicken livers soaked in wine and honey are his favorite.
