“It’s so white! It’s even more white than the snow down below!” the little fox exclaimed. In all his life, he’d never seen anything this bright.

“Do you like it?” she asked gently, raising her tired head just a little. It had been a long time since anyone had gotten this high up the mountain. She could not recall the last time she'd seen such a young face.

The small creature dug its paws into the snow a few times, as if trying to see if every touch was as cold.

“It’s pretty, is it not?”

“Yes, but it’s so cold. Aren't you cold?” The little fox looked up at the grand, white deer. Her antlers were covered in a thick layer of ice, and when she moved, patches of snow fell off her. “Doesn’t it bother you?"

“Bother me? Oh—I have been here for so many years." Her voice was heavier now, and laced with the cold. "I’m afraid it doesn’t take all that long before the cold touch starts to burn. It will bite at you until your bones are brittle from the frost. After a while you just forget what it felt like before.”

So many winters had come and gone. She had lost count centuries ago. Some had lasted longer than others, some had felt even colder than the ones before. Even so, they had never bothered her—not really. But over the years she had grown to become lonely, and she felt sad having to send the young fox home. This was no place for spirited, happy creatures. She shifted her weight and got up slowly, so careful it almost looked as if she was in pain.

“Go on now, child. It's time for you to head back.”
