A light trickle coupled with the sound of gently pumping water seemed to echo off the walls of an upscale apartment in downtown Centropolis. Light shown through the tall windows, bouncing off the simple-colored walls and hung crystals. One particular crystal was catching the sun's rays and creating little rainbows on the miniature rock fountain carefully placed at the center of the Livingroom. An assortment of brightly-colored pots filled with succulents surrounded the fountain, creating a Zen-like atmosphere.

Two, brightly colored, ocean-eyes reflected the scene of the fountain. They appeared to be watching the little rainbows with an all intensive gaze. Silky lilac and sky colored ears flicked every so often at the sound of the water. Unbeknownst to the pair of watchful eyes and ears, the small body of the Angel Kerubi was also covered in small little light rainbows. With every twist and turn of the hanging crystals, the rainbows seemed to dance playfully over her soft fur and iridescent white wings. A large and very-well-groomed tail flicked excitedly to the left and right.

So magical. This world of dreams.

BEEEEEEEEEEEP. BEEEEEP. "MOVE IT, BUDDY!"

$#&@.

The illusion of another world and the calming atmosphere were brought to a sudden halt as the sounds of the city flowed in from the streets below. No amount of plants, pretty-fountains, or "magic" crystals could disguise the tall ceilings, minimal furnishings, empty hallways, and central city location that was her home.

This was "it" after all. The ideal, the goal, the lifestyle to strive for. A fancy modern apartment only blocks away from the Blue Building and just a short taxi-ride to Subeautique or the Millionaire Center. Shelves adorned with expensive crystal arrangements, cupboards filled with the most high-quality food, and a fridge full of only the freshest fruits and vegetables from the market. Fancy candles and sweet-smelling flower arrangements decorated one of two bathrooms where you could wash your hands in two different sinks or bathe in a tub that could fit 5 people. In her bedroom you would find a Queen-sized bed, 20 or so pillows, a walk-in closet, a lounging chair, her own balcony covered in plants, and still enough floor space for yoga. Truly, there could be no place like home.

"And how pointless it all is," spoke the Kerubi in a monotone voice as she stepped softly into the kitchen, her paws seemed to barely touch the floor as she walked. There was no one there but her, so the words echoed off the walls creating a lonely scene. A full pot of coffee awaited her on the counter, though it's handle appeared to be worn-down. A couple small flaps of her wings brought her to the cupboard where she would take out her favorite cup like she always did. Opposable thumbs to pour coffee? Nonsense, a good set of teeth does the trick. Black and bitter, no cream or sugar.

More city noise could be heard as she sipped her coffee. It was hard to believe such a seemingly peaceful life could echo with the sounds of chaos.

Her two large ears suddenly flicked back. Her acute hearing had picked up the sound of keys jingling before they even met the door.

"Welcome home," spoke the Kerubi in a much brighter tone.

"Hellooooo my darling Hanava! I've missed you! And oh what a good day we had down at the shop. I'll pick you up a new book later, and some plants too if you want! Oh good you made coffee, I could use a cup. Do we need another new pot yet or is the handle still holding up?"

The talkative human that walked through the door appeared to be a walking contradiction. Her tone was bubbly and sweet, she wore a smile ear to ear that showed now signs of fading. Her hair was cut like a pixie and a beautiful golden brown, eyes a gentle blue, and healthy looking bright skin. However, she was dressed head to toe in the most boring gray outfit that didn't quite seem to match. On her wrist and around her neck were brightly colored gemstones, none of which really matched either. Despite the obvious effort to dress "ordinary" this was someone that would stand out in literally any crowd.

"It's still fine, Mel. And I don't need anymore plants." Hanava said plainly.

Mel, who had been bounding gleefully to the kitchen stopped quite suddenly and looked at her little Kerubi with narrowed eyes.

"Is something wrong, dear?"

Ah, there it was. The connection that seemed to bring a little sparkle to her rather simple life. A connection 5 years in the making and unbreakable, for Hanava had longed stopped being just a pet to her dear friend and owner. There was nothing that could be hidden between the two, and they always seemed to know more about the other than themselves.

