You're visiting a stranger's ordinary looking home for an everyday task, but it's clear that its residents aren't quite so mundane. As you stand in this house's living room, you notice a large off-white bird by the window, shuffling anxiously atop a wooden bird perch and glancing in your direction. You decide to humor him and move closer so he can see you clearly. He bobs his head in excitement and turns to face you, raising his colorful salmon-colored crest. Pleased with your good manners, he stands tall on his perch and opens his beak wide.
Cockatoos are big talkers, so perhaps you were expecting him to say words and phrases. But he's too excited right now, so his voice comes out as a stream of scratchy, nonsensical babbling. He is obviously interested in you. Why don't you say something back?
As you call to him reassuringly, the bird begins to calm down, flattening his crest into a relaxed position. Finally, as he grows more comfortable with his visitor, his voice grows smoother and takes on a crooning quality. The words are still garbled, but as you listen carefully, you can make out a pattern that grows more and more distinct. "I gotchu. I gotcha bird. I got you!"
Tentatively, you echo back "I gotcha, bird!" and are acknowledged by Gotcha nodding and fluffing up his feathers. He hops off the stand and to the floor, peering up at you quizzically before rushing off to dig in a nearby toybox. He roots through it mercilessly, shoving unwanted toys to the side before he finds what he wants. In a few moments he's engrossed with pushing around a set of colorful plastic cups. You watch him play for a minute, but he's firmly focused on his toys for now. That bird is just like a little kid! With your visit over, you leave with a smile. He's clearly in good hands.
Dedicated to all parrot owners that can keep these complex creatures happy and secure.
