"Don't be a know-it-all, Leona."
"You're too smart for your own good sometimes."
"A girl like you shouldn't know so many big words."
"You put people off when you talk like that, Lee."
"Your writing is too hard to understand!"

pleonastic (adj) - using more words than are necessary to express an idea

Reading was Leona's respite. Books were her solace.

In kindergarten, she could be found in the corner of the classroom with a pile of books about space, or sea creatures, or talking shapes. Halfway through first grade, she'd read every fantasy series on the shelf. Second grade was spent in the library as much as possible - there were so many more books! By the end of elementary school, there was not a single book in the school Leona hadn't read - even the dusty, forgotten reference books. On the rare occasions she joined her mom behind the doctor's office desk, she whiled away the hours poring over medical forms and anatomy texts. Leona saw most nights through to the wee hours hidden under the covers with a flashlight in hand and a book on her knees.
