Background Story
Contrail was flying an experimental jet plane in a high strato-sphere, low space altitude flight test. The plane was performing wonderfully, and Contrail was unconcerned, until the command center informed him of a small meteor shower they had picked up on long range recon-satellite. Contrail avoided these without incident, however, a military defense satellite was struck by these objects, and was somehow activated and set on offensive-mode... you've got to love outdated floating hunks of laser firing metal.
The satellite picked up Contrail's plane, and classified it as a threat - this was a new experimental plane after all, the satellite's database was over thirty years old, and anything it couldn't recognize and positively identify was an enemy boogie. It armed itself and it's neighboring satellites to set up a security net. This test flight had just become a very real mission to survive. Re-entry into the atmosphere was his first thought, but the deceleration and angle of attack required would leave him as a sitting duck for the satellites, and even if he did somehow manage to avoid them and reenter the atmosphere, the satellites would follow him down and decimate any area around his landing zone. Contrail had to destroy the satellites, before they got him.
However, it seemed that laser firing satellites were just not enough to screw up his day. The meteors which ruined the satellite to begin with had actually just been a minor pre-wave to a much larger shower which began passing through the same zone as Contrail was desperately fighting for his life in. Try as he might, he could not fight off an ever increasing amount of killer satellites being brought online to aid the first damaged one, especially not as the amount of meteors grew around him. It was only a matter of time until he ran out of maneuvering room, and a meteor stuck his plane. Plummeting in a horizontal spin with no engine power, Contrail struggled to regain some control with the remaining surface panels as he descended into a dangerous reentry angle. His altimeter spinning rapidly, the last thing Contrail saw was a sudden darkness in his cockpit, glancing up from his controls just in time to see a large meteor directly over him...

...Four months later he awoke from a coma to find himself in the ICU of a military base, smashed bones still mending, a mass of scars etched across his skin, and a strange set of golden swirls playing across each shoulder. The nurses, surprised to see him conscious again, explained that his uniform had practically been fused into his skin, and though they had been able to remove the rest of its charred melted remains from him eventually, they had assumed that was where the golden 'leaf-like' symbols had come from, his major ranks on his shoulders warped and twisted by whatever strange metallic properties the meteor had had, and etched right into his flesh.
He was thrilled to be alive, even if he knew he'd be spending months in rehabilitation, he didn't care, he just wanted to get started. There was just one problem, the nurses said - he had already been declared dead by the military months ago.
