A weary traveler happens upon an alien squirrel sitting under an alien tree, strumming an oddly familiar tune. The alien squirrel peers up from under his wide-brimmed hat and motions the traveler to join him.
The traveler plucks the last piece of fruit from the swaying branches and sits across from the strange little creature. Surreptitiously picking the uncanny melody, the squirrel quietly speaks while the traveler eats.
I can tell that you're wondering why there's a plant like this growing in the middle of nowhere. The colonists like to claim that the tree they've enshrouded within their park is the only one of its kind. As you can see, that's a half truth if there ever was one, if not an all out lie.
His ears twitch.
I suppose there is only one Ikumoradeekanox, but it's just one part of a much greater whole. The others are quite rare and difficult to find, but they do exist. Atebus isn't just another chunk of lifeless rock aimlessly floating through space.
He chitters under his breath. You'll see.
Anyway, there is only one organism with many offshoots all connected to one another via a vast underground network. I'm not sure if that system is made up of roots or stems. I'm not even sure if it's really a plant. While the Ikumoradeekanox bears a different fruit each day, the others I've found seem to grow only one type. Most of them are edible, but only a few are what you terrestrials would deem valuable.
You'd think they'd be easy to spot, blue trees on a vast expanse of lunar gray. The Ikumoradeekanox may wiggle a bit more than a normal tree, but the others seem to be downright motile. You'll never find one in the same place twice. It could be that they're simply expanding and contracting from the main body to more nutrient rich soil. However, a friend of mine suspects that they've finally learned to hide.
Finished with his tale, the popoko stands and straps the tiny guitar across his back. He taps the charm on his collar and a small silver saucer floats down through the branches.
Look, it's been nice chatting, but I've got to go. Sorry if you were expecting a lift, friend. My saucer isn't big enough for the both of us, even if I leave the rest of the fruit behind.
He reaches up, pulls down a short branch, and cuts it off near the base.
Here you go. Call it a parting gift. Those silly Ziaran botanists say that the cuttings won't grow, but that's because they never tried planting them outside of the domes. Just put your ears to the ground and listen. You'll know you've found the right spot when you can hear the tendrils writhing through the soil.
The traveler, alone once again, lies at the trunk of the strange tree and unwillingly drifts off into a fitful sleep.
