Inheritance - prince x enemy of the crown
The latter {Farrell} is the son of a powerful duke, who was robbed of his inheritance by his uncle - a favorite of the current king - after his father died. However, many people don't like Farrell's uncle and support for Farrell grows.
The former {Hagan} is the second-born son of a much-loved king and his second wife, who was banished from court at an early age after his elderly father died and his older brother ascended to the throne. As the third-in-line for the throne (after his two nephews, one of whom is recently married) he has lived a relatively obscure life. However, after his mother's brother was lost at sea, he became the proprietor of his uncle's properties, until his nephew came of age. When his nephew was old enough to take over, Hagan asked to buy the property overseas, which had produced nothing but grief, for more than what the uncle had paid. They agreed and he set sail. Many years later he has returned after much success abroad, having craftily navigated the "lawless" waters of the colonies, helping establish something of an independent government. Intelligent, perceptive, and caring, he is well-liked.
Title - low-born noble x well-educated drifter
The former {Finnegan} is the third son of an earl and the former duke's sister. As the third son and sixth child, he has no expectation of inheritance or title, but is expected to help maintain the household. While he is a talented blacksmith, he isn't known to be the blacksmith and is instead considered the blacksmith's apprentice. Since his mentor has been kinder and more caring towards him than his own father, he does the work without pay. He also assists his cousin Farrell with his schemes, enjoying the adventure.
The latter {Zephyr/Ezekiel/Monahan} is "employed" by Farrell, as a cook. He also treats injuries and ailments with natural remedies. No one knows much about him, other than he "acts like a monk"... In reality, he was raised by monks after his mother died, but a lot of his knowledge about cooking and effective remedies comes from his mother, who was a travelling healer and "fortune-teller"... His mother called him Zephyr, a nod to his father - a nobleman who came from the west, the monks called him Ezekiel, and Finnegan dubbed him Monahan.