"I suppose, but I'm not sure what. I was fine earlier. Why do you suppose that is?"

Mel mumbled something that sounded like "because you were born in late June."

"What?"

"Hm. Nothing. Anyways, why don't you tell me when you stopped feeling fine?"

As Mel poured herself a cup of coffee along with a large amount of Irish cream, Hanava explained how she was peacefully watching the fountain and then heard the sounds of traffic.

"Do you...not like the city?"

"I do!" Hanava said confidently, but her eyes slowly looked down and off the side, "or rather I don't dislike it. Sometimes I just don't understand why we live here."

It was hard to dislike the city. For it's size, Centropolis was relatively clean and orderly. People were usually friendly, but somewhat grumpy on busy days during peak traffic. The convenience was impossible to beat, nearly everything you could possibly need was close by. There was plenty to do, and because of its central location most places weren't all that far to travel to. It wasn't far to Delphi for the carnival, or Veta for some hiking. It was an easy place to meet people and make friends as well. And yet...

"I don't always like it either, ya know." Mel looked down awkwardly at the floor, avoiding eye contact due to the serious nature of the conversation. The matter-of-fact retort came from a place of good intention, but as per usual, was delivered with no tact.

Hanava sighed, flapped her wings a couple times and floated gently to Livingroom futon. Her eyes resumed their earlier state of focusing on the fountain. Mel followed shortly after, bringing over her own coffee and Hanava's. She set her Kerubi's favorite cup down next to the fountain.

"I'll never understand how you can drink it black like that. It doesn't even taste good," Mel joked, attempting to lighten the mood.

"You know if you keep drinking that much sugar, you'll be the size of a Tutani." Hanava mumbled quietly, glancing away from the fountain for only a moment to look at the coffee.

"Was that meant to wound me?" Mel retorted playfully.

"And if it was?"

The two looked at each other without moving. Time seemed to stop. Neither seemed to be even breathing, only the sound of the fountain and city traffic could be heard.

Flick.

A single tail flick seemed to unleash a wave of energy. Mel rose to her feet as Hanava jumped over the back of the futon towards the bedroom.

"HAN! Get back here!" Mel shouted.

"Catch me if ya can, Tutani-butt!" Hanava shouted back as she dove under her bed.

Mel dove under the bed but was unable to get fully under it. She reached frantically for Hanava.

"ha HA H- OOF!" Hanava had been giggling just out of reach when a pillow suddenly hit her right in the nose. Mel sprinted from the bedroom back to the living room during Hanava's moment of confusion.

"Ooo you'll pay!" Hanava flapped her wings and followed suit, but her friend wasn't in the living room as she rounded the corner. "Mel?"

"Out here!" Mel called from the balcony.

Hanava landed just shy of the balcony and stepped out slowly into the bright sunshine. Mel's arms were outstretched, eyes closed, facing the setting sun that reflected off every building.

"Mmmm vitamin D."

"You're a dork, you know that?"

"Yup. It is nice though, isn't it?"

Hanava couldn't disagree. Her pawsteps seemed to carry her right to the edge of the balcony. A gentle breeze ruffled her fur, and a sweet scent was coming up from the bakery nearby. She could see Riverside off in the distance, and the sky seemed almost never-ending from their home high above the city streets.

BEEEEEEEEEP.

"That car that keeps honking is pink."

"No way, really?" Mel giggled and quickly looked down in the direction Hanava was looking. "Oh my gosh it is pink! That's so stupid!"

"Haha, yeah..." Hanava smiled, watching the pink car down below cut people off in traffic. The city brought much entertainment.

"So then, let's go camping in Veta this weekend. And if you could come help me out with the shop tomorrow that would be great." Mel said simply, still watching the traffic down below.

Hanava looked up at Mel, her dear friend and owner that always seemed completely oblivious, aloof even. It was like she lived on her own planet, but then, so did Hanava sometimes. Her mind drifted back to the fountain and magical rainbows.

"'kay." Hanava said plainly, and continued to watch the end-of-the-day traffic next to her best friend.
